Garner used a seven-run third inning while Will Norris tossed five strong innings as Garner blew past Knightdale 12-4 on Tuesday night at Trojan Park.
Knightdale (9-9, 5-6) appeared to have scored three-runs in the first inning as TJ Viracola homered over the wall in left center, however the Garner coaching staff protested the bat that Viracola used and after consulting the smart phone to find the rule, Viracola was called out and the runners were sent back to their bases. Knightdale didn't score.
With the game still scoreless in the top of the third the Knights finally broke threw against Norris. With one out, Jonathan Smith walked and Allen Grullon walked ahead of back to back base hits to give Knightdale a 2-0 lead. That lead appeared to be growing but the base umpire called interference on a would be double play to turn end the inning and take two more Knightdale runs of the board.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Garner (8-10, 6-4) strung together five consecutive hits including a two-run home run by Alec Hulmes to take a 4-2 lead.
That lead would grow for the Trojans in the bottom of the fourth as they sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored seven runs. Brett Walters had the big hit of the inning launching a bases clearing double to the wall in right center.
After Norris (W, 5-3) completed his work in the fifth, Hulmes pitched the final two innings to preserve the 12-4 victory for the Trojans.
Garner will step outside of conference play tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Middle Creek for a 4:15 first pitch.
