Free Throw Line Propels Garner to Lopsided Victory

WEB CAST.

There is an old adage to take advantage of your opportunities, and the Varsity Boys basketball team at Garner High School did that on Monday night. The Trojans shot 74 percent from the free throw line for the game as they routed Wake Forest-Rolesville 79-58.

Garner (8-0, 3-0) used a big first quarter to move out to an early 21-13 lead after the first period. In the opening stanza, the Trojans were 4/4 from the line and they got their outside shooting working too. Gavin Wilson and Larry Richardson both hit some big first quarter three's to pace the Trojans.

In the second quarter, the charity stripe was once again good to the men of Troy as they did not miss a free throw until the two minute mark of the half, as they shot 80 (12/15) percent for the half, from the line. Garner had a nice compliment inside in the second quarter, as Dominique Reed scored nine of his 11 points in the second quarter to give the Trojans a comfortable 41-28 halftime advantage.

Wake Forest-Rolesville (1-7, 1-3) was able to stay in the game thanks to the outside shooting of Dylan Woodham who chipped in 11 first half points. Of those 11, nine of the points came from beyond the arc.

The Cougars came out of the locker room and began the third quarter by taking control of the pace of play. Woodham scored eight points in the third quarter, and finished with 18, to keep pull WFR to within eight midway through the quarter. Garner was able to maintain their advantage thanks to Deion Dorsey who scored six points in the third quarter, and four of them from the line, which kept the Trojans in front by a 59-42 margin.

Garner played most of their second team in the fourth quarter as they came in and did an outstanding job and built the Trojan lead. Once the first team came back in halfway through the quarter, the Trojans were up by double digits. That's when Wilson and Donald Johnson caught fire combining for three, three point baskets in as many possessions to push the lead to 20.

With the comfortable lead, Eddie Gray, emptied his bench as everyone on the roster saw the floor as Garner coasted to a 79-58 win.

The Trojans are back in action on Tuesday night for their final game before the holiday break as they travel to Wake Forest-Rolesville for a 7:00 tip-off.

JV Boys Bounce Back with Big Win

After a tough loss to Knightdale on Friday night, the JV Boys basketball squad used a big first half to cruise to a 68-48 win.

Garner played an athletic first half and played above the rim and an up tempo game to take an eight point lead into the locker room. Then, in the second half, Garner was just too deep on the bench for the slow paced Cougars as Garner eased their way to a 20 point, 68-48 win.

The Trojans are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Wake Forest-Rolesville for a 5:30 tip-off.
