Trojans use balanced effort to stay perfect

WEB CAST.

Garner put four players in double figures as they rallied from a four point deficit after the first quarter to race past Harnett Central 81-56 to remain perfect.

Harnett Central (5-11, 1-8) took a four point, 19-15 lead after the first quarter thanks to four points from Zach Spainhour and Ruben Malone. Garner was able to stick around thanks to four points from Donald Johnson. But, the Trojans missed several shots which allowed Central to take the lead after one.

That lead didn't last long as Garner (16-0, 9-0) began the second quarter a 10-0 scoring spurt to reclaim the lead. During that second period, Johnson scored seven points while Dominique Reed added five points in the stanza. Central just had no answer as Garner used their quickness and several turnovers to take a 40-25 lead to the locker room.

After halftime, Central still had no answer for the Trojans as Garner pounded the ball down low where Reed went to work scoring six points in the third quarter to lead Garner to a 59-40 lead after three.

The fourth quarter saw the Trojans empty the bench as every player on the roster played and in his first apperance of the season, Anthony Tucker scored a career high five points as the Trojans cruised to an 81-56 win. Garner had 20 steals on the evening.

Garner is back in action tomorrow night at 7:30 when they travel to Smithfield-Selma for a match-up with the Spartans.

Reed's jumper keeps Garner perfect

WEB CAST.

Dominique Reed hit a 13-foot jump shot with four seconds left to lift Garner to a 44-42 win over Knightdale on Friday night at Trojan Coliseum.

It was also a historic night for the head coach of the Trojans, Eddie Gray as he picked up career win number 350 in his 22nd season.

Knightdale (10-9, 4-5) managed to keep up with the up tempo style of the Trojans as both team raced out to a 20-20 tie after the first eight minutes. Donald Johnson paced Garner in the opening stanza with three, three pointers. Meanwhile, Deshaun Griffin led Knightdale with eight first quarter points.

Garner (15-0, 8-0) went inside to Cameron Redd in the second quarter as he led the way with six points to give the Trojans a seven point, 33-26 advantage at the break. However, Johnson still led the Trojans in scoring with 10 first half points.

The second quarter began a trend that continued for the rest of the game as both teams slowed the pace of the game way down and as a result the Knights outscored Garner 11-6. Both teams struggled to score in any way including missing several layups.

In the final stanza, Garner continued their offensive struggles as they went 11 minutes of game action without a point which allowed Knightdale to take their first lead of the game at 42-40. That's when the Trojans found some offense. Reed hit a big layup with under 30 seconds left to tie the game at 42.

Then after a great defensive stand by Garner, they came down court and after almost throwing the ball away, Reed found some space and nailed the 13-footer to give Garner a two point lead, and after the Knightdale half court heave was no good, the Trojans survived.

However, the 44 points that Garner scored was a season low for the Trojans eclipsing the previous low of 62.

For some perspective on the milestone for Coach Gray, he picked up his 250th career win on November 17, 2005 over Middle Creek. Win number 300 came on November 18, 2008 also over Middle Creek.

Garner is back in action on Monday night when they return home to take on Harnett Central at 7:30.

Varsity Girls fall to Knightdale

Garner just couldn't complete their comeback as they were down by 14 going to the final stanza, and couldn't get over the hump after cutting the lead down to seven. Knightdale just pulled away as they defeated Garner 48-33.

The Lady Trojans are back in action on Monday when they host Harnett Central at 6:00

Second half rally keeps Garner perfect

WEB CAST.

For the second time this season, Clayton built a big lead over Garner only to see the Trojans storm back to take the lead for good with 5:28 to play en route to a 70-61 win at Jerry Smith Court on Tuesday night.

Clayton (12-4, 5-3) used an quick tempo offense and built a eight point, 22-14 advantage after the first quarter. Comet Freshman, Gary Clark was a game time decision, but came out blazing with six quick points. Clayton used Clark's efforts and a big four point play by Antonio Pickett early in the quarter which led them to the advantage.

Garner (14-0, 7-0) fell even deeper as Clayton built a 14 point lead before the Trojans came storming back. Donald Johnson found his shot and hit a pair of three pointers in the second quarter along with four first half points from Josh McClain, Cameron Redd and Dominique Reed, which pulled Garner to within six at 36-30 going to the half.

Johnson put the team on his back in the second half as he carried the Trojans with 10 of his game high 21 points in the third quarter to bring Garner all the way back to take their first lead with just over five minutes left in the third, and heading to the fourth, Garner was leading by two at 53-51.

Gavin Wilson was strapped with two early fouls and didn't play for a majority of the first half, however, he hit some big shots down the stretch leading Garner with seven fourth quarter points, including a couple of steals and fast break layups. Those shots by the junior, coupled with the guard play of Emanuel McClain helped Garner pull away in the fourth quarter as they defeated Clayton for the fifth consecutive time with a 70-61 victory.

Garner will return home on Friday night when they host the Knightdale Knights at 7:30.

Varsity Girls fall to Clayton

Clayton used the free throw line to their advantage in the first half, take a double-digit lead into the second quarter and the Lady Trojans had no answer for the full court press as Clayton pulled away in the second half to win 49-32.

Long ball propells Garner to huge victory

WEB CAST.

After another 10-day layoff, it took the Garner Trojans half a quarter to find their stride, but when they did, they demolished West Johnston 101-46 at Trojan Coliseum on Friday night.

Garner (13-0, 6-0) really struggled in the first part of the opening quarter - with four minutes to play in the first eight minutes, the Trojans had a 7-0 lead, which forced Wildcat head coach, Kris Bennett to call a timeout.

Following the timeout, Garner hit their stride on both ends of the court as they finished the opening period with 22 points and limiting West Johnston (6-8, 3-4) to just six. It took West six minutes to score their first points of the game.

The second quarter was more of the same for Garner as Gavin Wilson scored eight of his 10 first half points in the second. Donald Johnson also scored 10 points for the Trojans in the opening half, as Garner hit three, three point shots in the first 16 minutes, as the men of Troy took a 43-16 lead to the locker room.

It was a motivated Garner team that came out of the locker room for the second half as they nailed 10 three's in the final 16 minutes to finish with 13 three pointers for the game - the Trojans had six different players hit a three. Larry Richardson and Johnson hit three long balls a piece as they paced to a 72-31 lead after three.

Eddie Gray cleared his bench with five minutes to play in the final quarter with Garner already over 90 points, but the second team had a mission as they continued their torrid pace. After a three by Max Khuns, Garner was just four points away from the century mark, and they hit that mark as Cameron Redd nailed a pair of free throws to give the Trojans a 101-46 win.

Garner is back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Jerry Smith Court to take on the Clayton Comets, tip-off is slated for 7:30.

Scoring:

West:
Justin Carroll 10, Tyruss Colton 9, Earnest Harrington 9, Sean Johnson 7, Jerrell Jackson 3, Darius Williams 2, Christian Brownfield 2, Pablo Guerrero 2, Angelo King

GARNER: Donald Johnson 24, Gavin Wilson 17, Larry Richardson 14, Josh McClain 14, Dominique Reed 6, Cameron Redd 5, Jarie Hicks 5, Daryl Saunders 4, Nicholas Wyrick 4, Cliff Holt 3, Max Khuns 3, Emanuel McClain 2, Deion Dorsey 1.

West Johnston takes down Lady Trojans

Coach Mays and the Lady Trojans were looking for a big win on Friday night to try and climb back into the GNRC race. However, West Johnston had other ideas as they played scrappy defense as they took a seven point lead to the locker room at halftime.

In the final moments, Garner tried to cut into the lead late in the game, but could never get closer than five points as they fall to West 47-37.

The Lady Trojans are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Clayton for a 6:00 tip-off.

Coming off a successful junior season, Brett Bailey, made sure he would be able to continue his baseball dream as he signed his National Letter of Intent with Brunswick Community College on Thursday morning inside the Media Center at Garner Magnet High School.

The Bailey family has a long standing baseball tradition at Garner and Brett is just the latest in the family's baseball linage. His uncle Ruff and father, Donnie both played baseball at Garner for head coach Paul Faulk and his brother Trey played for the Trojans under the direction of Kim Cain and current Garner skipper, Derik Goffena.

Brunswick Head Coach, Robbie Allen, sighted Bailey's work ethic as one of the main reasons why his program made the decision to add Brett to their impressive club which spent much of last season ranked eighth in the nation.

Congratulations Brett!

Thank you Lee and Anna Hudson

Balanced effort keeps Garner perfect

WEB CAST.

Garner placed four players in double figures as they moved to 12-0 on the season with a 83-52 win over the Wilson Fike Golden Demons at Trojan Coliseum.

The Trojans were paced by Donald Johnson with 18 points, Gavin Wilson with 13 points, Josh McClain with 12 and Cameron Redd scored 10.

Even with the great scoring effort, Garner once again got off to a slow start which allowed Fike to take the lead early in the game. But, during a timeout, Trojan head coach, Eddie Gray got after his team which sparked Garner on the offensive end allowing them to take a 29-12 lead after one period.

Fike (1-11) tried to hang around with Antonio Hinnant who hit a pair of three pointers, but it wasn't enough as Dominique Reed and Deion Dorsey led the charge for Garner down low with the blocked shots and rebounds, that propelled the Trojans to a 45-25 halftime lead.

The second half was more of the same as Garner manged to get every player on their roster some time tonight as they cruised to a 83-52 win.

Garner is back in action next week when they return to Greater Neuse River play.

Varsity Girls comeback falls short

Garner defeated Fike already once this season, however the Lady Trojans had their work cut out for themselves tonight as the Golden Demons came to play. Fike took a seven point, 27-20 lead at halftime forcing Garner to try and play catch up.

After three quarters, Garner was still down by seven at 37-30. But to their credit they did not give up and made it a one-point Fike lead with 30 seconds left. Then Garner turned the ball over and the Lady Demons hit a pair of free throws to escape with a 43-40 win.

JV Boys get another win

Coach Bloms and the Trojans were ready to play again on Wednesday night as they moved to 11-2 on the season with a 60-43 win over Fike.

Garner took a lead at halftime and never looked back.

JV Lady Trojans get win

Coach Ellerbee and the Lady Trojans played a tough physical game with Fike and had to battle their way back late in the game as they came away with a 45-42 win over Fike.

Donald Johnson hit a key free throw with 10.9 seconds left to give Garner a five point lead, that they wouldn't relinquish as they came from behind to defeat Southeast Raleigh 62-58 on Friday night.

Garner (11-0, 5-0) found themselves in a dog fight in every sense of the word as Southeast Raleigh (8-4, 3-2) came ready to play on Friday night and opened up a 22-16 lead after the first quarter, as the Bulldogs played a uptempo physical type of basketball game.

Southeast saw their lead grow in the second quarter as midway through the period, they had a 11 point lead over the Trojans, who were playing very out of character and had several turnovers as they struggled with the Bulldogs pressure defense.

However, Garner clawed their way back at the end of the half to cut the lead to four points at 34-30 at the break.

Garner was able to stay in the game thanks to the rebounding of Deion Dorsey who finished the game with 20 rebounds while Dominique Reed had 12 blocked shots to create several fast break chances for the Trojans.

In the third quarter, Garner began a run that would send them into the lead as Johnson scored 10 of his teams first 12 points in the third quarter to give the Trojans a one point advantage halfway through the third. That lead would grow to as many as 11 in the games third stanza before Southeast made a run.

The Bulldogs came storming back thanks to a balanced scoring effort from Tyler Griffs and Donyea Johnson and made it a 49-48 Trojan lead going to the final quarter.

After an uptempo high intensity game through three quarters, the final stanza was very methodical as both teams tried to grind their way to the victory. But, as they have done most of the season Johnson and Gavin Wilson put the team on their back scoring a combined 11 points in the final quarter.

However, Southeast had several chances to tie the game as they trailed by one three for the majority of the game, but, most of their threes went begging. Garner struggled all night from the line shooting just 39 percent for the game, from the line.

With 10.9 seconds left, Johnson went to the line for two shots and the Trojans up by three, after missing the first, he hit the second and Southeast had their shot on the other end blocked by Reed to keep the Trojans perfect.

Garner will return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to East Wake for a 7:30 tip-off.

Varsity Girls fall to Southeast

After a big win over SSS, Garner was feeling good about their chances to upset Southeast Raleigh. However, the Bulldogs who finished second in the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational, made sure there would be no upset on Friday as they defeated Garner 59-18.

Southeast began the game on a 6-0 run and never looked back as they cruised to victory.

The Lady Trojans are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to East Wake for a 6:00 tip.

Dominique Reed scored 16 of his career high 28 points in the first half as the Garner Trojans picked up their 10th win of the season as they blasted Smithfield-Selma 68-37.

Garner (10-0, 4-0) had to battle for the lead early in the contest as the Spartans hung tough thanks to the play of their senior point guard, Doug Hodges. But, the Trojans pounded the ball down low to Reed who chipped in 10 points in the first stanza to lead Garner to a 19-13 lead after one.

Smithfield-Selma (5-7, 1-3) was able to stay in the game during the first half thanks to their outside shooting as they hit four, three=pointers. However, the Trojans wouldn't be denied as Reed continued his play for the Trojans meanwhile, Donald Johnson found his stride scoring nine points in the first half to make it 37-21 Trojans at the break.

The third quarter was a tough one for both teams as neither team scored until the six minute mark of the quarter. During the quarter you saw a pair of teams that haven't played in two weeks as Garner outscored SSS 9-8 in the stanza to take a 46-29 lead into the fourth.

In the final quarter, Garner hit their free throws down the stretch as Reed was a perfect six of six from the line and finished with 28 points. However, in the fourth quarter, Garner as a team was a perfect 10/10 from the line. That helped the Trojans ease to a 68-37 win.
