Soccer Downs Bulldogs

Garner and Southeast Raleigh had to wait over a month to play a game that was scheduled back in the earlier part of the conference season and tonight the two teams met at Southeast Raleigh High School on Thursday night.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half time with a new wrinkle for the Trojans as Matt Wescose was in goal for the Trojans in the first half. Garner got a goal with 17 minutes to play in the second half as Connor Torruella found the back of the net to give Garner a 1-0 lead.

Southeast would tie the game at one and send the game to overtime, that's when Garner made a goal keeper change and put Wescoe back up top. The two teams would play a scoreless first overtime session and the second extra stanza, Wescoe hammered home a goal on a PK with just 7 minutes to play.

Southeast would not be able to recover, as Garner came away with a 2-1 road victory.

Trojans Fall at SSS

Webcast.

Smithfield-Selma took a 14-0 halftime lead on Friday night at Charles T. Tucker Stadium as the Spartans celebrated homecoming against the Trojans.

However, Garner didn't stay down long as the Trojans took the opening kickoff of the second half back near midfield on a great return from Isiah Moore. The Trojans would strike for the first time later in the drive as Sophomore, Juwan Moye rumbled 43 yards for the Garner touchdown and the lead SSS lead was cut in half at 14-7.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Spartans miss played the kick and were backed up deep inside their own end and after the Trojan defense continued their rock solid play on the the drive, the Spartans were punting in the shadow of their own goal posts. On the play, the snap to punter Henry Johnson went over his head and Johnson kicked the ball out of the end zone which resulted in a safety and cur the SSS lead to 14-12.

Late in the fourth quarter the Spartans still had a two point lead, but Garner was driving down the field, inside SSS but a sack on third down, forced Garner to punt. The punt sailed into the end zone, and the Spartans began the drive from their own 20 yard line.

On the first play of the drive, SSS senior running back and Duke commit, Josh Snead took the ball around the right side and went 80 yards for the touchdown as SSS took a 21-12 lead with just over 2:00 to play.

Garner could not mount a comeback as the Spartans defeated Garner, 21-12 and it was the first time SSS defeated Garner for the first time since 1996. The Trojans are now 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in the conference. Next week the Trojans will enjoy a bye week before returning to action on October 16 at home against arch-rival Southeast Raleigh.

JV Trojans Run Over Spartans

The unblemished JV Football team returned to Trojan Stadium on Thursday night as they welcomed the Smithfield-Selma Spartans to town for a old fashion smash mouth football game.

Garner got the ball to start the game and used a solid run game to march down the field using ten plays and almost six minutes of the first quarter clock. The key to the drive was a 22 yard run from Tyler Hinton as he got the ball to the Spartan 16 yard line before capping the drive four plays later with at 12 yard touchdown run and Garner was up 7-0.

Smithfield-Selma then had a crack at the Trojan defense and the Spartans would also put together a 10 play drive before the drive stalled and SSS had to punt. The Spartans punted back to Raevon Smith who got a big block which allowed Smith to scamper 65 yards for the Trojan Touchdown and it was quickly 14-0 Garner.

After the Spartans went three and out on their next drive, Garner used just two plays to score again as Tyler Hinton ran for seven yards on first down to the SSS 44 yard line then Hinton finished the drive taking the ball the final 44 yards to pay dirt. On the extra point try, the snap was high and Garner was able to run the ball into the front left corner of the end zone for the two point try and with 9:42 left in the first half it was 22-0 Garner.

The loan Spartan highlight came on the next drive as Smithfield marched 69 yards in nine plays as on a second and eight, Zacheriah Jones caught a 43 yard pass for the score, the PAT was no good and Garner took a 22-6 lead.

Following a great return on the ensuing kickoff, the Trojans had the football at their own 31. Then, on the first play of the drive, it was Tyler Hinton again as he went 61 yards down to the Spartan 6 yard line and two plays later, Raevon Smith punched it in from a yard out to take a 29-6 lead.

On Garner's first possession of the second half, the Trojans used a long 11 play drive to march down the field for their final score of the night as again, Hinton and Smith carried the load for Garner and it was Smith who scored from five yards out to make it 36-6 Garner.

The 30 point margin would be the final score as neither team would score in the final quarter. During the game, Garner did not pass the ball at all, while Tyler Hinton rushed for 203 yards and Raevon Smith for 81.

The JV Trojans return to action two weeks from Thursday when they travel to Southeast Raleigh for a 7:00 kickoff.

Trojans Fall to Wildcats

Garner hit the road on Monday night as they traveled to Benson to take on the West Johnston WIldcats. After going 1-0-1 last week, the Trojans were hoping to contiune their hot play.

West Johnston took a 1-0 lead in the first part of the opening half, however, Garner would quickly tie the game on a Matt Wescoe free kick from 30 yards out, and the two teams would go to halftime tied at one.

The second half would be a lot of defense, and the game was headed to overtime with the game still tied at one. West Johnston exploded in overtime as they pulled away to defeat Garner 4-1. The Trojans are back in action on Wednesday

Trojans Joust Knights to Cap Homecoming

LIVE WEBCAST

It didn't take long for the Garner offense to get the Trojan Crazies going on Friday night at Trojan Stadium as Garner welcomed Knightdale to town for Homecoming 2009.

Garner got the ball to begin the game and on the first play from scrimmage, Juwan Moye rumbled 68 yards and just five seconds into the first quarter, Garner led 7-0. However, that would be the only scoring of the first half as the two teams played the field position game to end the first stanza of the game.

After Knightdale couldn't move the ball to start the second quarter, Juwan Moye took over again on the fourth play of Garner's first second quarter possession, Moye, ran 53 yards to pay dirt for the 14-0 lead.

On the ensuing possessions, both teams traded turnovers and when the dust had settled, the Knights were facing a fourth down and 12 from deep in their own end as David Hall dropped back to punt, he was barely able to get the punt away, before it was blocked by Garner and recovered by Davonte Atkinson in the end zone for the touchdown and the 21-0 Trojan lead. Knightdale added a late touchdown to go to the locker room trailing Garner 21-7.

At halftime, the homecoming activities concluded as Tre' Perry was named Prince, Cacey Story was named Princess. Matt Powell was named Homecoming King and Homecoming queen was Dasmier Chambers.

Also, the float building results were announced and the Sophomores finished fourth, while the Juniors finished third, the Seniors finished second while the Freshman class can away with the shocker to win first place.

As the two teams came back for the second half, Knightdale took the ball first and drove down the field to score and make it a 21-14 Garner lead. However, the Trojans responded as they marched down the field running a 8 play drive that ended with a Connor Torruella 31 yard Field Goal to make it 24-14 Garner.

Knightdale could do nothing on their ensuing possession and Garner would capitalize as the Trojans again marched the ball down the field and Marques Townsend scored from a yard out and the route was on as Garner led 31-14.

But, the Knights wouldn't die as Aaron Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 31-20. But Garner came right back with another long scoring drive and Juwan Moye scored from two yards out for his third touchdown of the night. Knightdale would add a late score but it wasn't enough as Garner won 38-20.

With the win over Knightdale, the Trojans improve to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in the Greater Neuse River Conference. Also, with the Homecoming win, Garner continues the homecoming winning streak to 26 years.

The Trojans are on the road next Friday when the travel to Smithfield-Selma, kick-off is set for 7:30.

JV Trojan Football Escapes Knightdale with Win

It wasn't pretty for the JV team on Thursday night, however a win is a win, and Garner escaped Knightdale Stadium with a hard fought 14-6 win.

Knightdale had their chances, but several Knightdale turnovers prohibited the Knights offense from kicking into high gear. The big play of the game was when Knightdale had the ball on the Trojan 15 yard line, but turned the ball over and Garner was able to take over.

With the win, the JV Trojans remain perfect on the season at 6-0. Garner returns to Trojan Stadium next Thursday night at 7:00 when they host Smithfield-Selma.

Soccer Ties East Wake

The Varsity Soccer team returned home on Monday night as they took on the East Wake Warriors who came into play as the top team in the Greater Neuse River Conference. The Trojans held their own in the first half as they played to a scoreless tie going to halftime.

However, before the second half could begin a storm came up and as lighting was spotted, the officials halted play for 30 minutes, but the lightning never stopped and after some confusion the game was called and according to the NCHSAA rule book, if a game reaches halftime and can not be finished, it is counted as an official game. Meaning the game ends in a 0-0 tie.

JV Falls to Warriors

The JV Trojans played a scoreless first half and just missed a goal in the waining moments of the first half. In the second period of play, East Wake was able to get a Penalty kick and score and the Warriors also scored later in the half to defeat the JV Trojans 2-0.

Garner Wins Thriller on Final Play to Down Comets

LIVE WEBCAST.

If you like smash mouth football, Thursday night was for you. Garner and Clayton played a typical game as both teams lined up in the I-Formation and pounded the football, but Garner would eventually come out on top in one of the best finishes in High School Football.

After playing a scoreless first quarter, both teams got on the board in the second stanza of the game. However, Clayton stuck first on the Trojan defense as Montrelle Sanders rumbled around the left side for the touchdown the PAT was good and the Comets led 7-0.

But Garner wasted little time getting on the board as Freshman Lemond Johnson went under center for the Trojans and after making a few big runs, he would eventually fake the hand off to the running back and flash 86 yards down the sideline to the the game at 7 which would be the halftime score.

The third quarter was more of the same as both teams defense would not give an inch and going to the fourth quarter, the game was tied at seven. Clayton held the ball for the first six minutes of the games final quarter and would convert three separate first downs before quarterback, Mat Reid went in from one yard out to give Clayton a 13-7 lead. The Comets then brought Eric Winkler on to try the PAT, and coming into the kick, Winkler was a perfect 11 for 11 on extra points but this would be his first miss of the season as the kick sailed wide left and Garner still had life.

Garner began their next drive at the Trojan 30 yard line with 1:47 left in the game. Senior quarterback, Cody Woodall then began moving the ball down the field, but it looked like a repeat of last week with Garner facing a third down and ten from midfield, but Woodall found Juwan Moye who picked up the first down, Garner would nickle and dime the ball down field, but was facing a fourth down and one from the Comet 7 yard line with just two seconds left.

So it all came down to one play as Woodall dropped back to pass he looked over the middle and found Brian Watkins in the middle of the end zone who hauled in the low pass and the Trojans had tied the game at 13 with no time on the clock.

Garner then brought on Connor Torruella with no time on the clock to attempt the kick that would win the game for Garner, after a great snap from Alec Hulmes, Torruella's kick sailed through the uprights and Garner defeated Clayton 14-13 to improve to 1-1 in the Conference and 3-3 overall.

It was also a milestone night for the Garner Football Program as Head Coach Nelson Smith picked up his 100th career win and it was also the 200th win for the Program since 1990.

Garner will return home next Friday night as they welcome the Knightdale Knights to town for Homecoming 2009.

JV Trojans Run Past Comets to Stay Perfect

The JV Trojans returned home on Wednesday night as they welcomed the unbeaten Clayton Comets to Trojan Stadium, and after each team turned the ball over on their opening possession, the Trojans found their stride.

On the second Garner possession of the game, they were facing a 1st down from the Comet 38 yard line, and Tyler Hinton took it to the house for a touchdown and it was 7-0 Garner with 3:55 to play in the opening quarter.

On the ensuing Clayton possession, the Comets were moving the ball down field when Garner caused a fumble which was picked up by Tyree Chance and he returned it 46 yards to the house and after a missed PAT, it was 13-0 Garner.

After another Clayton fumble, Garner put together a seven play drive that spanned 60 yards with the big play being another 8 yard touchdown run from Tyler Hinton and just two minutes into the second quarter it was 20-0 Garner.

Clayton would finally get on the board after putting together a 12 play scoring drive that ended with a one yard touchdown run from Gary Richardson and it was 20-7 Trojans with 4:38 to play in the half.

However, the Trojans would again put points on the board with their second long scoring drive. Garner began the drive from their own 43 and used all three timeouts on the drive the big play of the drive was a when Garner was facing a second down and 12 and Vince Jeffries connected with Anthony Tucker for a 21 yard pass play down to the one yard line to set up the Tyler Hinton's third touchdown run of the night and on the PAT try, Garner converted the 2-pt conversion when Vince Jeffries found Hinton in the front of the end zone and it was 28-7 Garner going to the locker room.

The second half would be more of the same as Clayton couldn't do anything on their first drive of the second half but Garner quickly capitalized with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Vince Jeffries to Anthony Tucker and just 6 minutes into the second half, the Trojans had a 35-7 lead.

Clayton scored back to back touchdowns to make the game close at 35-21, but Garner would answer with another time consuming scoring drive. Carrington Austin found pay dirt from seven yards out to cap the drive and make it 42-21 Trojans.

The Comets added a late touchdown to make the score 42-28 which would be the final as the JV Trojans remain undefeated and will travel to Knightdale next Thursday night at 7:00

Soccer Loses Overtime Contest with Spartans

Coming off a win over Knightdale in their last game, the Varsity soccer team returned to action on Monday night as they traveled to Smithfield-Selma to take on the Spartans.

The first half was low scoring and at the end of the first half of football, Garner was up 1-0. The second half would be back and forth as SSS played behind for most of the second half as Garner took a 3-2 lead with goals by Matt Wescoe, Mat Murra and Kyle Tobin.

Garner would get another goal to go up by two at 4-2 as Wescoe banged home a corner kick. Matt Wescoe added his third goal of the game for a hat trick with 9 minutes left to make it 5-2 Trojans, but that's when the Spartans began on the comeback trail as they scored two very quick goals to make it 5-4 with 8 minutes to play and would later tie the game at five and send the game into overtime.

Garner struck first in the overtime with seven minutes left to take a one goal lead at 6-5 however, the Trojan defense tired and SSS scored on a indirect PK as the ball hit the off a Garner player, then hit the cross bar and off the back of a Trojan and into the net to tie the game.

Following the tough luck goal, SSS score two more goals to defeat Garner 8-6 in overtime. Garner will be back on the road Wednesday when the travel to Southeast Raleigh at 6:30.

Trojans lose Heart Breaker to Wildcats

WEBCAST.

Garner took a 14-3 lead to halftime with out the benefit of a offensive touchdown as the Trojans got a fumble recovery from Brandon Parks that went for a touchdown and after a blocked punt, Isiah Moore scored to make it 14-3 Garner at the half.

In the second half, both teams were plagued by flag after flag, but the big run of the the second half came from Demetrius Fairley who rumbled 90-yards for the touchdown and Garner was up 21-16.

However, West Johnston used a no huddle offense late in the fourth quarter and got a break as Patrick Crocker was being sacked but pitched it to CJ Fredrick just in time as Fredrick reversed fields and eluded several Trojan defenders as he ran 21 yards down to the one yard line to set up the eventual Game Winning Touchdown.

Garner had one final chance and after crossing into Wildcat territory, Garner couldn't advance the ball as Cody Woodall's hail mary pass was incomplete and West Johnston defeated Garner by the 22-21 score for the second consecutive year.

The Trojans will return to action on THURSDAY night when they travel to Clayton for a 7:30 kick-off.

Volleyball Out Duels Bulldogs

The Volleyball teams were back in action on Tuesday night as they hosted arch rival Southeast Raleigh in another key clash of Greater Neuse River Conference foes. Garner came into play Tuesday with a unblemished conference record and would have to work hard to keep their record that way.

The two teams split the first two games of the match with Garner winning game one 26-24 and Southeast winning game two 21-25.

After the Bulldogs won game three of the match, 23-25, the Lady Trojans rebounded to win the final two games 25-23 and 16-14, to take the match 3 games to 2.

Garner remains undefeated in Conference play and is back in action TONIGHT at home as they host East Wake. JV game begins at 4:30 followed by the Varsity at 5:30.

JV Demolishes Bulldogs

The JV team has come on of late as they too have played very well inside the GNRC dropping just one match and Tuesday would go almost perfect for Coach Siemering's club as Garner de-clawed the Bulldogs in just two games.

Garner took game one of the match 25-12 and then capped off their night with at 25-9 win in game two.

Dugal Stays Hot for the Lady Wolfpack

Former Trojan Soccer Star, Paige Dugal ('08) has been on fire for the N.C. State soccer team this season and that trend continued on Sunday. Following a tie with East Carolina earlier in the weekend, the Pack took on Elon 2-0 with Dugal scoring the second goal for the Lady Wolfpack.

Dugal is second on the team in goals, with five, one off the lead. She also has 2 assists to compliment her scoring accomplishments and has 12 points on the year which is also one off the pace for the team lead.

Great job Paige! Keep continuing the Garner Winning Tradition!

Trojans Sink Pirates Ship

LIVE WEBCAST.

Since defeating Garner in 2006 in the Eastern Regional Final, Riverside has not defeated Garner, that trend would continue Friday night as Garner built a big first half lead then held on and stave off a Pirate rally to win the game 35-27.

On the first possession of the game, Riverside fumbled the ball away on their third play from scrimmage, Garner would quickly capitalize on the miscue as Jeremiah Davis went 35 yards into the end zone for the 7-0 Garner lead.

Following a Riverside punt on their next possession, Garner put together a long scoring drive with the big play begin a 41 yard pass play from Cody Woodall to Jeremiah Davis which led to a Cody Woodall passing touchdown to Brian M. Watkins, and the Trojans were up 14-0 to end the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, the Pirates put together a drive which lasted almost 9 minutes but only got a field goal and it was 14-3 Trojans.

Garner would then take over with just 1:52 to play in the half and two timeouts, that's when Woodall and the Trojans went to work. After back to back runs, Woodall connected on a 17 yard pass play to Davis that was followed by a 21 and 19 yards pass completions on consecutive plays for Garner and the drive was capped by a Jeremiah Davis five yard touchdown run to give Garner a 21-3 lead one they would hold until halftime.

The Trojans got the ball to begin the second half and wasted little time getting back on the board as Isiah Moore took the opening kick-off of the second half 89 yards for the Touchdown and it was 28-3 Garner.

Riverside would then begin to put together some drives together which led to a couple of scores as the Pirates would eventually cut the lead to seven points at 28-21 in the middle of the fourth quarter.

However, after Riverside cut the lead to seven, the Trojans marched the ball down the field on five plays and the drive was capped as James Skillern 20 yard touchdown run to give Garner a 35-21 lead which really put the game away.

On the final drive of the game, Riverside marched down the field as Garner was playing a very soft cover defense and the Pirates added a meaningless score for the final of 35-27.

Garner is now 2-2 on the season as they return home next week for the Conference opener against West Johnston, kick-off is slated for 7:30.

JV Trojans Blast Pirates to Improve to 3-0

The JV football team returned home on Thursday night as they hosted the Riverside Pirates at Trojan Stadium. Riverside won the coin flip to start the game, but that would be about the only thing that would go right for the Pirates on Thursday night as Garner bombarded the Pirates 55-0.

Garner's scoring onslaught began on the opening drive as Garner rushed the ball down the field and facing a 2nd and 3 on the Pirate 38, Raevon Smith broke lose and went in for the score and the 7-0 Garner lead, as the first quarter would end with the same 7-0 score.

The Garner barrage really kicked into high gear in the second quarter as on the sixth play of Garner's 3rd drive, Trojan quarterback, Vince Jeffries connected with Damian Ellis in the back left corner of the end zone and with 10:22 left in the first half, Garner led 13-0 as the point after was no good. On the ensuing Riverside possession, Pirate quarterback, Lane Garrett fired a pass down field that was complete, but to the wrong team as Tyree Chance came away with the interception.

Garner would take over with a short field and very slowly and methodically march the ball down field with six straight running plays and on the sixth play of the drive, Tyler Hinton rumbled in from two yards out and Garner would proceed to try for a two point conversion and convert as Jefferies ran it in on the quarterback keeper and Garner had a 21-0 lead.

The Trojans would add one more first half score when Raevon Smith scored from 27 yards out to make it 27-0 at halftime.

Riverside began the second half with the football, but went three and out and the Trojans took over at the Pirate 48 yard line and on the first play of the drive, Tyler Hinton scampered 52 yards for the score and the 34-0 Trojan lead.

On the next Riverside possession, Garrett would be picked again, this time by Joshua Bullock which led to another Garner Touchdown as Hinton scored from eight yards and it was quickly 40-0 Garner.

After a couple of stalled drives by each team, Riverside punted it away to the Trojans, and on the return for Garner, Anthony Tucker fielded the kick and took it down the left side 96 yards for the touchdown to make it 47-0 which would be the scored after three complete quarters.

Garner would add another score midway through the games final stanza as Roy Miles scored on a quarterback keeper and Garner would hold on to win 55-0 over the Pirates improving to 3-0 for the season.

The JV team will be back in action next Thursday at 7:00 when they travel to West Johnston to take on the Wildcats.

Trojans to Fall to Mustangs for the first Time

WEBCAST.

After a big 24-7 win over Broughton a week ago, the Trojans opened the home portion of their home schedule on Friday night as they welcomed, Middle Creek to town for a key intersectional match up.

Garner got the ball to begin the game and had to punt it away as the drive stalled. Middle Creek quickly went down field on their first possession on a 51 yard pass play on the Mustangs first play from scrimmage however, the Trojan defense didn't break forcing Middle Creek to try a field goal try which was no go from just 18 yards out.

The reminder of the first quarter would be a defensive battle, but Middle Creek broke through in the second quarter as Stephen Sladek scored on a 20-yard touchdown run to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead. Middle Creek would score again on their next possession as Garrett Leatham fired in a touchdown pass and at halftime, Middle Creek was up 14-0.

But the Trojan defense came out on fire in the second half as on Middle Creek's first play of the second half, Davonte Atkinson intercepted the pass and put the Garner offense in business with a short field to work with. Cody Woodall and the Trojan offense marched down field and got on the board for the first time as James Skillern scored on a reverse play from just five yards out to cut the lead in half.

On Middle Creek's very next possession, the Mustangs fumbled it away and Garner got it at the Mustang 34, and Garner wasted very little time tying the score as on the third play of the drive, Demetrius Farley scored from 17 yards out to tie the game at 14.

The game would then turn into a defensive battle until Garner took the lead. Cody Woodall connected with Jeremiah Davis on a big 46 yard pass setting the Trojans up inside the Middle Creek 10 and on the next play Bryan M. Watkins found the end zone, however the PAT was no good and Garner had to settle for the 6 point lead.

That missed extra point would prove to be big as on the ensuing kick-off, Devonte King ran it back 79-yards for the score and Matt Frongello added the extra point to give Middle Creek a 21-20 lead.

Garner would have one more chance in the fourth quarter as they put together a long drive, but came up empty when the Trojans tried to kick a field goal, but the 25 yard try was no good and Middle Creek took over and Garner couldn't find any more offense and so in a great defensive effort, Garner fell to Middle Creek 21-20.

The loss to Middle Creek was the first time that the Mustangs had ever beaten the Trojans, Garner is now 1-2 on the season as they head on the road again next week as they travel to Durham Riverside for a 7:00 kick-off from Lenny Wrenn Stadium.

Moye and the Trojans Run Past Caps

LIVE WEB CAST.

On a rainy Friday night, the Trojans hit the road for the second game of the season as they took on the Broughton Capitals. As the two teams got ready to kick off, the rain fell harder and harder and basically turned into a smash mouth grind it out type of game.

Broughton got the ball first and failed to score. Garner then took over in Broughton territory (Garner's first five possessions began in the Broughton end) and marched down the field but had to settle for a Connor Torruella field goal which was no good and the game was still scoreless, until the Trojans next possession when Juwan Moye rumbled 18 yards for the games first touch down to make it 6-0 after the PAT was no good.

After another Capital possession was un-successful, it was the Juwan Moye show again as he bolted 52 yards for the touchdown to make it 12-0 Garner mid way through the first quarter. Garner would attempt the two point conversion was no good and the Trojans would have to settle for the 12 point lead, which was hold up through the entire second quarter and at the end of 24 minutes of football, Garner held a 12-0 lead in the driving rain.

After Garner got the opening kick off of the second half and couldn't get a spark on the drive, Broughton came right back and played some smash mouth football as they took a long 3:58 drive and capped the drive with a touchdown from Chris Mangus, to make the score 12-7 in favor of Garner.

But to the Trojans credit, Garner came right back and put another great drive together and again it was Juwan Moye who stole the show. But, give a tip of the cap also to Dwighty Darity, Demetrius Fairley, and Terrence Fussell who carried the ball very well for the Trojans tonight getting the ball down to the Broughton 13 where Moye capped the drive to make it 18-7 Trojans.

Later in the third, Moye would put an exclamation point on their win as he scampered 68 yards for the touchdown and the final points of the game as the Trojans defeat Broughton 24-7.

The Trojans would finish the game with 312 rushing yards and 25 passing yards (337 total yards). While Broughton only managed 111 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, Juwan Moye finished the game with 18 carries for 203 yards a 4 touchdowns.

JV Football Comes From Behind to Down Caps

The 2009 edition of the JV Trojans took the field for the first time on Thursday night as they hosted the Broughton Capitals at Trojan Stadium.

Garner (1-0) would get on the board first on their second possession of the night as a ten play, 71 yard drive was capped by a Raevon Smith 24 yard touch down run, however the PAT was no good and the Trojans had a 6-0 lead. Broughton wasted little time getting on the board as they scored on the very next drive as Chris Whitley ran it 59 yards to the house and gave Broughton a 7-6 lead after the first quarter.

After the Trojans opening drive of the second quarter stalled, Broughton went to the air and got on the board again as Will Cooper hit Maurice McClean for the 24 yard TD strike and it was now 14-6 Caps.

But Garner would respond as Raevon Smith ran the kickoff back 50 yards to the Broughton 48 which set up a Tyler Hinton 48 yard touch down scamper and cut the lead to two at 14-12. Broughton would add a late score to take a 21-12 lead into the locker room at halftime, but as they usually do, Garner came out a different team in the second half.

After Carrington Austin picked off a Will Cooper pass to set the Trojans up, Raevon Smith capped off another long scoring as he went 56 yards to the house and cut the lead to two points at 21-19.

Garner took the lead on Broughton's next drive as again Carrington Austin intercepted a Will Cooper pass, this time, Austin went into the end zone to give the Trojans a 26-21 lead, one they would not relinquish.

On the Capitals very next drive, Aaron Roberts coughed up the football and gave it right back to the Trojans who took only one play for Anthony Tucker to run the reverse 30 yards into the end zone and give Garner a 32-21 lead.

Neither team would score again until late in the 3rd quarter as Tyler Hinton intercepted another Will Cooper pass and took it in 56 yards to pay dirt for the 39-21 lead.

The fourth quarter would be a battle of field position as neither team could manage much offense, but the Trojans still managed to hold the Capitals scoreless in the second half as the Trojans rolled to the 39-21 victory to kick off 2009.

Coach Hines and the JV Trojans will be back in action next Wednesday night at 7:00 at Middle Creek High School.
