Garner outscored Wakefield 46-30 over the final 16 minutes of basketball to advance to the Sectional Final for the third straight year with a 76-60 victory over the Wolverines on Wednesday night at Trojan Coliseum.
The Trojans (25-2) lead 12-0 to start the game before Wakefield (17-8) came storming back to tie the game at 30 heading into the locker room. Garner was paced by Larry Richardson who scored eight points to lead the men of Troy. On the flip side, Jalin Barnes scored 12 first half points for Wakefield while Romone Adderley kept the Wolverines in the game by hitting three, three point shots in the opening half to erase the early lead for the Trojans.
With the game back in fourth in the opening moments of the second half, the Trojans went down low to Dominique Reed, who after scoring just two first half points exploded for eight points in the third quarter (he finished with 18 to lead all scorers). Late in the third stanza, Garner led by five (50-45) with just 3.2 seconds left; on the inbounds, Demarcus Sanford drove to the left elbow and hit a fall away 14 foot jump shot as the buzzer sounded to extend the Garner lead to 52-45 heading into the final stanza.
Wakefield found themselves in foul trouble in the fourth quarter which allowed Garner to go to the rim with Demarcus Sanford (career high 16 points), Josh McClain (9 points) and Ricahrdson (15 points) who were able to extend their lead to as many as 12 midway through the fourth.
The Wolverines forced Garner to win the game from the free throw line which they did going as they scored 12 points from the line in the final three minutes to move to the third round of the playoffs with a 76-60 victory.
Garner will return home on Friday night as they host Millbrook in the Sectional Finals. Tip-off for the contest is slated for 7:00 from Trojan Coliseum.
