Last week:
at West Johnston: Lost 5-0. Although the score was lopsided, the game was not. The Trojans came out to a quick start and dominated the first 10 minutes of the game. After Michelle Roth nearly scored after dribbling between multiple defenders, Garner gave up their first goal in transition the other way. West Johnston finished the half with a 2-0 lead. Garner came out explosive in the second half keeping possession and moving the ball around well, however, it was West Johnston who was able to finish. After playing a more offensive strategy, Garner left gaps open defensively which were exploited by the opposition. Garner finished the game scoreless.
Clayton: Tie 2-2. Garner took control of the first half, but couldn't find the back of the net until Kaity Fulkerson was able to put in a deflection from Amber Eberhard's multiple shots. Gabi Dugal hit the crossbar from 20-yards out, but was still looking for her first goal of the season. Garner was not forced to make a single save in the first half, however Clayton did hit the side post with 30 seconds left in the half. The beginning of the second half belonged to the Comets. Garner struggled to get the ball out of their own half allowing Clayton to slowly gain confidence. As the game progressed, the pace of play got more exciting. Clayton found the equalizer in the second half to send the game into overtime. In the first overtime, Garner scored early. With 3 minutes left in the second overtime, Clayton was able to tie the game for the final score to be 2-2.
at Knightdale: Won 7-2. Garner got revenge on the Knights after last years debacle. Knightdale controlled the game early, but after Eberhard finished from a breakaway, Garner got their rhythm. The score at halftime was 3-1 in Garner's advantage. The final score was 7-2. Eberhard scored four goals, Heather McClung scored one, Fulkerson scored one and Kari Skillman added the final goal. Michelle Roth assisted on three of the goals, Dugal had one assist, and McKenzie Bennett added an assist.
