After playing their first five games on the road, the varsity softball team opened up the home portion of their schedule with a 10-1 win over Athens Drive on Wednesday night at Trojan Field.
Garner (4-2) scored their first three runs in the bottom of the second off Athens (6-2) starter Cullen Farringer (L 4-2). With the bases loaded and two outs for the Lady Trojans it came down to the number nine hitter in the Garner order Shea Barbour and on a one strike count, she lined a ball down the left field line to clear the bases and give the Lady Trojans a 3-0 lead after two.
In the fourth, Garner scored another pair of runs as Lauren Marbery and Halie Warner singled consecutively and after they were bunted over, Mary-Scott Powell came to the plate and sent a pop up to left field that was dropped by Jenny Nance allowing both runs to score and the Lady Trojans led 5-0 after four.
Another pair of runs crossed for Garner in the fifth as Maddy Stewart walked to being the frame and Courtney Weathersbee reached on the second of three Jaguar errors on the night. Two batters later, Marbery grounded out to plate a run and Kelsey Bryan reached on the final Athens error of the evening to plate Weathersbee and give Garner a 7-0 lead after five innings.
While Garner was scoring all these runs, Christina Gower (W 2-2) was pitching another gem for the Lady Trojans. Gower worked six innings allowing just three hits and one earned run while walking just two and she struck out seven.
In the sixth, Garner added three more runs as Alyssa D'Arco singled up the middle to bring home a pair of runs and Marbery singled to score the final run of the game for the Lady Trojans.
Marbery pitched the final inning and struck out the side to preserve the 10-1 win for Garner.
