It was built as one of the biggest games of the year for the Varsity Softball team and on Tuesday night, the game lived up to its billing as Harnett Central got a pair of fifth inning runs to defeat Garner 2-0 thanks to an outstanding pitching effort.
Garner Freshman, Christina Gower dueled with Harnett Central starter, Mary-Katherine Pungram it what was an epic match up. Both teams had chances to score in each of the first four innings, but it would all come down to the fifth inning where the game was decided.
In the top of the frame, Garner got a two out walk from Christian Gower and after the walk, she was lifted for a courtesy runner in Shea Barbour. Mary Scott Powell then followed with a single to left center field and Garner elected to wave Barbour around third, but she was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning.
Harnett Central responded in the bottom half as with two outs, Jessi Lane doubled to left center to put runners at second and third which brought Tori Williford to the plate and on a three ball one strike pitch, she sent a ground ball toward short which got past Garner's Kasey Hamrick allowing two runs to score.
That would be more than enough for Pegram who struck out 10 Trojan batters including striking out the side in the seventh to end the game and keep Harnett Central undefeated in Conference Play.
Garner (7-2) returns to action on Thursday at home at 7:00 when they host Apex.

Baseball falls to Harnett Central
The Varsity Baseball team fell to Harnett Central 3-1 on Tuesday night snapping a four game Trojan winning streak.
Harnett Central got a pair of runs in the middle innings with Brian Taylor hit a two run home run off Garner starter Jacob Baker, who pitched well for the Trojans, yielding just one hit on the night, which was the two run home run. The loan Trojan run of the night came on a solo home run from Garner senior, Matt Powell.
Garner just could not covert when they had runners in scoring position and as a result, the Trojans came out on the down side.
The Trojans will return home on Friday at 7:00 when they host non-conference foe, Fuquay-Varina.
