Trojans fall in NCHSAA 2nd round
LIVE WEBCAST courtesy of EZ Stream Web Services
Southern Durham's Marcus Wells nails a three at the buzzer for an incredible 81-78 comeback win and end the Trojans play-off run. Garner fails to hold a huge lead, as much as 22 at one point as the Falcons bomb away from behind the arc en route to the Sectional Finals. Senior DaMetrius Upchurch comes up huge in his final game for the Trojans with 30 points and 14 rebounds. Garner had every thing going their way through the first half, building a 20 point lead with less than a minute to go to the break. After a first quarter that had the Trojans hitting 11-of-14 shots, it certainly looked like the poor shooting woes of the past two games were all but forgotten. Jamal Barrett dishes out assists like candy, en route to seven in the half, several to Upchurch who pockets 7-of-eight first half shots against the much smaller Falcon frontline. Upchurch adds four blocks as well, keeping S.Durham at just 27% shooting for the half. But the fouls began to mount, sending the Falcons to the line sixteen times and they hit thirteen.
Albert Smith hits one of two from the line to give Garner a 50-31 lead early in the third quarter. From there S.Durham goes on a 14-0 run. Garner has 12 turnovers in the third quarter alone, going nearly 4 minutes without hitting a shot from the floor. The lead narrows to just six after three quarters 60-54. In the final period, S.Durham continues a frenzied shooting streak that has them hitting 11 of sixteen from 3-point range for the game. But still Garner is in some control, with Emanuel McClain's tosses from the line putting Garner up 74-63. But another two minute drought has the Falcons narrowing the gap to 75-72. Barrett drives to the hoop and is fouled, hitting one of two for a four point lead. On the ensuing S.Durham possession, Upchurch appears to swat his seventh block of the night, but is called for his fifth and final foul instead. The disqualification is his first of the season and sends Geoff Hunter to the line where he hits both to cut the Garner lead to 76-74 with 1:26 left.
Karl Agenor is fouled quickly. He misses both shots but slips through the lane for his ninth rebound and scores to put Garner back up 78-74. Stacy Carroway blocks Reese Wiggins drive but again the refs see otherwise and Wiggins' two free throws narrows it to 78-76 with an even minute to go. A Garner turnover allows Wells to knot the game with 47 seconds left. Setting up for the final shot, Garner commits a backcourt violation giving the Falcons a last shot with 23 seconds to go. Milking the clock, two shots are off the mark but a Garner missed outlet with just 3 seconds sets up the miracle heave by Wells and end the Trojan season at 18-10.

Trojans rally for NCHSAA win
LIVE WEBCAST
The Trojans play "survive and advance" with a hard fought 75-74 comeback win over Green Hope in the NCHSAA 4A play-off opener. The top-seeded Trojans trail most of the game and by as much as twelve. Senior DaMetrius Upchurch sinks two critical free throws with 48 seconds to go for the final margin. A frenzied finish has the Falcons coming up short on their final four possessions and Garner moves on to second round action Wednesday night. Upchurch paces the Trojans with 21 and ten rebounds with Cordero Hunter adding 17 and Albert Smith 13. Another icy shooting night for the Trojans who manage just 25-of-64 from the floor but a 28-16 rebound advantage saves Garner. Sophomore Stacy Carroway comes up big for Garner with 6 boards and Hunter, Smith and Karl Agenor add four each. Green Hope gets 24 from All-Tri 8 guard Shawn Shaffer who was a stellar 11-of-16 shooting. The Falcons race to a 23-12 first quarter lead after a stirring rendition of the National Anthem by Savannah Richmond, a fifth-grader at Yates Mill Elementary. The Falcons hit a blistering eleven of their first 14 shots.
Garner starts to chip away opening the second quarter with Agenor feeding Emmanuel McClain on the break. After a Shaffer lay-up, Smith hits consecutive threes from downtown and McClain hits another to cut the marging to just 25-23. Max Povse and Shaffer keep the Falcons on top, with Povse equally efficient missing just one of his six first half shots. The Falcons carry a five point margin into the half as they post a 67% shooting percentage (18-of-27) while Garner is a very poor 38%. Barrett's trey and two by Agenor knots the game at 46 2:32 into the third. But again the Falcons grab breathing room with a 17-10 run to finish the quarter. Upchurch scores and converts the three point play for Garner's first lead at 51-50. Upchurch assist to Hunter on the break with 2:56 to go is the last time he touches the ball for the period.
Carroway finishes the third quarter and then opens the fourth with blocked shots setting up Smith for a three, followed by Hunter from long-range to draw Garner to 63-62. After two Falcon baskets, Garner knots it again on a Hunter free toss, Smith's steal and score and Upchurch's two from the line to make it 67-67 with 4:06 to go. Kameron Bryant scores but misses the free throw. Upchurch slams it and adds a lay-up to put Garner up 71-69. An Archer three and Bryant drives in for a lay-up for a 74-71 Falcon lead with 1:42 left. McClain follows a missed Trojan shot to narrow it 74-73 with 56 seconds to go in the game. Green Hope's 18th turnover allows Upchurch to post up down low and is fouled. He hits both free throws for a 75-74 Garner lead with 48 seconds left. Upchurch blocks a Povse drive on ensuing possession but the Trojans mishandle the break for their 14th turnover with just 10.8 left. Despite three missed Trojan free throws, Green Hope cannot convert and Garner staves off the final 48 seconds without the tying score to advance to round #2 to face So.Durham, a 59-57 winner over Broughton:

Trojans upset by the Wildcats in GNRC Tournament
LIVE WEBCAST courtesy of EZStream Web services
Ben Jacobs torches the Trojans for 33 points and the Trojans frigid shooting dooms the top seed 65-63 in the semi-final of the GNRC Tournament. Garner shows no resemblance to the hot shooting they enjoyed during their eleven game win streak. Defensively the Trojans repeatedly force Wildcat miscues to the tune of 14 steals and 25 turnovers in all, but convert just 12 into scores. Garner finishes a pawltry 38% from the floor, on 23-of 59 shots. Jacobs rules the paint for the Wildcats, hitting 10-of-14 from the floor and 13-of-15 from the line and adds 12 rebounds for an impressive night. The Trojans are equally inept at the free throw line, hitting just 11-of-20 while the Wildcats convert 16-of-19 at the stripe. The Wildcat win sends them into the finals against Knightdale tomorrow night.
Despite the cold shooting, the Trojans still have a chance as they cut a ten point Wildcat lead to one with 1:41 to go. Two DaMetrius Upchurch free throws with just over a minute left gives Garner their first lead since the 2:14 mark of the first quarter. But Jacobs streaks the floor to score right back and regain a 63-62 Wildcat margin. Karl Agenor is tied up on a rebound (his eleventh rebound of the night) with the possession arrow in W.Johnston's favor. Upchurch comes up with Garner's 10th block of the night (to go with 11 steals) and Jacobs fouls him on the rebound. Hitting one of two, knots the game at 63 all with 19.6 seconds to go. On the ensuing possession, Jamal Barrett makes a great block on Jacobs, but DeOnte Anderson slips through the lane and lays in the follow for the winning score with 4.2 to go. Garner turns the ball over on their last chance to send W.Johnston into the finals. The Trojans will open NCHSAA 4A playoff action Monday night at home against an opponent to be determined:

The Spartans elect to employ a slowdown offense to avoid another thirty point loss to the Trojans. Didn't work. Garner wins 62-36 for their 11th straight win and advance to a Thursday night game against #4 seed W.Johnston. DaMetrius Upchurch scores 18 with five rebounds and Cordero Hunter adds 13, on 6-of-9 shooting. After Jamal Barrett buries a three pointer to open the game, SSS plays pitch-n-catch for roughly 3 minutes without a shot. The Spartans are plagued by 19 turnovers, 6 Trojans steals and 6 blocked shots. Not taken totally out of their offense, Garner still manages an even 50% from the floor (25-50) as they do come up short of their season average scoring by roughly 20 points. Garner uses their limited first quarter possessions well, hitting seven of nine shots. The Spartan stall forgets they need to score as well, they hit just 1 of three in the quarter falling behind 19-2. In the second, Garner fails to keep up their hot shooting but still lead by twelve at the end of the half that took just 30 minutes to play, tip to finish. During the second half, Garner maintains a double-digit margin, stretching it to more than twenty as the final quarter begins and Coach Gray calls on the reserves. The Trojans (17-8) will play at home on Thursday at 7:30PM:

Trojans capture GNRC regular season crown
LIVE WEBCAST
The Trojan win their tenth in a row 72-59 at Holly Springs to finish the regular season 13-1 and capture the 2009 GNRC regular season championship. The top-seeded Trojans will host an opening round GNRC Tournament game Tuesday night at home. DaMetrius Upchurch scores 20 points and Albert Smith adds 14 for Garner. Karl Agenor despite just 5 points pulls down 20 rebounds. The Trojans survive an incredible 26 fouls, versus 14 called against the Hawks. The Trojan defense is stellar causing 27 Holly Springs turnovers, 12 steals and 8 blocked shots. But a poor shooting night (26-for-63, 41%) and 29 turnovers (the most in their current win streak) keeps the Hawks in striking range.
The Trojans take charge of the game, billed as "Hawks for Hope" by the Holly Springs squad, their admirable cancer awareness fundraiser, in the second quarter with an effective zone press. It results in four Jamal Barrett steals en route to a 18-8 Garner run. Emile Agenor's basket at the buzzer gives Garner a comfortable 18 point halftime lead despite foul trouble looming. In the second half, Upchurch posts nine in the third quarter to keep Garner in control. The final quarter is laboring as the whistles begin in earnest. Upchurch records three terrific blocked shots but a second technical foul against Cordero Hunter, allowes Holly Springs to pull as close as seven before the Trojans close it out on McClain's four consecutive free throws in the final 29 second :

Lady Trojan comeback falls short
The Lady Trojans fall despite a comeback from 12 down on the Hawks first ever Senior Night. A 14-0 Garner run in the second quarter erases a first quarter where they hit just one of eight shots. But the Hawks preserve the win hitting six of seven free throws down the stretch. Vearneasa Brown scores 17 and Essence Chism adds 10 and 5 rebounds for the Trojans:

JV Boys captured GNRC title
Garner defeats Holly Springs 69-38, to finish 15-5. With the win the Trojans captured the GNRC title!! The Trojans get 11 points and 8 rebounds from Terrelle Smith. "We played everyone and I'm really pleased with how our guys came together and supported each other", Coach Bloms remarked. "We completed a team effort. Terrelle Smith and DaShawn Stabler have come a long way since the beginning of the season and both had tremendous outings. These two guys have an amazing amount of potential and with a summer of hard work they can be big contributors next season. We also want to recognize Alex Bowling and Jarie Hicks. These two guys, even though they didn't get significant playing time throughout the season, never complained and came to practice everyday, listened to what we wanted from them and worked hard to improve their games. Their attitudes will end up taking them a long way in whatever they choose to do in life, we're very proud of them. Overall, this was a great group of guys to be around and who really grew together as a team." Congrats to Coach Bloms and the GNRC Champions!!!
SCORING: Terrelle Smith 11 Pts (8 Reb), Dashawn Stabler 4 Pts (7 Reb), Josh McClain 4, Alex Bowling 7, Jarie Hicks 2, Jamar Leach 2, Gavin Wilson 9, Jordan Brooks 8, Deion Dorsey 6, DJ Johnson 7, Domenique Reed 4, Jalen Bobbitt 5.

Trojans blast SE Raleigh
LIVE WEBCAST courtesy of EZStream Web Services
Cordero Hunter and DaMetrius Upchurch score 23 points each as the Trojans blow away the Bulldogs 86-53 to stay on top of the GNRC. After a tight first quarter that ends knotted 15-15, Garner outscores SER by 71 to 28 in the remaining three quarters of play. Upchurch dominates the paint, hitting seven consecutive shots in the second half, including two picturesque dunks. The Trojan backcourt of Carl Redd, Emanuel McClain and Jamal Barrett force 23 Bulldog turnovers and 6 steals while piling up 13 assists. Despite being their second game in as many nights, Garner starts hot, hitting 5 of their nine first quarter shots. The second quarter showed more from the impressive frontline as the Trojans streaked to a 13-6 rebounding edge en route to the 19 point halftime lead. Darius Hicks patrolling the paint records two blocks and 4 rebounds during the period. Darryl Harp's spectacular steal and score at the buzzer puts Garner up 45-26 at the break.
The start of the second half begins with Redd feeding Upchurch for a dunk and then a SportsCenter leap from just inside the free throw line for a second windmill slam by Upchurch. Barrett forces another steal and scores to put Garner up 51-26 just two minutes in. From there, the Trojans maintained a twenty-plus point lead for the remainder of the half on their way to win number eight in a row. Garner travels to Holly Springs Friday night for the conclusion of the GNRC regular season:

Lady Trojans fall to SE Raleigh
The Bulldogs remain unbeaten in the GNRC despite a gallant second quarter rally by the Trojans. SE Raleigh races to 19-5 first quarter lead, fueled by seven Garner turnovers and an anemic one basket. But the Trojan full court zone press turns around the second quarter with Garner cutting the margin to just six. But the comeback is short-lived as the Bulldogs pull away behind All-State guard Lakevia Boykin's "double-double" pouring in 16 points and dishing 10 assists. The Bulldogs out-shoot Garner 53% (25-for47) to 42% (14-for-33):

The Trojans open the 2nd quarter with two Agenor free throws but the gym erupts on Smith's monster slam. Agenor follows with a 3-pointer and Upchurch's follow quickly makes it 31-16. Emanual McClain's steal, one of five on the evening, and score stretches it to 36-16. Agenor scores nine in the quarter. The second half is certainly more of the same with Garner stretching the lead and allowing Coach Gray to empty his bench, with each Trojan getting playing time.
