Trojans bounce back with win over Bengals

WEB CAST.

Garner got a solid outing from Trey Thompson on Wednesday night as they bounced back from their loss the night before with a 4-1 non-conference victory over Fuquay-Varina at Bengal Park.

Fuquay (6-4) jumped on the board in the first inning as DJ Burt singled and stole second and third before coming home on a groundout and after one, the Bengals led by a single tally.

Garner (8-4) answered back in the third inning to knot the score as Carrington Austin doubled home Vince Jefferies to make it 1-1.

The Trojans then took the lead for good in the fourth inning with three runs off Bengal pitching. Taylor Stephens brought home Skyler Strickland with a sacrifice fly and Jefferies followed two batters later with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the wall in right to make it 4-1.

Fuquay had their best chance to get back in the game in the fifth inning against Thompson (W, 1-2) as they loaded the bases with just one out but the Trojan righty got back to back strikeouts to end the inning to preserve the lead.

Thompson pitched the sixth and came out for the seventh, but after a lead off walk, Alec Hulmes (S, 2) came on to get the final three outs for the three run victory for the Trojans.

Garner (4-3) put the go ahead run on base in the last of the eighth as CJ Schmitt doubled with one out followed by an Aquail Sanders single to put runners at the corners but a strikeout and groundout followed as the Trojans failed to bring the tying or go-ahead runs home.

The Trojans were able to tie the game at two in the bottom of the sixth when Jake Faucette roped his second hit of the day over the first baseman's head to score Trever Lee.

Following the 3-2 loss, the Trojans will return to action on Friday night at 7:00 when they welcome the East Wake Warriors to Trojan Park.

Marshburn mows down Comets

WEB CAST.

Garner senior Tyler Marshburn, was in a word - dominate on Tuesday night fanning a career high 12 batters to help lift the Trojans to a 2-0 victory over the home standing Clayton Comets at Pleasant Field.

Clayton (3-2, 1-1) ran an equally dominate Evan Phillips (L, 1-1) to the hill on Tuesday as he struck out 11 Trojan hitters but in the end it was three mistakes that cost the Comet righty.

Garner (4-2, 1-0) scored the first run of the game in the third winning when Aquail Sanders walked to begin the frame as was moved to second base on a Skyler Strickland sacrifice bunt. Sanders moved up to third on a pass ball before he was singled home by Taylor Stephens as the Trojans took a 1-0 lead.

That margin held up until the sixth inning when another Garner senior made an impact on the contest. Alec Hulmes turned on a two ball, two strike pitch from the Comet pitcher and lifted it over the wall in left field for the final 2-0 margin.

Marshburn (W, 2-0) worked a complete game for the men of Troy scattering four hits, walking just one man and striking out 12.

Garner will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 when they welcome Middle Creek to Trojan Park.

**Coach Nelson and his JV squad earned their first conference win of the season as they defeated Clayton 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon. The Trojans will travel to Middle Creek on Wednesday at 4:15.**

Varsity Softball falls to Clayton

Garner and Clayton locked horns on the softball field Tuesday night at Clayton High and once again it was an epic pitchers duel. However, for the second straight meeting, the Comets got the better of the Lady Trojans winning 2-1.

Garner (1-1, 0-1) scored first pushing across a run in the sixth inning when Cheyenne Champion scored on a sacrifice fly by Alyssa D'Arco which made it 1-0 Lady Trojans.

Both pitchers continued to dominate as Garner's Lauren Marbrey scattered five hits on the night, but in her final inning, the Comets pushed across a pair of runs thanks to four consecutive hits as they earned the 2-1.

Coach Barbour and his lady Trojans return to action on Thursday afternoon at 7:00 when they host Cary at Trojan Field.

**Coach Maxwell and her JV Lady Trojans earned a 12-0 victory over Clayton. Garner (2-0, 1-0) will be at home Thursday at 5:00 when they host Cary.**

Trojan comeback falls short

WEB CAST.

Garner scored two runs the bottom of the seventh to pull to within one run of Fuquay-Varina but fell short of completing their comeback as the Bengals topped the men of Troy 8-7 on Saturday afternoon at Trojan Park.

The Trojans (3-2) trailed by three runs (5-2) entering their final at bat but managed to score a pair of runs to cut into the Bengal lead. Carrington Austin doubled with one out and after a walk to Trever Lee, Skyler Strickland laced a two-run single to left center to pull Garner to within a run. Vince Jefferies laid down a bunt single (his third hit of the day) to load the bases with two outs, however the comeback bid would be thwarted as Levin Woodall lined out to second to end the game.

Fuquay-Varina (4-0) opened up a one run game in the sixth with three unearned runs. The big hit of the inning was a two-run, two out single off the bat of Duce Johnson and give the Bengals an 8-4 lead before the Trojans added some runs.

Garner will return to action on Tuesday night at 7:00 when they travel to Pleasant Field to take on the Clayton Comets in the Greater Neuse River Conference opener.

JV Bounces Back

Following their first loss of the season on Wednesday afternoon, Coach Nelson and his JV Trojans bounced back with a 6-5 victory over Fuquay-Varina.

Trojans rally past Caps

WEB CAST.

Garner scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to erase what was a four-run deficit as they remained undefeated with a 7-5 win over the Broughton Capitals on Friday afternoon at Wiley Warren Field.

The Trojans (3-0) trailed by three at 5-2 entering their final at bat and after a pair of singles from Brighton Hudson and Aquail Sanders, Skyler Strickland saw 10 pitches in his at bat before drawing a walk to load the bases with one out. Taylor Stephens followed with a RBI groundout to pull the men of Troy to within two runs with just one out remaining.

Levin Woodall followed at the plate and down to his final strike, Woodall, hit a ball back up the middle that was knocked down by the Broughton second basemen but his throw pulled the first basemen off the bag allowing two-runs to score and knot the game at five. Two batters later, Alec Hulmes drove a ball down the right field line to plate a pair and give the Trojans a 7-5 lead.

Broughton (0-3) came to bat in the last of the seventh facing Hulmes (W, 1-0) with the meat of their order at the plate and the Trojan right hander promptly struck out the side.

With the victory, the Trojans improve to 3-0 for the first time since the 2006 season. Garner will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Athens Drive to face the Jaguars. First pitch is slated for 4:00.

**The JV baseball team also moved to 3-0 with their 5-4 victory over Broughton at Trojan Park. The JV Trojans will be at home on Wednesday at 4:00 when they host Athens Drive**

Hudson pitches Trojans to victory

WEB CAST.

Brighton Hudson (W, 1-0) worked six strong innings, scattering four hits and allowing just one run on Thursday afternoon to help lift Garner to a 9-1 road victory over Middle Creek.

Garner (2-0) got off to a fast start once again scoring a pair of runs in the opening inning off Mustang starter Graham Edwards (L, 0-1). Alec Hulmes doubled to the gap in right center to score Levin Woodall who singled earlier in the inning and Hulmes came home when Hudson reached on an error.

The Trojan lead grew to five runs in the third inning when the sophomore, Hudson, aided his own cause with a two-run single down the line in right followed later in the inning by a Skylar Strickland RBI single (his first varsity hit).

Middle Creek (1-1) pushed across their only run of the game in the fourth when Jimmy Boyd singled in David Salmon to make it 5-1. However, that would be as close as the Mustangs would get as the Trojans scored four runs in the sixth.

The biggest hit of the sixth frame was a two-run sacrifice fly by CJ Schmitt who flew out to deep right which allowed both Woodall and Hulmes to score and cap the scoring for Garner.

Jake Ellington came on to record the final three outs of the game lifting the Trojans to a 9-1 victory.

Garner will once again be on the road tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 when they face the Broughton Capitals at Wiley Warren Field.
