The Trojans score 31 unanswered points to erase a Knightdale 10 point lead and give the Knights their first GNRC loss 31-10. Pat Monahan delivers a knockout blow with a 99 yard interception return for a score to thwart a near certain Knight score. Jeremy Conyers rumbles for 132 yards and two scores and Michael Brantley adds 126 yards for the Trojans, now 2-1 in the conference.
The two teams play a scoreless first quarter despite the Trojans controlling the ball for 8:03 of the period. The Trojans come out in nearly a spread offense look, with BG Howell completing 3 passes for 56 yards on their opening drive. But the drive stalls when fourth and 2 from the Knights 8 fails. The Knights score first on their second possession when a punt hits a Trojan defender at the nine, giving the Knights a very short field. But the Trojan defense stiffens and Knightdale can only muster a 27-yard Evan Pirotta field goal.
The Trojans punt it back to the Knights who take over on their own 34. On third and one, Greg Jackson dashes 56 yards to the goal line and Terrence Davis dives in the final yard for a 10-0 Knightdale lead. The Trojans answer on the ensuing series, with a methodical 65 yard, 8 play drive with Conyers picking up 48 of the yards and scoring from 15 yards out to cut the lead to 10-7 where it remains until halftime. The Knights last drive of the half begins at their own 15 and is stopped on Chaz Damon's sack of QB Ben Bolling for a loss of 12 yards.
The Knights open the second half with the ball first but do not secure a first down, with Michael Ellis and Damon combining to sack Bolling for a loss of 7. The Trojans take the punt at the Knightdale 45. Michael Brantley rumbles for 3 and after an incompletion, Howell scrambles for 5 yards to set up a 4th and two. Before the snap, the Trojans are called for illegal procedure and bring on the punt team. However, the Knights are called for too many players on the field and the Trojan offense comes back out and picks up the first down on Conyers 5 yard trap. Conyers carries for 6 and Howell runs 15 yard down to the Knight 10 yard line. The drive stalls and BG Howell hits a 24 yard field goal to knot the game at 10-10.
The Knights take the kick off at their own 38, where Gorham carries 3 times for 29 yards and Davis adds 16 moving the ball to the Garner 17. On second and 4, Pat Monahan catches the tipped Bolling pass and races 99 yards down the sideline to put Garner up 17-10. After Knightdale goes 3-and-out, the Trojans take over on the Knightdale 32. Brantley dives for one and Conyers 2 but the Knights incur a personal foul call and the Trojans have it first and ten at the 14. But the drive stalls on a Garner holding call, one of six penalties for 50 yards and the Knights takeover on their own 20 as the third quarter ends. Connor McLaurin sacks Bolling for a 3 yard loss. and the Knights ultimately punt back to Garner on their own 46. Conyers dashes for 8, followed by Brantley for 4. Conyers makes a huge 19 run left but a Trojan holding call bring the ball back to the 19. The Trojan pound the ball to the one where Howell dives in for a 24-10 lead. Knightdale's next drive ends on a Terrence Jones fumble recovery on the 24. Garner is called for an unsportsmanlike penalty and take over on the Knightdale 39. Conyers picks up 9 and Brantley the first down on the 27. Conyers covers the final yards, dashing in for his second score of the night from 26 yards out and the final score of 31-10.
