Senior QB BG Howell piles up 291 yards passing and 5 touchdowns in the first half and the Trojans coast to a 68-31 non-conference win over the Pirates. Ian Hunter catches 6 passes for 193 yards, including scores of 52, 22, & 54 and Josh Brooks hauls in 4 for 98 yards and two scores as the Trojans amass a 54-7 halftime lead. The Trojans unleash a scoring barrage not seen in quite a few years, with Howell nearly perfect in the half. Still checking the records, but it is believed to be a Garner record for yards and TD passes in one half. Impressively, the Trojans are without their top two backs, Jeremy Conyers and Connor McLaurin but get stellar nights from Michael Brantley and Jeremiah Davis, who more than fill the roles. Brantley rushes for 121 yards and Davis adds 99 with TD runs of 28 & 32 yards. Howell throws just once in the second half before giving way to Cody Woodall. The Trojans ground game chews up 300 yards total rushing.

Taking over at their own 28, the Trojans are whistled for illegal formation on the first snap. But any forboding we were in for a repeat of last week's +160 yard of penalties was not to be. Davis dashes 11 yards, followed by a Brantley 6 yard gain. Howell hits Hunter for 5 yards and Davis' 3 yard dive brings up 3rd and 2. Howell hits Ian Hunter who makes a terrific cutback to go 52 yards and a 6-0 Garner lead. Chauncey Burgess gobbles up 47 yards on the ground for Riverside's first series as they drive into Trojan territory bu Carl Redd ends the Pirates drive with a fumbe recovery at the Garner 19. Howell strikes quick, hitting Hunter for 46 yards down to the Pirate 35. Brantley and Davis effectively alternate runs down to the one, where Howell dives it in for a 12-0 score.

Terrell Sanders picks off Andrew Evans on first down and Garner takes over on the Pirate 49. Howell hits a streaking Brooks for paydirt and Brandon Byars 2 point conversion makes it 20-0 with 4:22 to go in the first. Riverside loses 11 yards on their next series and punts to the own 30. After a Brantley 8 yard run, Hunter takes a Howell pass to the house and the Trojans are rolling at 26-0. The Trojan front line of Jonathon Stevenson, Chaz Damon, Brian Watkins, Ricky Denning, and Aston Anglin-Stone are formidable forcing the Pirates three consecutive series without a first down and seven tackles for loss on the night. A Riverside personal foul on the kick moves the ball to the 33. Davis picks up three and consecutive Howell-to-Brooks hook ups of 20 and 10 yards pushes it in. Byars converts again for two and the huge first quarter ends with a 34-0 Trojan lead.

Riverside is unable to pick up a first down, giving the ball back to Garner at their own 49. Brantley bruises his way for 34 but a Garner penalty, one of seven on the night, backs it to the 28 where Davis dashes in and its 41-0. The Pirates get on the board when Evans hits Ray Lipscomb from 50 yards out and Carson Sterling's kick makes it 41-7.

The Howell Air Show continues after Michael Ellis recovers a Pirate fumble, as BG hits Hunter for another big 54 yard score and the Howell PAT makes it 48-7. After Riverside takes the ensuing kick to their own 28, Damon drops Evans for a loss of 8 and James Skillern picks the next pass off and takes it in for a 54-7 halftime lead for Garner.

After the break, the Pirates score on their first series, going 74 yards on 6 plays, with Lipscomb making it 54-14 scoring from 48 yards out. The teams swap series, remarkably without any scores, but Garner answers with crisp 99-yard, 11 play drive with Davis going the final 32 yards for the score, 61-14 Garner.

Riverside suffers another possession with negative yards but Garner's only turnover gives the Pirates the ball back at the Trojan 22, where Evans hits Lipscomb for his third score of the night. The Pirates kick-off sails out of bounds and after an incorrect spot at the 30, Jamal Leach takes it the distance for a 70 yard touchdown run. The Pirates are able to pick up a final touchdown, driving 65 yards against the Trojan reserves and get a late Sterling 35-yard field goal for the 68-31 finish. The Trojans (2-1) travel to Cap 7 opponent Wakefield next Friday for the 7PM kick-off.
