Baseball rallies but falls short at Middle Creek

Middle Creek used a four-run second inning and survived a furious seventh inning rally from Garner as the Mustangs won their eighth consecutive game defeating the Trojans 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon.

Garner (8-11) struck first in the top of the second as Brett Walters doubled to left leading off the inning. After advancing to third on a groundout, Brighton Hudson lined a two hopper to second where it got under the glove of Colin Pelosi allowing Walters to score and give Garner a 1-0 lead.

Middle Creek (11-10) answered right back in the bottom of the inning against Garner starting pitcher, Jake Faucette. After two singles, Ben Brown doubled home David Salmon and Pelosi, two hitters later, Seth Watkins singled home two more and after two innings, the Mustangs had a 4-1 lead.

The score remained the same until the fourth inning when the Mustangs added two more. With the bases loaded and two outs, Watkins singled to left to plate two-more and give Middle Creek a 6-1 lead.

Garner finally chased Watkins from the game following the fifth inning when they scored their second run of the game as Brett Bailey singled with one out and crossed the plate when Brandon Tant collected his 11th RBI of the year on a single to center and after five it was 6-2 Mustangs.

The Trojans had their best scoring chance in the sixth as reliever Landon Blaint loaded the bases. Walters began the inning with his second double of the game. Aquail Sanders was hit by a pitch and Bailey walked which brought up the tying run in the form of CJ Schmitt. After falling behind in the count two strikes, Schmitt worked the count full before striking out looking on a very questionable call to end the Garner threat.

In the bottom of the sixth, Middle Creek added some insurance as Brown homered to left center for a 7-2 Mustang lead.

Garner made a strong run at it in their last bat. Tant, Connor Torruella both singled to begin the inning and Alec Hulmes followed with a three-run home run to make it 7-5. However the Trojans would get no closer as Middle Creek held on for the 7-5 win.

The Trojans are back in action on Friday when they travel to Smithfield-Selma for a 7:00 first pitch.
