Garner falls in triple overtime to New Hanover

WEB CAST.

Freddie Jackson hit shot with 16 seconds to play in triple overtime to give New Hanover a 94-92 lead they would not relinquish as the Wildcats advance to regional semi-finals for the second year in a row.

Garner (26-1) rallied from six points down with just over one minute left and tied the game at 71 on a Gavin Wilson bucket. New Hanover (22-5) had led by three going to the final period. The Trojans had a shot to win the game at the end of regulation, however the shot went begging and sent the game to overtime.

In the first overtime, Garner took a quick lead at 73-71, the Wildcats tied the game at 73 all with 2:11 left in the first extra period. Cameron Redd and Donald Johnson both hit big free throws to keep the Trojans around. Both teams play great defense and the game was still knotted, this time at 75 and into a second overtime.

The second overtime period was a defensive battle as both teams scored only nine points, four of Garner's points came down low with easy buckets from Deion Dorsey. The big shot of the second overtime came with Garner up by three when Trevon Brown hit a three from the wing to tie the game and send it into a third overtime.

With the game already an instant classic, both teams continued to leave their heart on the floor. Garner took their biggest lead in the overtime when Wilson nailed his sixth three pointer of the night, which is a new career high. However, New Hanover clawed their way back and the Trojans went only three of six from the line in the final overtime period.

The Wildcats then hit a big bucket to take a two point lead, Garner had one last long distance shot from the opposite free throw line, but it was no good as time expired and New Hanover defeated Garner for the second year in a row, 94-92.

A HUGE THANK YOU to all seven Garner basketball seniors for providing such great memories over the past four year: DeAnthony Harris, Emmanuel McClain, Donald Johnson, Cliff Holt, Deion Dorsey, Daryl Saunders and Nicholas Wyrick.

Trojans survive Hoke County and advance to third round

WEB CAST.

Survive and advance is the name of the game come playoff time and on Wednesday night at Trojan Coliseum, that's exactly what the Garner Trojans did as they came from nine down to defeat Hoke County 70-69 in overtime.

Hoke County (12-13) came out on fire and used their hot hands to grab a quick five point lead in the opening stanza. However, the Trojans didn't fold as they cut the lead to three at 20-17 after one.

Garner (26-0) continued to struggle to find their shot into the second period, meanwhile the Bucks went inside to Tarique Thompson who dominated the low block with 10 points in the first half. With just under five minutes left in the half, Trojan head coach Eddie Gray called a timeout with his team down by seven. Following the timeout, the men of Troy went on a run to close the half, only down one at 35-34.

The Trojans came out in the second half with a renewed intensity but in the early stages of the third, it didn't show as Garner only scored nine points in the third. Hoke continued to pound the ball inside however, the big men down low for the Trojans limited the production of the Bucks big guys.

Where things really went south for Garner was the outside shooting of Hoke County - after hitting seven three pointer's in the opening half, Hoke hit just three in the second (four coming from one player). Scoring only nine points in the third, Hoke took a 50-43 lead to the final period.

The deficit for the Trojans grew to as many as nine in the opening stages of the fourth quarter, that's when Garner went to work. They switched to some full court pressure while Emmanuel McClain kept Garner in the game scoring seven of his 17 points in the fourth quarter. Cameron Redd and Dominique Reed also came up big, scoring five and nine points, respectively.

Garner turned the game around midway through the period and took a four point lead. The game really turned at the 5:04 mark of the final period when the Trojans called a timeout, trailing 55-49, following that stoppage in play, Garner went on a 10-4 run to knot the score at 59 with 2:23 to play. Hoke County tied the game up late in the fourth and sent the game into overtime, with the score tied at 64.

Playing their second extra session of the season, Garner who had the momentum kept a good thing rolling stopping the Bucks time after time - meanwhile, E. McClain led the Trojans with four points in the overtime. Thompson led the Bucks with three points in the overtime.

Garner held a one point, 70-69 lead with 3.8 left in overtime and Hoke County had the ball, however the half court heave was no good and the Trojans survived.

The Trojans will return home on Friday night when they will host the New Hanover Wildcats at Trojan Coliseum. Tip off is slated for 7:00.

Garner moves on to second round with thumping of EE Smith

WEB CAST.

Gavin Wilson scored a career high 28 points on Monday night to be one of three Trojans scoring in double figures as Garner ran past the EE Smith 87-67 to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

Garner (25-0) began the game by working the ball down low to their big man Dominique Reed who went to work in the paint scoring 8 of the teams 11 first quarter points. Meanwhile, the Trojans played great defense allowing the Golden Bulls to score just four points.

EE Smith (12-13) managed to hang around and eventually took a lead at 32-31 with about two minutes left in the half. Trailing for the first time in the game Garner, exploded - going on a 14-5 run to close the half and take a 45-36 lead into the locker room.

In the second half the Trojans continued to fire at will as Reed scored six points to finish with 14 for the third time in four games. Also, Donald Johnson got red hot scoring six points in the third stanza and finished with 20.

With 3:45 left in the third, Garner coach, Eddie Gray called a time out and challenged his teams defensive effort and following that time out, Garner went on a 8-3 spurt over the next two minutes prompting the Golden Bulls to call a time out with 1:45 left in the third and the Trojans up 62-47. Garner finished the third up 65-49.

In the fourth quarter, Wilson finished up his night of work hitting three, three pointers in the period and tied his career high of five three's for the game. Smith just had no answer for the Trojans quickness as Garner rolled 87-57.

The Trojans will be back in action on Wednesday night when they return home for a 7:00 tip off when they host Hoke County (12-12). The Bucks defeated Laney 65-62 on Monday night.

Garner claims conference tournament for fourth consecutive season

WEB CAST.

For the third time this season, and the 12th consecutive time, Garner defeated Southeast Raleigh 66-56 to claim their fourth straight Greater Neuse River Conference Tournament championship.

Southeast Raleigh (17-9) began the game by finding their hot hand - Sameer Daniels who scored his teams first eight points and finished with 19 of his game high 24 points in the first half, 11 of those points came in the opening quarter. However, Garner managed to steal a 19-17 lead away from the Bulldogs after the first eight minutes of basketball.

Both teams had trouble keeping their hands off each other as 26 combined fouls were called in the first half and the two teams shot a total of 31 free throws in the first half. Southeast did a better job at the line in the first half and managed to grab a 33-32 lead at the break. Keeping the Trojans in the game was Donald Johnson who scored 11 points in the opening half. Gavin Wilson also chipped in 10 points in the first.

Garner (24-0) came out in the second half with a renewed intensity on the boards. After being out rebounded in the first half, Garner turned the table in the third quarter and managed to take lead thanks to six third quarter points from Johnson.

With four second left in the quarter, the Trojans trapped Tristan Walker between the rings but he threw up a prayer from 25-feet away and his prayer was answered as the Bulldogs took a 46-45 lead going to the final period.

With his team trailing by one, Wilson put his team on his back and carried them down the stretch scoring seven of his 19 points in the final eight minutes. However, the Bulldogs didn't go away as they stayed around until the final two minutes.

Garner has struggled at times from the line this year, but when it counted on Friday night, the Trojans were right on from the stripe as Garner's final 12 points came from the line as they pulled away over the final 90 seconds to secure the conference tournament championship for the fourth consecutive season.

The Trojans will now enter the state playoffs which will begin Monday night. Garner will be at HOME on Monday night at 7:00 as they play host to E.E. Smith the number four seed from the Mid-South conference.

Garner dominates Knightdale, again

WEB CAST.

During the first 23 games of the season, the Garner Trojans have won games in many different ways, on Thursday night, they went back to typical Garner basketball, out rebound and run past the opponent. Garner did both very effectively on Thursday as they blasted Knightdale 67-48 to advance to Friday and the championship game of the Greater Neuse River Conference Tournament .

The opening quarter was not exactly thrilling offensively as the two teams combined for 10 points, the Trojans outscoring the Knights 6-4.

However, both teams picked up the pace in the second quarter as Garner (23-0) found their stride and used five second quarter points by Emanuel McClain to take a 22-19 lead at halftime. Knightdale (14-12) got seven points from Jalen Jones in the first half to remain in the game.

As the second half began, it was clear that it was a different Trojan squad. After not scoring a single point in the first half, Dominique Reed found his shot scoring eight of his 14 points in the third quarter, meanwhile, Reed, Cameron Redd and Deion Dorsey went to work on the boards helping Garner take a 13-point, 43-30 lead to the final quarter.

Knightdale tried to make a run in the final quarter and managed to cut into the Garner lead. Then, with 2:48 left in the game, the Knights called a timeout, trailing 55-39. That was a lead the Trojans would not give up as over the final 2:48, Garner outscored the Knights 22-11 as they cruised past Knightdale 67-48.

Garner will be back at home tomorrow night at 7:30 when they host Southeast Raleigh who beat Clayton 67-65 in the other semi-final. The girls championship game between Clayton and Southeast Raleigh will also be held at Garner beginning at 6:00.

Season ends for Lady Trojans

After demolishing East Wake on Monday night, Coach Mays and the lady Trojans returned to the hardwood as they took on the Clayton Comets at Southeast Raleigh High School.

Clayton had already defeated Garner twice, but in the first half, the Lady Trojans hung tough and only trailed by nine, 33-24 at halftime.

However, in the second half, the Lady Comets came roaring back and showed their depth as they defeated Garner 58-44.

Coach Mays and the Lady Trojans complete their 2010-2011 season and they should be proud of the effort that gave this season!

Garner holds off late Harnett Central to advance to semi-finals

WEB CAST.

Garner and Harnett Central met for the second time in five days on Tuesday night at Garner's Trojan Coliseum. After Garner built a big lead, they have to survive a fourth quarter charge by Harnett Central to hold on 78-71 to advance to the semi-finals of the Greater Neuse River Conference Tournament.

Garner (22-0) led by five (17-12) after the opening eight minutes of play, but they saw that lead balloon to 42-27 at the break thanks to the outstanding first half play of Donald Johnson who scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half. Also, Gavin Wilson contributed eight in the opening sixteen minutes while Dominique Reed scored six in the first.

Harnett Central (6-16) used a big first half by standout senior, Brian Taylor, who scored 14 first points in the first half to keep the Trojans in the game. However, Taylor didn't have much help in the score book as the next closest first half scorer for Central was four points from Ruben Malone, which allowed the home standing Trojans to take a 14 point lead to the locker room.

In the second half, Garner used a huge third quarter to take a 23 point lead as Deion Dorsey scored four of his career high 11 points to help lead the charge for Garner. The Trojans made a switch at halftime as they put Emmanuel McClain on Taylor, which limited what he was able to do on offense. Garner led 63-40 going to the final eight minutes.

Leading by double digits, Garner coach Eddie Gray put in his reserves - which allowed Harnett Central to slowly climb back into the contest. Central hit shot after shot to close the lead to single digits with just over two minutes to play. However, Garner hit their free throws down the stretch and held on for the seven point, 78-71 win.

Garner will be back at home on Thursday night in the semi-finals of the Greater Neuse River Conference Tournament as they take on the Knightdale Knights who defeated West Johnston 65-58 on Tuesday. The Garner/Knightdale will tip at 7:30.

Prior to the game, Clayton will face Southeast Raleigh in the other boys semi-final, that will also be at Garner and will begin at 6:00.

Lady Trojans upset Warriors advance to Semi-finals

It has been an up and down season for Coach Mays and the Lady Trojans, but on Monday night, Garner claimed their biggest victory of the season, as they defeated East Wake 53-51 to advance to the semi-finals of the conference tournament.

Garner, who entered as the number seven seed, played at Clayton against the three seed, the East Wake Warriors. The Lady Trojans faced off with the Warriors for the third time in a week. The two meetings last week were back and fourth games, but East Wake pulled away in the final period for a pair of victories.

However, on Monday Garner put everything together in a two-point win. Despite the close final score, the Lady Trojans built a lead that grew to as many as 15 during the game, and held on down the stretch to win 53-51.

With the victory the Lady Trojans keep their dream of making the state playoffs alive (Garner has to win the tournament to qualify).

Garner will return to action on Wednesday night when they will take on the Comets who defeated West Johnston on Monday night 58-44. Garner and Clayton will tip at 6:00 on Wednesday night at Southeast Raleigh High School.

Trojans blast Harnett Central to finish season perfect

WEB CAST.

In the history of Garner High School, no boys basketball team had finished the regular season undefeated - Friday night, history changed as Garner bombarded Harnett Central 87-62 to finish the regular season with a perfect record.

Garner (21-0, 14-0) started fast as Emmanuel McClain hit a three on the opening possession to start the game. However, Harnett Central did not go quietly as they put up a big time fight. Brian Taylor was the spark plug for the Central engine as he scored six of his game high 25 in the first quarter, and after one, Garner had a 21-15 lead.

The game continued to remain tight in the second quarter as Garner played very sloppy while Harnett Central (6-15, 2-12) used big second quarters from Taylor Malcolm Graves. But, midway through the period, Donald Johnson caught fire, the Garner senior scored 11 of his 22 points in the second. Also, Dominique Reed chipped in 11 first half points to give the visiting Trojans a 46-33 lead at the break.

Garner began to show its depth in the second half as both teams got into foul trouble. But, it was a new hero as Gavin Wilson scored just two points in the first half, but in the third quarter he exploded for six points to finish with 13 on the night. That gave the Trojans a 60-42 lead heading to the final eight minutes.

In that final period, Garner had a very balanced effort, but the exclamation point of the win came with about two minutes left in the game when Larry Richardson made a steal at mid-court and jammed with the right hand and drew a foul to put the game away. Garner was able to get everyone the roster some playing time as the defeated Harnett Central 87-62, to cap a perfect season.

Garner will be back in action on Tuesday night at 7:30 when they return home and host Harnett Central in the first round of the Greater Neuse River Conference tournament.

Varsity Girls fall to Harnett Central

The Lady Trojans kept the game close for the entire game, but in the end Harnett Central was too much on Senior night as they defeated Garner 47-38.

Garner put a season high six players in double figures as the Trojans picked up their 19th win of the season with a 91-71 thrashing of East Wake on Monday night.

East Wake (6-14, 3-9) began the game on fire as they used several back door cuts and took advantage of the Trojan defense to build an early five point lead which prompted head coach, Eddie Gray to call a timeout. Following the stoppage in play, Garner cruised to a 20-15 lead after one. Emmanuel McClain paced the Trojans in the opening quarter with 10 points including a pair of three pointers.

In the second stanza, Garner (19-0, 12-0) got a ton of offense from Donald Johnson who after going scoreless in the opening period scored 11 of his 16 points in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Dominique Reed scored eight of his 10 points in the opening half to give the Trojans a 48-30 lead heading into the locker room.

Gavin Wilson came out for the second half as a man on a mission, as he scored his teams first eight points in the second half and really put the game away. East Wake had no answer for the Trojans as they dominated the third quarter as they took a 73-45 lead to the fourth and final quarter.

The final quarter saw a lot of playing time for the non-starters but there was never a let down as the Trojans continued to force the issue as they pulled away for the 91-71 win over the Warriors.

Donald Johnson and Gavin Wilson scored 23 points apiece as the Garner Trojans blasted the Southeast Raleigh Bulldogs 87-47 on Friday night at Trojan Coliseum to clinch the number one seed, from the Greater Neuse River in the state playoffs.

Southeast Raleigh (13-8, 6-5) managed to hang with the Trojans in the opening eight minutes as Tyler Griffis and Donyea Johnson kept the Bulldogs around, but Johnson scored six points in the first to give the Trojans a 17-14 lead after one.

Garner (18-0, 11-0) dominated the low post tonight as they outscored the Bulldogs 46-18 in the paint as they began to pull away in the second quarter. Cameron Redd scored eight of his 10 points in the second quarter (all of them coming in the paint). Combine the post play of Redd and the outside shooting of Wilson and Johnson and Garner built a 39-27 halftime lead.

Smithfield-Selma (6-13, 2-8) managed to make a run in the second quarter as they attempted to climb back in the game with a 13-3 run over the second stanza, but still trailed on the scoreboard. In the second half, Garner emptied the bench as every player saw the floor - for the second night in a row. The Trojans pounded the ball inside to Dominique Reed who scored 13 points and Cameron Redd added nine for the Trojans as they took a 55-40 lead to the final quarter.
