Trojans Avenge Loss to Southern Durham with Blowout Win

WEB CAST.

Garner showed no signs of a Thanksgiving hangover on Saturday night as they came out of fire and defeated Southern Durham 77-56 at Southern Durham in the first annual Spartan Thanksgiving Classic.

The Trojans jumped out to a 27-20 lead after the first quarter as the Spartans couldn't keep up with the fast paced Trojan offense. The second quarter was more of the same as Garner kept building on their lead and Stephon Drane poured in 16 first half points to lead Garner to a 49-29 halftime lead.

While Garner had played an impressive first half, memories recalled the Spartans 22 point second half comeback over Garner in last season's second round state playoff game. However, there would be no second half comeback as Garner kept the pressure on as they got three third quarter three pointers from junior Donald Johnson as the Trojans built their lead to 61-44 after three.

In the end, Garner's depth was just too much for the Southern Durham team who only had ten players on their roster and Garner got every player some time on the floor as they cruised to a 77-56 win. Garner is now 1-1 on the season and will host Terry Sanford on Tuesday night at 7:30 at Trojan Gym.

Scoring: GARNER: S. Drane 23, D. Johnson 15, M. Koscielny 9, E. McClain 9, D. Dorsey 8,
J. McClain 6, G. Wilson 5, D. Anderson 4. S. Durham: J. Sanders 16, J. Hunter 13, A. Satterwhite 10, P. Jones 7, D. Jordan 6, E. Collins 5, K. Dores 2.

Girls Lose second game of the year

The Varsity Girls preceded the Boys game on Saturday night and the girls hung with the very talented Southern Durham team for the first half, however, in the third quarter, Southern Durham began to pull away as they defeated Garner by 20 points at 60-40.

The Girls will be in action on Tuesday night at 6:00 when they host Terry Sanford.

Season Ends for Varsity Football

WEB CAST.

The 2009 season ended in the same place that it started for the Garner Trojans on Friday night as they lost to Wake Forest-Rolesville 42-8 at Heritage High School. It didn't take the Cougars long to put a gap between the two teams as Trea Jones went 55 yards on third and two and it was 6-0 WFR as the PAT was no good.

On the ensuing kickoff, Garner fumbled the football and WFR recovered at the 12 yard line and three plays later the Cougars were up 14-0 after converting a 2 point try. Garner's offense finally got on the field and marched down the field however, the drive stalled and Garner had to settle for a 32 yard field goal try from Connor Torruella however, the field goal was blocked and Garner was still down 14.

Wake Forest got the ball back and the Trojan defense came up big forcing a Cougar punt from their own end zone. The snap on the punt went over the head of Will Braddy and out of the end zone for a safety and it was 14-2 WFR. The Cougars would score another first half TD and heading to the locker room, Garner was down 21-2.

The third quarter was more of a field position game for both teams as Wake Forest scored only one touchdown in the third period. However, Garner had to rely on junior quarterback, Cyle Nicely, after freshman quarterback, Lemond Johnson, went out to a injury.

Nicely would direct the Garner offense down the field and just when it looked like the Trojan drive would stall near the goal line, Garner got a roughing the passer call to extend the drive and keep it alive inside the WFR 5 yard line. Two plays later, Juwan Moye, capped the drive with the loan Garner touchdown of the night and it was 35-8 in favor of WFR.

On the Cougars next drive the Garner defense held until 4th down when the Cougars on fourth down and four fired a 35 yard touchdown pass and with the extra point, WFR had a 42-8 lead.

Both teams just ran out the clock to end the game and end the Trojans season with at 42-8 loss. Garner finished the 2009 season with a 7-6 record and will look forward to the 2010 season. The Trojans would also like to say thank you to the class of 2009 for all of their hard work and dedication.

***The Trojan Sports Network would like to thank WFR AD Don Murry for allowing the broadcast to take place tonight***

Garner Downs Wakefield to Advance to Round 2

WEBCAST.

Round one of the playoffs began on Friday night at a very soggy Trojan Stadium on Friday night as Garner welcomed Wakefield to town for the third all-time meeting between the two schools.

After playing the field position game early in the games first quarter, Wakefield jumped on the board first as Niklas Sade nailed a 23 yard field goal to give the Wolverines at 3-0 lead.

Garner struck for the first touchdown of the game on their first drive of the second quarter as Demetrius Fairley scored from 29 yards out to give Garner a 7-3, which would be the halftime score.

Wakefield was the first team to find the end zone in the second half as Freshman quarterback, Connor Mitch found Alex Starnes for a touchdown and a 10-7 lead for the Wolverines. It was Wakefield scoring again at the beginning of the fourth quarter as Mitch found Nigel King who tip toed the sideline for the touchdown and a 10 point Wakefield lead at 17-7 with just over 10:43 to go in the game.

But, Garner came right back with some big runs, none bigger than a run on fourth and one. That's when Garner's spectacular sophomore, Juwan Moye, broke tackle after tackle and rumbled 56 yards down to the five yard line where two plays later, quarterback Lemond Johnson found Dwight Darity at the one yard line, Darity then dove into the end zone for the score and cut the Wakefield lead to three at 17-14 with over 8 minutes to play.

Wakefield came right back and it looked like Garner would hold the Wolverines to a three and out, however, a 15 yard roughing the kicker penalty kept the drive alive, but Garner's defense again came up big again and forced a punt.

Garner got the ball back down three with 6:02 to play Garner would move the ball down the field and again it was Juwan Moye who had another big run to keep the drive alive and get down to the three yard line where the super sophomore, Demetrius Fairley punched it in and gave the Trojans a 21-17 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Wakefield fumbled the kick-off and Terrance Fussell picked up the loose ball and rumbled down to the 19 yard line, however, Garner would go three and out and give the ball right back to Wakefield.

The Wolverines would move the ball in the wrong direction and on a third down and 15 Connor Mitch fired a pass down field that was intercepted by Bryan Watkins for his second pick of the night to seal the win for Garner.

Garner is now 8-2 in the first round of the playoffs under Head Coach Nelson Smith and the Trojans lead the all-time series with Wakefield two games to one.

With the win, the Trojans are on to round two of the state playoffs for the second straight year and they will travel to Wake Forest-Rolesville next Friday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be play at Heritage High School next week.

Garner Falls at Harnett Central

Web Cast.

Harnett Central took their opening drive of the game in for a touchdown and never looked back as they downed Garner 34-9 in the regular season finale at Harnett Central's Trojan Stadium on Friday night.

Garner would be unable to mount any offense against the Trojan defense as Harnett Central was up 20-0 at halftime. In the second half, the Garner offense put several drives together but had nothing to show for it until late in the third quarter when Connor Torruella hit a field goal to make it 34-3.

The loan Trojan touchdown came late in the third quarter when Jeremiah Davis rumbled 77 yards, but the PAT was blocked and Harnett Central milked the clock for a 35-9 win.

Garner will now await the release of the NCHSAA Football Playoff Brackets late on Saturday night to see where they will be playing next Friday night.
