Donald Johnson and Gavin Wilson scored 23 points apiece as the Garner Trojans blasted the Southeast Raleigh Bulldogs 87-47 on Friday night at Trojan Coliseum to clinch the number one seed, from the Greater Neuse River in the state playoffs.
Southeast Raleigh (13-8, 6-5) managed to hang with the Trojans in the opening eight minutes as Tyler Griffis and Donyea Johnson kept the Bulldogs around, but Johnson scored six points in the first to give the Trojans a 17-14 lead after one.
Garner (18-0, 11-0) dominated the low post tonight as they outscored the Bulldogs 46-18 in the paint as they began to pull away in the second quarter. Cameron Redd scored eight of his 10 points in the second quarter (all of them coming in the paint). Combine the post play of Redd and the outside shooting of Wilson and Johnson and Garner built a 39-27 halftime lead.Very quietly in the third quarter, the lead continued to grow as nothing seemed to go right for the Bulldogs meanwhile, Johnson scored eight of his 23 points in the third quarter to help the Trojans to a 29 point, 66-35 lead after three.
In the final period, Garner continued to pour it on as Wilson took control of the game with nine of his 23 in the last stanza. The Trojans also got great guard play from both Emanuel McClain and his brother Josh McClain who had 11 and eight points, respectively. Deion Dorsey also tied a career high with nine points as Garner defeated the Bulldogs 87-47.
With the win, the Trojans clinch at least a share of the Greater Neuse River Conference, for the third time is as many years. The last time Garner won three consecutive conference championships was the 1996-98 seasons.
Garner will be back in action on Monday when they travel to East Wake at 7:30.
Varsity Girls fall to Bulldogs in second half
The Lady Trojans managed to play with Southeast Raleigh for the first half as they were down by only 10 points at halftime. However, in the third quarter, Southeast Raleigh came out possessed and dominated inside defeating Garner 64-30.
Garner is back in action on Monday when they travel to East Wake for a 6:00 tip off.
JV Girls fall to Southeast Raleigh
Coach Ellerbee and the JV Lady Trojans held their own against Southeast Raleigh on the road Friday night, but the Bulldogs were just too much as Southeast pulled away in the second half to win 48-26.
Garner is back home on Monday at 6:00 when they take on East Wake.
JV Boys defeat Bulldogs
Coach Bloms as his JV Trojans found a way to win Friday night and sweep the season series with Southeast 56-43. In a hard fought game, it was Demarcus Sanford leading the way for the Trojans with 18 points, six assists and four steals. Sammie Saunders also chipped in with 11 points.
The JV Trojans return home on Monday against East Wake at 7:30.
