BG Howell connects with Josh Brooks for sixThe Trojans survive a ridiculous 163 yards of penalties and a 45 minute lightening delay to get the road win at Middle Creek. Nearly 4 hours to complete, the Trojans hold the Mustangs on a critical late 4th down to put the game away. Junior Josh Brooks returns to action with 2 touchdown catches and 59 yards receiving. The Mustangs test the Garner secondary all night, with 44 passes and just 15 running plays. The Trojans defensive front of Chaz Damon, Aston Anglin-Stone and Brian Watkins were stalwarts, holding the Mustangs to just 19 yards rushing.

The Mustangs get on the board first, driving 89 yards in 9 plays on their opening series, with Marvin Mackey scoring on a 37 yard pass from Garrett Leatham. Garner answers on the ensuing possession. The Trojans start on their own 18, BG Howell hits Jeremy Conyers on a 5 yard swing pass Jeremy Conyers dashes for yardsand Connor McLaurin bulls his way for 5 yards and the first down. Conyers dashes for 6 but a Trojan penalty makes it 2nd and 10. Conyers makes a bruising run for 7 and get the first down on a Mustang offside. Conyers takes an end-a-round for 4 and a Middle Creek personal foul moves the ball to 39. McLaurin breaks off a 17 run. After the teams trade penalties (a recurring them of the night) Howell hits Brooks for 25 yards down to the one. Jeremiah Davis punches it in but the kick fails and its 7-6 Middle Creek.

The Mustangs gamble from 4th and 2 on their next series from their own 36. The Leatham incompletion gives the Trojans the ball at 4:19 in the quarter. The stadium was alerted there was lightening in the area and play is suspended for just over 45 minutes. Fortunately, no weather materializes in Apex and play resumes at 8:45PM. On the Trojans first play, Howell hits McLaurin on a screen and he takes it 33 yards to the Middle Creek 3. Conyers pushes it to the one and McLaurin bulls in from one yard out for a 12-7 Trojan lead, their first of the season.

The teams trade two consecutive series with penalty filled series without first downs. A tremendous Howell 57 yard punt that would have pinned the Mustangs at their five is called back for a Garner penalty. Leatham is shaken up on their next possesion bringing in Middle Creek backup QB Matt Drisko but Brian Watkins nails him for a big 12 yard sack.

The Mustang punt gives Garner the ball at 6:03 in the second at their own 46. Davis gains 10 on two carries and Howell hits Ian Hunter to the Middle Creek 34. After McLaurin picks up 5, Howell hooks up with Brooks from 29 yards out for the score and an 18-7 Trojan lead. Leatham re-enters the game and Middle Creek moves the ball to the Garner 49 in eight plays but the Trojan defense forces a punt, taking over at their own 24. Penalties kill the drive, giving MC the ball back at their own 22, where Carl Redd ends the half with an interception, preserving the 18-7 halftime lead.

The second half begins with both teams failing to score on their first possessions. Garner has the ball on their 2nd series from their own 46. Conyers and Hunter runs pick up the first down, before Howell hits Brandon Byars for 15 yards to the 22 but a Trojan personal foul backs it back to the 37. A McLaurin 9 yard gain is negated by a penalty but Conyers drives for 11 to bring up 4th and 6. Conyers breaks off a 19 yard gain for the first down at the Mustang 14 and keep the drive alive. McLaurin take it to the 9. After a Middle Creek penalty move it to the 5, Howell passes three straight corner fades to Josh Brooks, connecting on the third and 14th play of the drive at 3:47 and Howell kick makes it 25-7.

Pat Monahan intercepts the Leatham pass on the next Middle Creek series but the Trojans turn the ball back over giving the Mustangs the ball at their own 38. Astson Anglin-Stone makes a terrific defensive deflection to kill the drive. A 61 yard punt by the 'Stangs is negated by a penalty allowing Terrell Sanders gets a hand on the second punt to give the Trojans the ball at the 32. The Trojans fail to convert the second chance and Middle Creek takes back over on their 42.

Middle Creek engineers a 58 yard drive to score on Tre Nesbit's 8 yard catch to cut the lead to 25-14 at 11:49 of the fourth quarter. Again penalties kill both ensuing possessions and a Howell 48 yard punt gives the Mustangs the ball at their own 12, and the drive 7 plays, aided by two Trojan penalties to score on Nesbit's 30 yard reception to cut the lead to 25-20 with 3:56 to go in the game.

Carl Redd and Micheal Ellis meet at the Middle Creek QBThe Trojans get a touchback on the kick but failed to pick up the first down. Howell booms a 62 yard punt to pin the Mustangs to their own 8 with just 2:16 to go. Damon, Anglin-Stone and Watkins create havoc in the Mustang series forcing three Leatham misses and the Trojans take over on downs, where they can kill the clock and preserve the road win.

The Trojans (1-1) are back home to the friendly confines of Trojan Stadium next Friday for the 7:30PM game:

JV Trojans roll over the Mustangs

Juwan Moye rolls up 160 yards and two scores and Dwight Darity throws two scores as the Trojans open with a 44-7 win over Middle Creek at beautiful Trojan Stadium. Moye, making his Trojan debut, piles up 133 yards rushing in the first half as Garner compiled a 291-to-75 total yard advantage and a 24-7 lead. Eight different Trojan backs rush for a total of 337 yards while a very stingy defense holds the Mustangs to just 32 yards on 10 carries and two first downs for the night.

Moye gets the Trojan on the board in their second possession, as JaRod McAllister recovers a Mustang fumble at the Middle Creek 32. Moye dashes 17 yards and then covers the final 15 with 8:05 to go in the half for a 6-0 Trojan lead. Middle Creek answers when Riley Gallagher hits John Moore for a big 66-yard completion and John Hartshorn gathers in a Gallagher pass from 3-yards out. The Mustangs convert the kick for a 7-6 lead.

The Trojans gobble up the yards on the ensuing possession but a string of penalties, part of seven on the night, kills the drive on 4th and 32 and the Mustangs take over on downs at their 32. The Mustangs are unable to mount a sustained drive and punt to the Garner 34. The Trojans mount a crisp 7-play, 66-yard drive with Gavin Wilson piling 47 of the yards and scoring from a yard out for a 12-7 Trojan lead. The Mustangs go 4-and-out on their next series and Garner takes over again at the Middle Creek 40. Darity hits Justin Chavis on the first play for the score and 18-7 Trojans.

On the kick, Middle Creek incurs a personal foul on the kick, negating a 42-yard return. Bryan Watkins effectively stops their series, as he did most of the night registering 14 tackles, with a terrific backfield tackle on a swing pass for a loss of 8 yards, forcing a Mustang punt. From the 19, the Trojans march 81 yards on with pounding runs by Wilson, Moye and Darity and a 10-yard pass to Seth Council. After a 14-yard run by Demetrius Fairley, Darity hits Council from 31 yards out for 24-7 halftime lead.

Middle Creek fails to pick up a first down on their first three second half possessions, losing 11 yards total. Fairley chews up 35 yards on the 50 yard drive deep into Mustang territory. On Garner's second series, Darity hits Edwin Jackson for 28 yards down to the 5 and Moyes takes it in for a 31-7 tally after the Robert Stephenson kick. Another defensive stop gives the Trojans the ball on MC 32, with Fairley scampers for 17 yards followed by Andre Gilliespie taking the final 15, going in from 8 yards out. The extra point is blocked and the Trojans lead 37-7 with 6:39 to go.

The Mustangs pick up their only first down of the half on a 50-yard pass to John Moore. On the next snap, Matt Hawley picks up a Middle Creek fumble and returns it 25 yards. The 'Stangs are called for another personal foul, moving the ball to the 35. Anthony Barnes dashes 12 yards, Mustafa Woods adds runs of 5 & 6 yards and reserve QB Tyler Thornton runs it in from 10 yards out for the 44-7 final score:

Cary soccer nips the Trojans at the wire

Cary gets a goal with just nine seconds remaining to edge Garner 6-5. The Imps raced to a 3-0 lead, but goals by Matt Wescoe and Jake Smith cut the margin to 4-2. Cary adds another before Nathan Kenani and Wescoe register scores to knot the game at 4-4 at the half. Wescoe adds his third of the night on a penalty kick for a 5-4 Trojan advantage at 17:08. The Imps tie it back up at 24:15. Goalie Drew Gay makes two spectacular saves, on a penalty kick at 32:23 and from point blank at 35:32 to keep it tied. Wescoe's 8 point night takes him to 11 (4 goals, 3 assists) for the early season.

Millbrook dominates the Trojans

The Wildcats take advantage of three Trojan turnovers for scores on the way to a 34-0 annihilation. The rematch of last year's 4AA second round was not much of one as the Wildcats stretch a 14-0 halftime lead with two +70 yard scores in the second half and never look back.

Before an opening night crowd, which included Miss North Carolina Amanda Watson, who provides a stirring rendition of the national anthem, local radio 850 "The Buzz" and Time Warner Cable were pumped for an exciting Game of the Week, as dubbed by local media. Both teams start fairly slow with the Trojans first two drives thwarted by critical penalties. Millbrook fails to get a first down on their first two series, setting up the Trojans at their own 34 with 4 minutes to go in the first quarter.

Senior QB BG Howell hits Jeremy Conyers for 4 yards but a holding call puts them back 2nd and 17. Howell hits Ian Hunter for 16 yards but a fumble kills the drive at the 41. Millbrook drives the 59 yards in 7 plays for the first score with Wildcat QB Brian Kass running in from 12 yards out on 4th down and a 7-0 lead. The Trojans move the ball from their own 9 on their next series with Conyers picking 40 yards on 5 carries and Connor McLaurin adding 13 on a bruising trap draw. After Howell hits Hunter for 8 yards, the Cats get an interception, which they return to their own 44.

Millbrook cannot convert the turnover and punt, with the Trojans taking back over on their 34. But another fumble on 3rd and 8, Garner's third turnover of the night, ends the Trojan threat at their 28. Kass hits Scott Gray for 52 yards and All-Cap 7 running back Kuwon Eldridge takes it 31 yards for paydirt and 14-0 lead heading into the half. The Trojans finish the half actually out-gaining Millbrook in total yards 151 to 140.

After the Wildcats fail to convert on their first series of the second half, the Trojans take over deep in their own territory due to another ill-timed penalty of the punt. From the 15, McLaurin and Conyers bull their way to the 42 before a Milbrook pass interference moves the ball into Wildcat side of the field. McLaurin dashes 18 yards to put Garner on the Wildcat 26. But the third fumble (4th turnover) ends the drive. The 'Cats strike quickly with a 73 yard Kass-to-Micheal Thorton touchdown and a 21-0 lead with 5:43 to go in the quarter. The Trojans muster a first down on their next possession but the drive stalls and Millbrook takes over on their own 25. On their second play, Kass dashes 75 yards for another score and a 27-0 lead after the extra point is blocked.

Howell is pressured extensively all night as the Trojans cannot stop the Wildcat defensive line. He scramble 14 yards, followed a Conyers 8 yard dash but another dead ball personal foul forces third and long and Millbrook receives the punt at their 49. From there, Kass hits Malik Fair for a big 42 yarder. Eldridge take it in from 3 yard out for the final score of 34-0 with 11:39 to go in the game. The Trojans try to right the ship next week against Middle Creek, Friday night Aug. 29th on the road.

The shutout was the first of Coach Nelson Smith's tenure at Garner and stops a 77-game scoring streak for the Trojans.

Trojans impressive against Cap-7 opponents

At the Pigskin Kick-off at Wake Forest, the Trojans show impressive flashes on both sides of the ball with a 2-score a piece split with Leesville Road and 4 scores against Wake Forest-Rolesville, the pre-season pick to win the Cap 7. The Trojans hold the Cougars without a first down on their first two series, with Chaz Damon, Ashton Anglin-Stone and Jeremiah Davis recording sacks and shutting down the WF-R running game. The Trojans get a 26-yard BG Howell-to-Brandon Byars TD for their first score against the Cougars, set up by 9- and 14-yard rushes by Jamal Leach. On the Trojans second series Howell hits Michael Brantley from 10-yards out for the score and adds another 26-yarder to Ian Hunter. The final score of the session, Cody Woodall hits Kel Johnson streaking down the middle for 29 yards.

In the earlier session, Connor McLaurin scores twice for the Trojans from goal line situations. Damon again consistently put pressure on the Pride QB, with Jonathon Stevenson also recording several tackles for loss. The Pride get a 40-yard score on a 4th and 11 swing pass and a 1-yard dive. In the final goal line stand as the session ends Anglin-Stone and McLaurin record tackles for loss to end the Pride session with both teams scoring twice.
