Soccer Loses Overtime Contest with Spartans

Coming off a win over Knightdale in their last game, the Varsity soccer team returned to action on Monday night as they traveled to Smithfield-Selma to take on the Spartans.

The first half was low scoring and at the end of the first half of football, Garner was up 1-0. The second half would be back and forth as SSS played behind for most of the second half as Garner took a 3-2 lead with goals by Matt Wescoe, Mat Murra and Kyle Tobin.

Garner would get another goal to go up by two at 4-2 as Wescoe banged home a corner kick. Matt Wescoe added his third goal of the game for a hat trick with 9 minutes left to make it 5-2 Trojans, but that's when the Spartans began on the comeback trail as they scored two very quick goals to make it 5-4 with 8 minutes to play and would later tie the game at five and send the game into overtime.

Garner struck first in the overtime with seven minutes left to take a one goal lead at 6-5 however, the Trojan defense tired and SSS scored on a indirect PK as the ball hit the off a Garner player, then hit the cross bar and off the back of a Trojan and into the net to tie the game.

Following the tough luck goal, SSS score two more goals to defeat Garner 8-6 in overtime. Garner will be back on the road Wednesday when the travel to Southeast Raleigh at 6:30.

JV Soccer Gets Win

The JV Soccer team picked up their second win of the season as they blanked SSS 4-0 on Monday night. The Garner charge was led by Alex Lambert who light up the Spartans to the tune of three goals as Garner defeated SSS 4-0.

The JV Trojans are back on the road Wednesday at Southeast Raleigh at 4:30
