Prior to their game with Southeast Raleigh on Tuesday night, Garner honored the nine seniors on their basketball team and those seniors helped lead the men of Troy to a 76-72 win over their arch rival inside Trojan Coliseum. With the victory, Garner has once again wrapped up the Greater Neuse River Conference championship for a fourth consecutive year.
Garner (19-2, 12-1) began the game on fire as senior Josh McClain scored all eight of his first half points in the first quarter which included a pair of three pointers; not to be outdone on senior night Larry Richardson also scored eight points to give the Trojans a 24-14 lead after one.
Southeast Raleigh (9-9, 7-6) managed to claw their way back into the contest in the second stanza as LeAnder Ashe hit a trio of three's to finish the half with 11 points and help the Bulldogs close the half on a 12-2 run to make it 37-34 Trojans at intermission.
The second half was as advertised as both teams left in on the floor but in the third quarter the Trojans went back to McClain who finished with 13 points his sixth game in a row in double figures, also key for Garner was Dominique Reed who scored seven of his team high 20 in the third to make it 55-51 Trojans after three.
With the outcome still in doubt in the fourth quarter, Garner was sent to the charity stripe 18 times in the final quarter and hit 17 of those 18. In addition, Richardson was 6/6 in the second half, Reed hit his final seven from the line and freshman Julius Barnes knocked down all six of his fourth quarter free throws to ice the game and preserve the 76-72 victory for Garner.
