Senior CJ Schmitt homered over the wall in left field to plate two runs and give the Trojans at 7-5 advantage in the last of the sixth as the men of Troy won their season opener for the first time since 2007 with the two run decision at Trojan Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Garner (1-0) took a 4-0 after two thanks to a three run double by Alec Hulmes to cap the second inning. The first run for the Trojan came in the opening inning when Taylor Stephens scored on a bases loaded walk.
Broughton (0-1) answered back in the top of the third as they scored five runs to chase Trojan starter Trey Thompson from the game. The big hit of the third was a two run double from Austin Walker which gave the Capitals a one run, 5-4 advantage.
The Trojans then ran Tyler Marshburn (W 1-0) to the hill in relief and the righty work four and two thirds and did not allow a walk while striking out seven in his debut in a Trojan uniform.
Garner was able to tie score in the fourth inning off Broughton reliever Chris Schrum (L, 0-1) when Schmitt delivered his first RBI of the game with as he drove in Levin Woodall which made the game even at five before the Trojan catcher won it in the sixth.
The men of Troy return to action on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Middle Creek. First pitch is slated for 4:15.
JV Wins
Coach Nelson and his JV baseball squad earned their first win of the season on Tuesday afternoon as they downed Broughton 9-3 at Wiley Warren Field.
The Trojans will open the home portion of their schedule on Thursday when they host Middle Creek at 4:00.
