After a tough start to the season, the Garner Trojans battled back to a 2-2 record as they began Conference play on Friday night. First on the slate for the Trojans was a West Johnston Wildcat squad who had defeated Garner two consecutive years, but Garner made a big statement as they scored 45 unanswered points to roll past West Johnston 45-6.
West Johnston (1-4, 0-1) scored the first points of the game as Justin Carroll found Tyrus Colton for a touchown, however the point after was no good and West had to settle for a 6-0 lead.
Garner (3-2, 1-0) answered on the next drive, as on the first play, Lemond Johnson hit Juwan Moye down the sideline for a 53 yard touchdown pass and Garner was off and racing up 7-6.
After a one-yard touchdown run from Johnson and another connection from Johnson to Moye, this time a 20-yard strike, Garner had a quick 21-6 lead. However, the Trojans weren't done scoring in the first half as Connor Torruella nailed a season long 35 yard field goal to put Garner up 24-6 heading to the locker room.
The second half was more of the same as Garner took the ball to begin the second half and marched down the field and took a 31-6 lead as AJ Clanton found the end zone from 14 yards out.
Then, for the third time in the game, Johnson found Moye, this time from 55 yards out and it was 38-6 Garner after three quarters.
Garner's final score of the night came from Tyler Hinton who found pay dirt from 50 yards out and the Trojans capped the night with a 45-6 win on the road over West Johnston.
Garner continues Greater Neuse River Conference play next THURSDAY night at 7:00 when they host the Clayton Comets.
