Christina Gower struck out a season high 14 batters while the Lady Trojans pounded out 14 his as they shook off the rust of a six day lay off with a 12-3 victory over visiting Wakefield on Monday night at Trojan Field.
Garner (8-2) scored in their opening at bat as Ashley Carroll doubled home Raven Smith for an early 1-0 lead.
Leading by the slim margin, the Lady Trojans added on in the second as Shea Barbour and Alyssa D'Arco began the second with singles and Barbour was brought home with a one out Smith single. Mary-Scott Powell then doubled to left to score two more runs and she came home on a sacrifice fly by Carroll. After the four-run second, it was 5-0 Garner.
Wakefield (3-7) scored their three runs in the third to climb back in the game. Lauren Willey walked to begin the inning and after Christina Damiano struck out, she was able to reach on a pass ball. That occurred again following a Macy Allen wiff, which allowed Willey to score to make it 5-1. The other two runs came home to score when Taylor Sloan doubled to left.
Just when Garner needed an offensive spark, they got it in the last of the fourth when Carroll collected another pair of RBI's on her second double of the game to score Kelsey Bryan and Smith which made it 7-3 Garner.
After adding a single run in the fifth, the Lady Trojans added a final touch of offense, with a four-run bottom of the sixth as Carroll added her fifth and final RBI of the game with a single to score Courtney Barbour.
Fittingly, the game ended with a Gower strikeout to give Garner a 12-3 win.
The Lady Trojans return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to East Wake for a 7:00 first pitch.
JV Softball downs Wakefield
The JV softball team who was playing their first game in over two weeks, the JV softball squad picked up where they left off scoring almost at will as they defeated Wakefield 9-0 on Monday night.
The Lady Trojans travel to East Wake on Wednesday night for a 5:00 first pitch.
