The Garner Trojans were off to their worst start since 1983, however, on Friday night, the Trojans found their two game slide with a 26-16 road win over Middle Creek.
Middle Creek (2-1) struck first after a Garner turnover, however, with the Mustangs in the red zone, the Trojan defense held its ground and limited the Mustangs to a 19 yard field goal and give Middle Creek an early 3-0 lead.
On the ensuing possession, Garner (1-2) came right back with a quick strike beginning the drive from the Mustang 40 yard line. After a couple of runs move the ball to the Mustang 20, where Lemond Johnson found Bryan Watkins for the touchdown and a 7-3 lead for the Trojans.
The second quarter was a field position game as neither team yielded an inch, but, Middle Creek got the ball back with just over five minutes to play in the half and Garrett Leatham went to work as the Mustangs moved the ball down the field and Middle Creek capped the drive with a score from two yards out, but, the point after hit the upright and was no good which gave Middle Creek a 9-7 lead going into the locker room.
Middle Creek got the ball to begin the second half and on the first play from scrimmage, Leatham had his pass picked by Gavin Wilson who returned it 30 yards into the red zone where the Trojans scored on an 18 yard touch down from from AJ Clanton and took a 14-9 lead.
After the teams exchanged punts, Garner stuck again this time off the foot of Connor Torruella who nailed a 23 yard field goal to make it 17-9 Trojans.
Middle Creek followed with a three and out and punted back to the Trojans where Juwan Moye ran it all the way back for a 59 yard touchdown return and it was 23-9 in favor of the Trojans.
The Mustangs struck again very quickly as Leatham found Chris Hubert for the 22 yard touchdown to pull the Mustangs to within seven a 23-16. However, the Trojans added another Torruella field goal, this time a chip shot 21 yarder as Garner took a 10 point lead.
Middle Creek couldn't solve the Trojan defensive attack as Leatham fires four interceptions on the night and the Trojans pick up their first win of the season with a 26-16 decision over the Mustangs.
Garner will be back at home next Friday at 7:30 when they host the Durham Riverside Pirates.
