Trojans End Home Schedule One Win Shy of Summer Goal

Coming into the Summer Season, the Varsity Summer League Team set out to do something that they had never done, make the summer playoffs, and the Trojans were just two wins away of reaching that goal all they had to do was defeat Wake Forest on Thursday night then defeat Knightdale on the road Monday, but first things first, a win was needed in the final home game of the summer.

Jackson Pleasant got the start for the Trojans, and Pleasant was dominate on the bump for the Trojans, as after a first inning run, Pleasant would settle down and now allow a run over the final six innings.

Meanwhile, the Trojans were rolling at the plate. In the first, Jesse Fisher beat out a infield single and later scored on a RBI single from CJ Schmitt. But, the Trojans would wait until the second inning to bust the game open.

Alec Hulmes led off the inning with a double to left center followed by a Aquail Sanders single. Josh Randle followed Sanders with a single to plate Hulmes and give the Trojans a 2-1 lead. After a Will Norris RBI ground out, Jesse Fisher singled to right which scored Randle and the Trojans led 4-1.

After the Trojans added two more runs in the third inning, the scoring ended for the evening and it was pitching and defense which propelled the Trojans to another win over Wake Forest, which swept the season series with the Cougars and set up a huge match up on Monday night at Knightdale, with first pitch slated for 7:00. The Trojan Sports Network will be on the air at 6:50 on Monday night. If the Trojans can beat Knightdale, they will advance to the playoffs for the first time in Summer Baseball.

JV Trojans Lose Last Home Game

The JV Trojans just couldn't find any offense against the Cougars on Thursday night as they fell 11-5. The best inning for the Trojans was the fifth inning when Garner scored four of their five runs.

The inning began with a Matt Hawley single, followed by a Jake Faucette double and a walk to Trever Lee loaded the bases. That brought up Taylor Stephens who tripled to the gap in left center field which cleared the bases. Stephens later scored on a wild pitch, but it would be too late for the Trojans as they fell 11-5.

Trojans Rally to Sweep Season Series Over Spartans

LIVE WEBCAST

Garner returned to action last night as they traveled to Sanderson High School to take the Spartans, the defending East Regional Champions, and for the Trojans, the game could not have started any better as they scored a first inning run as Jesse Fisher beat out a infield single and later scored on a RBI single from Brett Walters.

However, the lead would be short lived as Sanderson scored two runs in the bottom of the first off Trojan starter Jacob Baker. Sanderson's two runs were aided by three walks, a hit batter and a throwing error as they took the one run lead after one.

The score would stay the same as Garner dodged bullet after bullet as Sanderson loaded the bases in both the third and fourth but did not score. Baker would leave the game after loading the bases in the fourth and at the time he exited the game, Baker did not surrender a hit conversely he walked seven batter and hit two allowing two runs over his 3 2/3 Innings.

Garner managed to tie the game in the top of the fourth as Brett Bailey singled with one out, Bailey made it to third on a Brett Walters single and Bailey scored on a Alec Hulmes single.

Again, both teams would have several chances to score over the next three innings, but the game went to extra innings and in the eighth inning, the Trojans pushed two runs across. CJ Schmitt led off the inning with a double to left field and later advanced to third on a pass ball and following a walk to Brett Bailey, the Trojans were in business with runners and second and third and just one out.

Sanderson would then intentionally walk Matt Powell to load the bases, that's when Trojan Head Coach Trey Bailey pushed the envelope and called for Alec Hulmes to lay down a bunt as Garner used the squeeze play.

Hulmes bunted the ball right back to the pitcher Bryan Burke who flipped home, but his toss to the plate sailed over the catcher's head and the Trojans plated two runs and took a 4-2 lead. The Trojans would leave runners and second and third as the game went to the bottom of the eighth.

Matt Powell came out for his second inning of relief work and after getting the first out with ease, Powell ran into some trouble as he walked the bases loaded, and gave up a run on a ground out. With runners on second and third, Powell got the ground ball he needed as Ben Woodward sent a ground ball toward third and Aquail Sanders tagged out Jon King going to third to end the game as the Trojans escaped Sanderson with a 4-3 win.

Winning Pitcher: Matt Powell - 2 Innings, 0 Hits, 1 Run, 4 Walks, 1 Hit Batter, 3 Strikeouts

Losing Pitcher: Jon King - 1 Inning, 2 Hits, 2 Runs, 2 Walks, 1 Strikeout

Trojans Down Comets to Finsh Week at 2-1

After falling behind 2-1 to the Comets after 2 1/2 innings, the Trojans rallied to score four in the bottom of the third and never look back. CJ Schmitt set the tone for the Trojans in the fourth with a lead off solo home run which tied the score.

The four run third would be all Jackson Pleasant needed on the bump as he went the distance scattering seven hits to get the win for the Trojans.

But, Garner would not be content with just the two run lead as they contiuned to be aggresive at the plate and put up yet another four run inning in the fifth as they blast the Comets and split the summer series with Clayton with at 10-2 win.

Varsity Trojans Get Win. JV Trojans Tie

WEBCAST

The Varsity Trojans scored six runs in the first two innings on Monday night but could not hold on as East Waked put seven runs on the board to take a one run lead.

However, the Trojans didn't help the cause as they left several runners on base, but East Wake committed 9 errors on the night as Garner defeated East Wake in come from behind fashion 9-7 on Monday night thanks to a two run single by Connor Torruella and outstanding relief from Bryan Woodard and Will Norris.

After Matt Powell had a rough outing, Woodard came in to pitch three scoreless innings and Norris got the two inning save for the Trojans who are now 6-4 on the year.

Due to the time limit, the JV Trojans tied East Wake 2-2.

Trojans Split With Bengals

After a win over Sanderson just two days before, the Trojans were back at home against Fuquay, but Garner just didn't get the breaks on Wednesday night as they fell 4-1 at Trojan Park.

Jackson Pleasant started for the Trojans and found the going to be a little rocky in the game's opening stanza. Pleasant gave up two first inning runs, one via wild pitch and another on an RBI fielder's choice from Collin Carver. But, the top of the first wasn't all bad for the Trojans as Jesse Fisher climbed the wall in left field to rob Harper Jones of a two-run home run.

However, the Trojans could not capitalize on the momentum as they managed to squander scoring chances in the 2nd a 4th and Garner could only manage just three hits through the first six innings and going to the bottom of the seventh, the Trojans were down 4-0.

But, give Garner credit, they did not quit as they continued to fight against Craig Mitchell the Bengal starter who had gone the distance going to the final at bat for the Trojans. With Garner down to their final strike, Alec Hulmes laced a single to left field to give the Trojans some life, that singled was followed by back to back walks which loaded and chased Mitchell from the game.

Fuquay brought in Zach Orrison and he was effectively wild for the Bengals as he walked Aquail Sanders to score Hulmes from third and keep the game going for Fisher who grounded out to first to end the game.

Garner will be back in action tomorrow at Clayton at 7:00.

Winning Pitcher: Craig Mitchell

Losing Pitcher: Jackson Pleasant

Save: Zach Orrison

JV Trojans Rally to Down Bengals

Until Wednesday, the JV Trojans had yet to play a close game, but that all changed on Wednesday as Garner found themselves in a tight one against Fuquay. Scotty McCreery got the ball for the Trojans and pitched very effective during his four innings of work giving up only two runs and leave the game with his team up 4-2.

But, again Fuquay would battle back to make it a one run game at 4-3. Then as good teams usually do, the Trojans responded in the fifth with a pair of runs. The big hits of the inning was a double by Carrington Austin and a RBI from Matt Hawley.

After an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, Garner sent Brighton Hudson to try and collect the four inning save, unfortunately for the young man, he was unable to get the save as Fuquay found their offense and Garner had just enough to hold on as the Bengals scored three runs in the top of the seventh as the Trojans held on for a 7-6 win to stay among the ranks of the JV summer league.

Trojans Walk Off with Win Over Spartans

The Trojans returned home on Monday night as they welcomed the defending Eastern Regional Champion the Sanderson Spartans to town.

Garner gave the ball to Will Norris who was looking for his second consecutive win for the Trojans. But, Norris would not factor in the decision as he left the game in the fourth with the Trojans trailing 7-3. The Trojans then brought in Bryan Woodard who did an outstanding job in relief going the final three inning and gave up just one run.

Despite the outstanding performance from Woodard Garner was still trailing by three going to the bottom of the sixth, and things were looking very bleak for the Trojans. But Connor Torruella led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Jackson Pleasant single. The two hit single by Pleasant brought up CJ Schmitt and on a two ball one strike pitch, Schmitt bolted a two run game tying home run to dead center field which tied the game.

In the top of the seventh, Sanderson got a runner to second base but did not score and in the bottom half, the Trojans found a way to win.

Brett Bailey walked to start the inning and advanced to third on back to back wild pitches. With one out, Brett Walters reached on an error which set the stage for Connor Torruella who had a three, one count and lined a seeing-eye single up the box to win the game for the Trojans.

The win moves Garner to 5-2 on the year as they host Fuquay on Wednesday at 7

Winning Pitcher: Bryan Woodard

Losing Pitcher: JP Cochran

JV Trojans Still Un-Defeated

The JV Trojans scored early and often on Monday as they defeated Sanderson 12-3. The Trojans got five in the first as they sent 12 batters to the plate against the Spartan starter. The big hit of the first inning was an RBI triple from Carrington Austin.

After two second inning runs, Garner put up another five spot in the fourth, but Garner didnt get many extra base hits as they used seven singles to score five runs in the fourth.

While Garner was scoring all these runs, they got great pitching from starter, Steven Brown who pitched three innings giving up two runs and four hits. But give a tip of the cap to Scotty McCreery and Bob Doak who both pitched great in relief.

The Trojans are still un-beaten and will host Fuquay on Wednesday at 5:00

Trojans De-Claw Cougars in Summer League Romp

After a 13-3 win over Smithfield on Wednesday night, Garner picked up right where they left off on Thursday against Wake Forest. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Cougar starter, Nick Boutieller walked five consecutive batters as Garner put up a three spot in the opening inning.

But the Trojans were far from done in the bottom of the second, Garner really got to Boutieller as they scored six runs. With one out, Jackson Pleasant singled which really got things going, Josh Randle would follow with a single to load the bases and Brett Bailey and Alec Hulmes both delivered RBI singles before Brett Walters singled to score a run and Jared Newbry capped the scoring with his first Varsity RBI.

With the Trojans up 9-2 going to the bottom of the fourth, you could tell the Trojans wanted to end the game in just four and a half innings and they did just that. Brett Walters was the first Trojan to hit in the bottom of the fourth and on a one ball, two strike pitch, Walters blasted a solo shot to right field, which was extra special for the Trojan left fielder as his grandmother was in the stands celebrating her birthday.

Again the Trojans kept on going after back to back walks Jackson Pleasant and CJ Schmitt had back to back singles. However, the big blow of the inning came from Brett Bailey who doubled to left field to clear the bases and give the Trojans at 14-2 lead.

While Garner was pounded the Cougar pitching, Jackson Pleasant and Alec Hulmes were dealing on the bump for the Trojans. Pleasant who would start the game for the Trojans worked only three innings giving up just one run, scattering six hits and picked up his second win of the season.

Wake Forest added a late run in the top of the fifth, but it wouldn't be nearly enough as Garner improved to 4-2 on the year as they host Sanderson on Monday at Trojan Park, beginning at 7:00

Winning Pitcher: Jackson Pleasant

Losing Pitcher: Nick Boutieller

JV Trojans Keep On Rolling

It was the same story, different day for the JV Trojans as they hosted Wake Forest at Trojan Park on Thursday afternoon. The Trojans got three runs in the bottom of the first as Vince Jefferies singled to start the inning and would later score on a pass ball which preceded RBI base hits from Jake Faucette and Levin Woodall.

That would really be all that the Trojan pitchers would need, but give Wake Forest credit, they really hung in the game down just 4-1 going to the bottom of the fourth. That's when Garner really began to bust the game open. Matt Hawley doubled to begin the Trojan fourth and scored on a bases loaded walk to Taylor Stephens another bases loaded walked scored Woodall and the fourth inning scoring was capped when Carrington Austin got a very painful RBI as he was hit by a pitch, but his pain paid off for the Trojans as Austin Walker scored.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Trojans kept pouring it on with a four spot to take a 11-2 lead and with the bases loaded and just one out. The game was called due to the JV time limit. But the Trojans still got the win to improve to 6-0 on the year.

They also host Sanderson on Monday beginning at 5:00

Trojans Slay Spartans to Sweep Season Series

After a 4-2 win at Smithfield on Tuesday night, the Trojans hosted the Spartans at Trojan Park on Wednesday night. Garner started Matt Hawley who was making his first career Varsity start and didn't pitch bad.

Hawley gave up a first inning run on a solo home run by Kevin Rose, but Garner would respond in the bottom half as Jesse Fisher led off the bottom of the first as he homered on the very first pitch to tie the game.

After the Spartans got two in the top of the third, the Trojans bounced right back in the bottom half with a three spot as CJ Schmitt singled home Fisher and Brett Bailey and Alec Hulmes both had RBI singles to chase the Spartan starter from the game.

But, the Trojans were no where near done as they sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored six runs all six runs came on solid singles and a few Spartan walks.

Garner would end the game in the bottom of the fifth as they were up 10-3 going into the fifth. With one out, Schmitt singled, which was followed by a Josh Randle singled and a Brett Bailey single which scored Schmitt and Hulmes singled to score Bailey and the game winning hit came from Brett Walters who singled to left to plate the game winning run and give the Trojans a 13-3 win over SSS.

Garner is now 3-2 on the season as they host Wake Forest-Rolesville at Trojan Park tomorrow night.

Winning Pitcher - Matt Hawley

Losing Pitcher - Blake Mitchell

JV Still Undefeated with Win over SSS

Garner gave SSS a first inning run in the JV game but responded in the bottom half with three runs. Vince Jefferies singled and scored on a two run double by Jake Faucette and Aquail Sanders scored the final first inning run for Garner as Austin Walker singled him home.

The game was tied at four going to the bottom of the fourth when Garner began to put some distance between themselves and SSS as they score two runs in the fourth, but the big inning for Garner was the fifth inning as Taylor Stephens singled and advanced to second on a throwing error, Skylar Strickland then reached and both he and Stephens scored on Spartan errors.

The inning continued for Jared Newbry who singled to right and later scored on a two run triple by Vince Jefferies. The big blow of the inning came from Aquail Sanders who homered to DEEP left center field to give the Trojans an 11-4 lead.

Garner would go on to win the game 12-4 and improve to 5-0 on the year. Garner will also host Wake Forest-Rolesville at 5:00 on Thursday

Norris Dominant In Win Over Spartans

LIVE WEBCAST

Will Norris was the tough luck loser in his first Varsity start this summer against East Wake and after a tough loss at South Central, the Trojans rebounded very nice on Tuesday night at Spartan Field at SSS.

With the game scoreless in the top of the second, the Trojans struck first as CJ Schmitt led off the inning with a single and after a walk, Colin Perry laid down a bunt that the Spartan pitcher miss handled allowing Perry to reach which set up a sacrifice fly from Brett Walters then, Alec Hulmes laid down a great bunt as Garner squeezed home a run.

After another great inning from Norris, Garner went right back to work in the fourth with two outs as Brett Walters sent a looping fly ball to left field which fell in for a hit and hustling all the way, Walters ended up at second which proved to be hit as the very next batter, Alec Hulmes doubled to left to plate another run and give Garner a 3-0 lead.

The final Trojan run of the game came in the sixth when Colin Perry led off the inning with a single and Connor Torruella got his first Varsity hit of the summer and it was an RBI single back up the middle and Garner led 4-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, Garner sent Norris back out to try for the complete game shut out and after getting the first out, he ran into a bit of trouble as he loaded the bases with two outs before Blake Mitchell got a two run single which lifted Norris from the game as the Trojan crowd gave him a good hand as Jacob Baker came in to get the final strikeout of the game and his first save of the summer.

The 4-2 win gives the Trojans at 2-2 record on the season as they host Smithfield-Selma tomorrow at 7:00 at Trojan Park. The JV game begins at 5:00.

Winning Pitcher: Will Norris - 6 2/3 Innings, 7 Hits, 2 Runs, 1 Walk, 8 Strikeouts

JV Improves to 4-0

The JV Summer team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 12-7 win over SSS game one of the double header. Steven Brown got his second win of the season for the Trojans who scored 10 runs in the second inning and staved off a late Spartan rally to win the game.

Summer League Splits With East Wake

After a very impressive win over Knightdale to begin the season, the Varsity Trojans dropped their first game of the summer as they fell to East Wake 5-1 at Trojan Park on Thursday night.

East Wake got on the board in the opening frame on a three-run home run by Taylor Griswold off Trojan starter Will Norris. However, after the rough first inning, Norris would settle down allowing just one more run over his final five innings of work and Norris gave his team a chance to win.

But, it wouldn't be the night for the Trojans as Garner couldn't string hits together leaving a total of 9 runners on base. The loan Trojan run of the night came in the fifth when Jackson Pleasant doubled home Brett Bailey from first, but that would be about the only highlight for the Trojans on the offensive side as they fall to 1-1 as they head into their first road game of the year on Monday night at South Central High School.

Steven Brown got the ball for the Trojans in game two and pitch four outstanding shut out innings for the Trojans giving up only two hits and picking up his first win of the year.

Meanwhile, the Trojan offensive was getting it done. Garner put three runs on the board in the very first inning as Aquail Sanders doubled home Vince Jeffries and after a RBI ground out by Jake Faucette, Carrington Austin capped the first inning scoring with an RBI single to right.

Garner really poured it on in the third as they put a four spot on the board to make it 8-0. But, the Trojans were not done as the plate two more runs, one in the fourth and fifth to take home their second win of the year.

The JV Trojans are back in action Monday at Green Hope.

Summer Teams Sweep Knights in Home Opener

After finishing the regular season third in the Conference and going to the second round of the State Playoffs, the Varsity Summer Baseball team at Garner was looking to build upon that success as they hosted and defeated the Knightdale 10-4 at Trojan Park to begin the summer campaign.

Garner starter Jackson Pleasant, gave up two early first inning runs on a two run home run by Knightdale’s Michael Green, but following the home run, Pleasant settled down and bulldogged his way through five innings allowing just the two runs in the opening frame.

It didn’t take long for the Trojans to respond offensively as they picked up runs in each of the first three runs to take a 4-2 lead. But, Garner really opened things up in the fourth inning as they plated four runs and chased the Knightdale starter from the game. However, the Garner cause was really aided by six Knightdale errors.

Garner would add runs in both the fifth as sixth as they scored in every inning to take the 10-4 lead going to the seventh inning and Jacob Baker came on to nail things down for the Trojans.

Post 232 returned home on Monday night as they welcomed Clayton Post 71 to town. Garner would get 6 strong innings from starter Sean Willingham, as he allowed just three runs, as Post 232 held on to defeat Clayton 8-5 on Monday night.

Garner got the scoring started in the bottom of the first when Hunter Brown doubled down the right field line to plate Micheal Zeblo to give Garner a 1-0 lead. Clayton would answer in the top of the second to tie the game.

But Post 232 would come right back in the bottom of the third as Zeblo scored again this down on a Post 71 error. But, again Clayton would answer in the top of the fourth to tie the game again.

Garner would finally get to Post 71 starter Chris Hinton in the sixth, Jeremy Conyers led off the inning with a double to right center, Pat Monahan then tried to get down a sac bunt, but the throw over threw third base as they tried to get Conyers who was on the move and Garner had runners at the corners.

After a walk to Zeblo loaded the bases, Dillon Creech singled to plate Conyers. Fuquay alum, Daniel Terry was the next to hit and he laced a double to right which scored two more runs and gave Garner a 6-2 lead. Post 232 added two more runs in the sixth when Hunter Brown singled home Terry and Paco Martin singled home Brown.

Softball Loses a Heartbreaker

LIVE WEBCAST .

The Varsity Softball team returned home on Wednesday night as they hosted Fuquay-Varina in round 3 of the State 4A Softball Playoffs. Garner would fall behind in the first inning as Camice Patterson, the Bengal lead off hitter was hit with the pitch and later came around to score on a bases loaded walk.

Fuquay still had a run one lead as Bengal starter, Alex Ryan held Garner in check. But, Fuquay would capitalize in the third inning as Alexa Cannon singled with one out and the single was followed by a two-run home run but Natile Buddle over the left field wall and Garner was down 3-0.

But, Garner didn't stay down long as they jumped right back on the board in the bottom of the fourth, Nadia Jeffries led off the inning with a double to left field then advanced over to third on a Christie Wright ground out, and Jeffries scored on a pass ball to make it 3-1.

It would stay 3-0 going to the bottom of the 6th, that's when Garner found some offense, Kasey Hamrick led off the bottom of the sixth with a line drive double to left and after a strikeout, Nadia Jeffries beat out an infield single to put runners at first and third.

Jeffries spent little time at first as she stole second, which was her 45th stolen base of the year and tied her for first in the state. With two outs in the inning, Garner still had the runners at second and third and that's when Christie Wright helped her own cause with a line drive base hit to center to plate the two runs and tie the game at three a piece.

Each team had chances to win the game in the seventh, but neither team could get the hit they needed when they needed it and we went to extra innings, and the two teams played forever.

After walking the lead off hitter in the top of the 8th, Wright settled down to get get Garner out of the inning. The Lady Trojans couldn't muster in offense in the 8th or 9th as they went down in order in both innings.

In the 10th, things went sour for Garner as they just didn't get the breaks they needed and the ball seemed to bounce the opposite way as Fuquay put up five runs in the top of the inning to take an 8-3 lead.

The five run deficit was too much for Garner to overcome in the bottom of the 10th and the two hour 46 minute contest came to a close with Fuquay-Varina advancing to the 4th round.

Garner finishes the season with a very impressive body of work. The Lady Trojans finish the season at 23-4, and both the regular season and conference tournament champions.

Also, the Garner Trojans want to say their thanks to the two Seniors on the Softball team, Nadia Jeffries, and Christie Wright for their dedication to the program and all the heart they gave during their careers.

After Wakefield added a run in the top of the second, Garner responded with a two spot in bottom half. Again, Jeffries and Powell would reach to start the inning and again it would be Kimmie Stewart who singled home Jeffries and Ashley Carroll drove in Powell on a sacrifice fly.

Garner kept the pressure on in the fourth inning with a three spot. With one out, Jeffries singled, stole second and third and later scored on a ground out by Mary-Scott Powell. Christie Wright singled to put two on before Stewart doubled home Wright and Carroll doubled again to plate Morgan Dake who was running for Stewart.

With Garner leading 9-1 in the bottom of the fifth, they needed just two runs to end the ball game. Hailie Warner got things going with a solid single to center that the Wolverines center fielder over ran allowing Warner to reach third. She would score on a RBI single from Kasey Hamrick.

Following a Anna Burton sacrifice bunt, which put Hamrick at second, Jeffries grounded to second to put the Lady Trojans 11th run just 60 feet away. Hamrick would cross the plate as Mary-Scott Powell beat out an infield hit which won the game for Garner.

Softball Survives First Round Scare and Advances to Round Two

It wasn't always pretty on Tuesday night for the Varsity Softball team, but a win is a win, and this time of year the name of the game is Survive and advance and that is just what Garner did on Tuesday in their 3-2 victory over Athens Drive in the first round of the State Softball Playoffs.

Garner gave Christie Wright some early runs to play with in the bottom of the first when Garner had back to back singles by Wright and Kimmie Stewart to begin the inning. The Lady Trojans then plated those two on a two run double by Ashley Carroll.

Athens Drive scored in the 6th inning after Wright walked the first batter, and a fielder's choice moved the runner to second. Then, two passed balls scored two runs in the 6th for the Jaguars and tied the score at two.

But the tie score would be short lived as Garner rallied in the bottom of the sent as Ashley Carroll, led off the inning with a base hit to right. Anna Burton then came on for Ashley Carroll as a pinch runner. Raven Smith's fielder's choice moved Burton to second. Halie Warner then single to left field to plate Burton and score the winning run!

Garner (22-3) will now advance to the second round of the State Playoffs on Friday night when they play host to the winner of the Wakefield vs. East Chapel Hill game Friday night AT HOME first pitch will be 7:00.

Baseball Falls to Millbrook in Round 2 of State Playoffs

LIVE WEBCAST

The Garner Trojans had a tough rode to hoe on Tuesday night when they traveled to take on the Millbrook Wildcats in round two of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association State Baseball Playoffs. Millbrook came into the game at 19-5 and the number one seed in the Cap-7 Conference.

The Wildcats struck first in the bottom of the very first inning as Trojan starter, Jacob Baker hit lead off hitter Ryan Hanks and after a steal of second, Hanks scored the games first run. After another unearned run in the second inning, Garner needed some offense, and had a shot in both the second and third innings as they put runners in scoring position in both the second and third, but could not score.

With Millbrook leading 4-0, Garner needed to score in a bad way, and they did just that in the top of the fourth. Hunter Brown was hit with a pitch to lead off the inning after a fly out, Pat Monahan walked and Phillip Myrick singled to plate Colin Perry (running for Brown) to make it 4-1.

But Garner was not done, Jackson Pleasant was the next to hit and he grounded to short, but the throw went into the Garner dugout and allowed Monahan and Myrick to score and make it 4-3. After Pleasant advanced to third on a pass ball, Gabe Chrismon was at the plate and laid down a beautiful bunt as Pleasant was coming home and Garner tied the score at four on the squeeze play.

The tie score would be short lived as Millbrook put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth. After a lead off walk,Millbrook would load the bases and plate two runs to give the Wildcats a 6-4 lead.

With the score still 6-4 in the top of the seventh, Millbrook brought in their stud pitcher, Jake Harris to close the deal. Harris allowed a one out double to Paco Martin, but the Trojans rally fell short as Millbrook advances to the third round of the State Playoffs.

Garner ends the year at 14-9, and the a third place finish in the Greater Neuse River Conference. Garner also advanced to the second round for the first time since 2004.

Lady Trojans Win Two to Capture First Ever Tournament Title

Webcast of Semi-Final Game vs. Holly Springs

Webcast of Championship Game vs. West Johnston

It wasn't always pretty, but the Lady Trojans got the job done as they defeated both Holly Springs and West Johnston on Saturday to win the Greater Neuse River Conference Softball Tournament.

In the first game of the day, Garner drew the number four seed in the Holly Springs Golden Hawks. After a scoreless first inning, Garner exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second as Ashley Carroll led off the inning reaching on a error, after a fly out, Halie Warner singled and on the play the center fielder over threw the cut off man allowing Carroll to score. After Kasey Hamrick was hit by a pitch, Meghan Strickland hit a sacrifice fly to plate Warner and give Garner a 2-0 lead.

The lead would grow when Nadia Jefferies singled home Hamrick and then, both Christie Wright and Kimmie Stewart had RBI singles to cap the second inning scoring.

Garner would pad the lead in the fifth when Stewart led off the inning with a double and scored on a Raven Smith base hit to make it 6-0. The final Garner runs of the game came in to bottom of the sixth when Jeffries led off with a triple to right, Wright then brought her in on a sacrifice fly. Stewart then singled and Anna Burton came off the bench in a pinch-hitting role to triple to right and bring home Stewart and give Garner the 8-1 lead.

Garner would then bring in Breanne Campbell to pitch the seventh and close out the Hakws and she did just that pitching a scoreless inning of relief to preserve the 8-1 Garner win, to advance to the finals.

Garner Rallies to Win Title

It was the rubber match of the season series between Garner and West Johnston and intensity of the game was turned up about ten notches for the Championship game as Christie Wright and Abby Dupree went toe to toe.

West Johnston drew first blood in the top of the third as they put runners at second and third with two outs. That's when Wrights pitch bounced away from Kimmie Stewart allowing a run to score, and while Garner couldn't find the ball another run managed to cross and give West Johnston at 2-0 lead.

The outlook began to grow dim for the Lady Trojans who had left four runners on base through the first four innings, but in the bottom of the fifth, they managed to find some hot bats. Kasey Hamrick led off the inning with a single. After a strikeout, Nadia Jeffries came to the plate and sent a ground ball right back to the mound, Dupree went to second base but her throw was wide of the bag and everyone was safe. Mary-Scott Powell then laid down a sacrifice bunt and again Dupree threw it away allowing Hamrick to score and make it 2-1 Wildcats.

But Garner wasn't done as with two outs, Kimmie Stewart delivered a single back up the box to plate two and give Garner a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the rains came and knocked out the web casting crew, but the game went on as Wright found some trouble as she loaded the bases but pitched out of the jam and the Lady Trojans would hold on for the 3-2 Victory to capture their first ever Conference Tournament Title. After the game, it was learned that this would be the final year of the Conference Tournament, so Garner wins is the last winner of the tournament

Trojans Send Mustangs Up the Creek Without a Paddle; Advance to Round Two

LIVE Webcast

Garner hadn't advanced to the second round of the State Playoffs since 2004, but that all changed on Thursday night as they defeated the Middle Creek Mustangs on the road 6-4 to advance round two of the playoffs where they will face the Millbrook Wildcats.

The Trojans got on the board first in the opening frame as Paco Martin doubled with one out. Then, Ricky Martin had a long battle at the plate before sending a double to left center field to drive in his cousin and give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

It would remain 1-0 until the third when Garner struck again as Jeremy Conyers walked to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by Paco Martin and Hunter Brown drove Conyers in to make it 2-0 Garner.

Each team scored in the fourth as Garner opened the scoring with two outs Conyers reached on an error and stole second before P. Martin drove him with a double to left. Middle Creek got their first run off Jacob Baker in the fourth as with two outs Chase Martin reached on a error and Eric Florin drove him in with a double.

The Trojans got yet another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Pat Monahan and after Middle Creek got a run in the fifth the two teams went to the seventh with Garner leading 5-2.

Garner got an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Dillon Creech led off the inning with a home run off the scoreboard in left. It would turn out Garner would need the insurance as Middle Creek struck for two runs in the bottom of the seventh off Garner relief pitching, but Hunter Brown came in and threw two pitches to get the save for the Trojans as they are off to round two.

Wright's Senior Night No-Hitter Gives Garner Conference Championship

Garner had clinched at least a share of the Conference Championship as they entered play on Friday night, but a win would give them the outright Conference Title and home field advantage throughout the State Playoffs.

This night would be a tale of the two Seniors, in Nadia Jeffries and Christie Wright. After a one, two, three top of the first, the Lady Trojans wasted no time in getting on the board as Nadia Jefferies led off with a rope down the third base line for a lead off double. She would then steal third as Mary-Scott Powell singled to drive in the first run of the game. After a ground out, Kimmie Stewart doubled to left to score Powell and give Garner a 2-0 lead.

The score would remain the same as Wright continued to cruise giving her only base runner of the game on a six pitch walk in the top of the second.

Garner would break the game open in the fourth inning as Kasey Hamrick singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Meghan Strickland then doubled to score Hamrick and give Garner a 3-0 lead, but they weren't done. After a Sacrifice Bunt by Anna Burton, the Garner Senior Nadia Jeffries reached on a error allowing Strickland to score. Jefferies stole second and reached third on a throwing error by the Warrior catcher. Mary-Scott Powell then doubled to plate Jefferies to make it 5-0 Garner.

The Lady Trojans added one more run in the bottom of the sixth as Breanne Campbell was hit by the Katie Watkins pitch and moved to second on a fielder's choice and would later score on a wild pitch, which made the score 6-0 Garner going to the seventh.

As the two teams went to the final inning, the focus was one one thing, getting Wright the no-hitter. The first batter to face her was Shelby Bishop who sent a looping line drive to right field and Nadia Jeffries had to come a long way but made a basket catch in shallow right field. Whitney Betts then fouled out to third and the final out of the game was very fitting of the night as Katie Watkins swing at the Garner Senior Christie Wright's pitch and flew out to the other Garner Senior Nadia Jefferies to end the game.

The win clinches the Conference Championship for the Lady Trojans as they head into the Greater Neuse River Conference Tournament which will be held at Smithfield-Selma High School beginning Thursday.

Jacob Baker got the call for Garner, as he was looking to redeem himself from his less than stellar outing against the Warriors earlier in the season, and he did just that as Baker gave up just one hit in the Trojans 6-0 win over East Wake.

The win, locks the Trojans into the number three spot as they will face the number two seed from the Tri-8 Conference next week.

Trojans Survive Scare Aganist Rival Bulldogs

WEBCAST

After a tough loss Monday at SSS, the Varsity Baseball team returned home as they hosted their rivals from Creech Road in the Southeast Raleigh Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon inside Garner's Trojan Park.

The Trojans gave the ball to Drew Gay to start the game as the Senior made his first start of the year against the win less Bulldogs. Things got underway at a very soggy Trojan Park as Southeast threaten in the first but did not score.

The game would remain scoreless until the top of the third when Southeast jumped on the board first. With two outs, Matt Spear sent a fly ball to left that was dropped by the Trojans which brought up Kevin Tangerlini who grounded to second but it got through the legs of the Trojan second basemen allowing the first run of the game to score.

Garner had their best scoring chance of the game in the fourth inning when the loaded the bases with only one out but could not score. In the sixth inning with Southeast still leading by one, Drew Gay ran into a little trouble with a runner on third and no one out. That's when Garner made a pitching change and brought in Phillip Myrick, who would get out of the sixth inning without allowing a run to score and Garner came up in the bottom of the inning needing a run to tie.

After back to back singles by Hutner Brown and Dillon Creech, Pat Monahan laid down a bunt, but he bunted it right back to the pitcher allowing the Bulldogs to nail Brown going to third. The Trojans then had runners at first and second with one out for Phillip Myrick who sent a ground ball to second base. Heath Mallette went to second for the second out of the inning but the relay to first base was dropped by Nick Perry and Garner still had a pulse.

With runners at the corners, Gabe Chrismon drew a walk to load the bases for Jackson Pleasant who singled to left field which cleared the bases and gave the Trojans a 3-1 lead. But they weren't done yet as the very next batter was the Garner lead off hitter, Jeremy Conyers; and on the first pitch he saw, Conyers sent a shot to left field that may not have landed yet and the Trojans were out to a 5-1 lead.

The Trojans would add another run in the inning as Matt Price walked then advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a Matt Powell single. Price would come around to score on a wild pitch for the final Trojan run of the game.

Garner got the win, but give a tip of the cap to Drew Gay who pitched great for the Trojans but got a no decision. Gay went 5 Innings, giving up 4 hits, 1 Run, no earned runs, 0 Walks and 3 Strikeouts.

The win moves Garner to 12-10 on the season and 8-5 in the Conference, with a big Senior Night Match up with East Wake on Friday night, first pitch is slated for 7:00. With the loss Southeast Raleigh falls to 0-17 on the season.

Lady Trojans Clinch Share of Conference Title with Victory over the Bulldogs

It didn't take the Varsity Softball team to pick up where they left off from Monday as they blasted Southeast Raleigh 8-1 Wednesday at Garner's Trojan Field.

The Lady Trojans struck early as they got five runs in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. That would be all Christie Wright would need as she pitched a shutout scattering just 3 hits on the night.

But the Lady Trojans would add to their lead with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth as they also got a home run blast from Meghan Strickland, her first of the year. The win over Southeast gives Garner the season series and no worse than a first place tie in the Conference, but they can win the Conference outright with a win on Senior Night against East Wake. The senior night contest will take place Friday night at 7:00 at Trojan Field.

The Trojans traveled to SSS to take on the first place Spartans, and it didn't take long for the Spartans to show why they are a great offensive team as Josh Holloman led off the game with a home run to give SSS a 1-0 lead.

Garner got the run right back in the top of the second inning as Hunter Brown led off the inning by reaching on an error. Jesse Fisher would come on to courtesy run for Brown and with one out, Pat Monahan laid down a swinging bunt and beat the rap at first to put runners at the corners. Phillip Myrick was next at the plate and with Fisher dashing down the third baseline, Myrick laid down a bunt to score the run and tie the game on the squeeze play. But SSS came right back and put a five spot on the board to make it 6-1 after two innings.

But give the Trojans credit, they didn't give up as they got two runs back in the top of the fourth. Ricky Martin led off the inning with a single to left. Hunter Brown then came to the plate and sent a ground ball to third. Josh Holloman fired to second looking to get Martin but he fired the ball into right field allowing Martin and Brown to wind up and second and third with no one out. Following a strikeout, Pat Monahan laced a double off the wall in right to plate two and make it a 3 run game at 6-3.

It looked like Garner would stay in the game as Trojan reliever, Jacob Baker got the first two outs of the fourth with no problem, but after a bunt single and a infield single SSS had a threat brewing, that's when Bryant Noteaboom homered to left to make it 9-3 Spartans and they never looked back.

Garner added a couple late runs including a solo home run by Jeremy Conyers to lead off the seventh, but it was not enough as the Trojans lost a tough one 11-5 at SSS. The Trojans are now 7-5 in the Conference as they host Southeast Raleigh Tuesday night at 7:00 at Trojan Park
