Freddie Jackson hit shot with 16 seconds to play in triple overtime to give New Hanover a 94-92 lead they would not relinquish as the Wildcats advance to regional semi-finals for the second year in a row.
Garner (26-1) rallied from six points down with just over one minute left and tied the game at 71 on a Gavin Wilson bucket. New Hanover (22-5) had led by three going to the final period. The Trojans had a shot to win the game at the end of regulation, however the shot went begging and sent the game to overtime.
In the first overtime, Garner took a quick lead at 73-71, the Wildcats tied the game at 73 all with 2:11 left in the first extra period. Cameron Redd and Donald Johnson both hit big free throws to keep the Trojans around. Both teams play great defense and the game was still knotted, this time at 75 and into a second overtime.
The second overtime period was a defensive battle as both teams scored only nine points, four of Garner's points came down low with easy buckets from Deion Dorsey. The big shot of the second overtime came with Garner up by three when Trevon Brown hit a three from the wing to tie the game and send it into a third overtime.
With the game already an instant classic, both teams continued to leave their heart on the floor. Garner took their biggest lead in the overtime when Wilson nailed his sixth three pointer of the night, which is a new career high. However, New Hanover clawed their way back and the Trojans went only three of six from the line in the final overtime period.
The Wildcats then hit a big bucket to take a two point lead, Garner had one last long distance shot from the opposite free throw line, but it was no good as time expired and New Hanover defeated Garner for the second year in a row, 94-92.
A HUGE THANK YOU to all seven Garner basketball seniors for providing such great memories over the past four year: DeAnthony Harris, Emmanuel McClain, Donald Johnson, Cliff Holt, Deion Dorsey, Daryl Saunders and Nicholas Wyrick.
