Trojan defense is "spook-tacular" in win over the Warriors

The Trojans spend Halloween in Wendell, making life tough on E.Wake in the 24-12 win. Trojan QB BG Howell is injured and Cody Woodall fills in well, directing the Garner offense to three scores. Howell suffers a hand injury on the Trojans second series, the extent is not known. Michael Brantley rushes for 94 yards and two scores for Garner. The Trojan defense is the star of the night holding the Warriors to just two first downs in each half and allowing just one offensive score.

Garner scores first driving 56 yards to the E.Wake ten but Howell is sacked for an 11-yard loss on second down, which is the play he was injured. After an incompletion, Howell converts a 38 yard field goal for a 3-0 Garner lead. A big Gus Goodson return of the kickoff, starts the Warriors at the own 44. They advance the ball to the Garner 40 but consecutive incompletions, the last caused by pressure from Chaz Damon brings up an unusual field goal "attempt". Richard Gilliespie kicks the ball out of bounds at the Garner eight instead. With Woodall under center, the Trojans move it the 25 with Jeremy Conyers picking up six and Brantley just short of four. Woodall and the offensive line convert fourth and inches with the pile moving to seven yards. But the drive stalls, losing eight yards and forcing a Trojan punt. Ronald Moore subs for the injured Howell and his kick is blocked and Khari Jenkins takes it in for the score. The PAT is blocked to leave the score at 6-3 Warriors.

Ian Hunter picks a fumble on the Warrior kick and dashes to the Garner 30 yard line. After Brantley rumbles 5 yards, Woodall hits Brandon Byars on a slant pattern for 36 yards. Brantley runs it down to the Warrior 17. Conyers moves it to the 14, followed by Brantley's 9 yard gain. The Warriors are tipped by the backfield motion on first and goal, dropping Conyers for a six yard loss. But Woodall hits Brantley from 11 yards out on second and eleven and Howell's kick puts the Trojans back up 10-6. Goodson makes another terrific return to the E.Wake 45, but the Trojans hold them without a first down (again) with Aston Anglin-Stone pressuring Greg Jones on third down to throw it away. Terrell Sanders blocks the Warrior punt and the Trojans take over on the E.Wake 41.

Woodall misses high on his first down throw. Hunter follows with six yards on a reverse and Conyers adds 8 for the first down at the Warrior 27. Conyers stretches for two and Brantley makes a fantastic shoe string catch for four. The Warriors strangely call consecutive timeouts before Woodall hits Josh Brooks from 22 yards for his only catch of the game and the touchdown with 0:56 to go in the half. Thorton Watson prevent Goodson from a big return this time, nailing him at the Warrior 31. The half ends with Damon picking up his second sack of the game, dropping Jones for a five yard loss and a 17-6 Trojan lead. The Trojans enjoy a big 182 to 58 total yardage advantage for the period.

The Warriors start the second half on their own 30 after Garner incurs a face mask call, their first penalty of the game. Goodson dashes 12 yards but Connor McLaurin sacks Jones and then drops Travis Pate for a two yard loss. Goodson fails to convert the third and 14. From their own 11. Garner can't advance beyond the 27 and punt back to E.Wake. Damon's third sack of the night effectively kills the drive but the Trojans fumble when they get it back and the short field allows E.Wake offense their only score, covering the 38 yards in 5 plays with Jones diving in from 2 yards out. The two point attempt fails for a 17-12 score in the third quarter.

Conyers picks up 20 yards on three carries as the quarter ends. McLaurin rumbles 17 yards on his only carry of the night to pick up a key first down. Coyers and Brantley alternate carries for just short of the first down and Conyers gets an awful spot on third and one. The Trojans fumble and the Warriors take over on the 37. Again, the vaunted Trojan defense will have none of any comeback as Damon and McLaurin stop Jones on 4th and inches to get the ball back. The Trojans eat alot of clock but do not produce any points and the Warriors have another shot from their own 31. The Trojans allow just 9 yards and take back over at the Warrior 39 with 2:03 to go. No repeat of Monday night, as Brantley dashes the distance on second down and after a cheap shot by Montrelle Townes well after Brantley scores, tensions heat up but the officials rule offsetting after his Trojan teammates come to Brantley's defense. Howell's kick posts the final score of 24-12. Ronald Moore picks off Jones on fourth and 27 and send the Trojans off to enjoy the remainder of the Halloween evening.
