Brooks, Upchurch dominate the Bulldogs

The Trojan frontline of Dametrius Upchurch and Josh Brooks easily dominate the paint all night in 78-54 win at SE Raleigh. The Bulldogs open the night with cheers of "we beat you in football...." and then proceed to get mopped off their own floor. Garner opens with a 20-6 first quarter and never trails by less than eleven in the cakewalk. Along with Darius Hicks, the Trojans out-rebound SE 32-20 and Garner backcourt comes up with nine steals and force 19 turnovers while committing just 12 (four in the closing few minutes with the game in hand).

Brooks, showing no signs of the ankle injury that took him out of the Enloe game Wednesday, with 23 points and adds 10 rebounds and an efficient 9 of 13 from the floor. Upchurch is a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor to finish with 14 and adds 5 blocked shots. Cordero Hunter rains in 4 long -range three's and finishes with 16.

Garner shoots 83% in the opening quarter (5 of 6). Tied four all, the Trojan reel off a 16-2 run, with the highlight a sweet Eric Grissett steal, feeding Brooks for a layup. A quick Bulldog turnover and Hunter hits a three. Upchurch registers consecutive blocked shots and Jamall Barrett finishes the period with two steals and 4 assists, with just one turnover for Garner. In the second, Brooks is everywhere, offensive and defensively. Hitting one of two from the line, he steals the ball and hits, then gathers two boards on a flurry under the Trojan basket where 5 consecutive shots are missed before Albert Smith is fouled. Smith hits both to put Garner up 28-13. After a SE turnover, Brooks drains two from the line and rejects a Bulldog fast break shot. Later, Smith strips the ball and forwards to Brooks on the break for a two hand slam with 1:11 to go in the half. Another Hunter trey ends the half with Garner up 35-19.

The Bulldogs John Taylor keeps the game from a total laugher with consecutive three's and adds four from the line in the third. Jamall Barrett continues to find the open Trojans with another steal to Upchurch for a monster slam and get three rejections. Grissett bombs a long three and the period ends with Brooks hitting two from the line for a 52-36 score. Upchurch opens the final period scoring with a great spin move, a Brooks dunk and Barrett converting off an Emanuel McClain steal to put Garner up by twenty. Hunter converts two from the free throw line and a 3-pointer sandwiched around a Taylor three. Brooks converts a three point play to cause a SE timeout, with Garner up 70-46 with 2:48 left in the game. After Carl Redd makes consecutive steals, feeding Grissett who converts both free throws and hitting a foul shot of his own, Coach Gray empties the bench. Matt Koshielly nails a jumper from the wing for a happy ride back up Creech Road and the 78-54 final score. The Trojans move to 3-1 in the conference:

JV Trojans sweep the Bulldogs, girls remain unbeaten

Garner nips SE Raleigh 57-55 behind Gavin Wilson's 25 points. Deion Dorsey steals the inbound pass as time expires to seal the win. Jamar Leach's free throws with 32 seconds to go turn out to be the winning points in a thrilling, hard fought GNRC game at Garner. Wilson pulls down 8 rebounds to go with his 8 of 13 shooting from the floor, including six straight at one point. Jalen Bobbitt sparks the Trojans (8-3) off the bench with 10 points, 4 key rebounds and two steals.

After a 5-0 start by the Bulldogs, Jordan Brooks hits to put Garner on the board and Bobbitt drops in two buckets to even things at 6-6. Dorsey scores on a follow shot to end the first with SE up 15-11. The Trojans force 9 second quarter Bulldog turnovers but hit just 5 of 14 from the floor as the game remains close, 28-24 at the half.

At the start of the second half, Coach Bloms and the team come straight from the locker room to the tip circle, with no warm-up. On a defensive mission, Wilson and Brooks control the paint with rejections sandwiched around Bulldog turnovers. Josh McClain steal leads to a Wilson lay-up and Garner's first lead at 5:34 of the third. Wilson has 12 points in the quarter and Garner leads 43-37 after three. The Bulldogs come back to knot the game at 49 all in the fourth. A Wilson three point play gives the Trojans a 52-49, but the Bulldogs tie it again on free throws with 1:23 left. Dorsey hits two huge free throws for a Garner margin. After a Wilson foul, Tony Hines misses both free throws with 39 seconds to go. The Bulldogs are forced to foul and send Leach to the line. He hits both to put Garner up 57-52. Joshua Newkirk hits a three for SE with just 16 seconds on the clock. The Bulldogs have a chance but miss four foul shots and their final chance ends with 1.5 as Dorsey snatches the inbound attempt:

JV Girls route the Bulldogs
Jamesia Rouse leads the 10-0 Lady Trojans with 18 and Kima Sidberry scores 17 for the Lady Trojans who survive a poor shooting night to blowout SE Raleigh 55-32. A very physical game, which saw three Bulldogs foul out and 4 Trojans with three or more fouls, the Trojans dominate the boards, for repeated second chances. Whitney Harrington pulls down 12 rebounds to go with her 11 points.

The teams mix it up from the beginning, with multiple fouls and diving for loose balls. Rouse free throw shooting gives the Trojans an edge in the first period. Jennifer Steinbach feeds Rouse on the break for a lay-up and after a Rouse 3-pointer, the Trojans finish the period up 14-5. Garner forces 12 turnovers while incurring just five allowing just one Bulldog field goal. The second period is fast paced and again very physical, with both teams parading to the foul line, but the defenses force repeated turnovers resulting in SE with 17 for the half, Garner with 14 as they hold on to a 28-19 lead at the half.

Harrington dominates the paint in the second half but the Trojans have trouble finding the bottom of the basket, shooting just 10 of 36 from the floor but defense and 42-18 rebound advantage keeps the Bulldog chances to a minimum, as they get just 37 shots for the game. Garner pulls away in the final period with a 13-2 run:

Trojans comeback falls short against the Eagles

The Trojans make a huge effort, coming from 15 points down but fall to undefeated Enloe 71-63 in the non-conference game. Dametrius Upchurch leads the Trojans with 20 points and 12 rebounds (his eighth "double-double" of the season) and Albert Smith pumps in 11. The Trojans start slow as the Eagles race to a 24-12 lead at the first break. Josh Brooks scores the Trojans first eight points to keep it close at 11-10. But Enloe gets a 13-2 run to finish the last 2:52 of the period and play catch-up the rest of the night. The Eagles hit 10 of 13 shots in the first, while Garner manages just 5 of 13 from the field. In the second, Upchurch comes alive 10 points and shows his presence on the boards after the Trojans lose Brooks to an ankle injury and does not return. The Eagles (11-0) are able to run the floor and transition baskets keep them up by 40-27 at the half.

Starting the third, Garner opens with a quick 8-0 run, with Cordero Hunter scoring on two fast breaks and adding two from the line and an Upchurch follow makes it 40-35 just two minutes into the second half. They narrow the gap to eight points after three quarters, incurring just one turnover in the period and forcing 6 by the Eagles. The Trojans get as close as 64-61 in the fourth when Darius Hicks steals and feeds Upchurch on the break. but the comeback runs out of steam as the Eagles parade to the free line in the closing minutes, hitting 7 of eight from the line in the final 1:09. The Trojans (5-6) travel to SE Raleigh for a key GNRC battle Friday night at 7:30PM.

JV Boys drop narrow one at Enloe
Enloe edges the Trojans 52-50 in the non-conference rematch. An intense and hard fought game, the Trojans trail for most of the game. A defensive change in the fourth sparks a Garner comeback and they go up 47 - 41 midway through the final quarter. But the Eagles take advantage of Garner foul trouble to pull away. The Eagles are whistled for just two fouls in the entire second half. "I'm really proud of our guys, there was a lot of adversity they overcame during the game," Coach Blom said. "We really came together as a team and battled a very good Enloe squad." The Trojans get eleven points and 3 steals from Josh McClain. Jordan Brooks adds 10 points and Jamar Leach provides 7 point, 4 assists 2 steals and 5 rebounds.

Trojans blast the Spartans 82-52

The Trojans jump to 13-0 lead to open the game and never trail as DaMetrius Upchurch post 22 points and 11 rebounds in the 82-52 GNRC home win. Upchurch scores 18 in the first half on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor and the Trojans out-rebound SSS 16-6 in the period. The Trojans hit 55% from the field in the each half, blowing open the game with a huge 31-8 third period. Albert Smith adds 15 and Cordero Hunter 14. Garner owned a 29-14 advantage on the boards for the evening and force 23 Spartan turnovers.

The Trojans hot start is fueled by pressure backcourt defense and dominance on the boards. Carl Redd hits two lay-ups off Josh Brooks rebounds and Smith nails a jumper. Redd feeds Upchurch on the break and the Spartans are quickly down 11-0. After an Upchurch block, he runs the floor and hits to make it 13-0 and SSS burns its second timeout in a minute. Jamal Barrett and Emanuel McClain keep the pressure on the Spartan backcourt, forcing repeated turnovers (seven in the first quarter). They manage only six shots while Garner hits nine of 17 to go up 23-5 after one. The team are evenly matched in the second but Upchurch dominates the paint and Hunter pumps in two 3-pointers to maintain the 18 point lead at the half.

The third is all Garner, as the Trojans use a 20-6 run to stretch the lead to 62-30. McClain finishes with six steals, including three straight trips down the floor. Coach Gray is able to empty his bench at the halfway point of the final period, as the Trojans pick up their third conference win against one loss.
