Pitching was the story of the game on Friday night at Trojan Park, but it takes offense to win and Apex had just a little more at the plate as they defeated Garner 2-1 in the second game of the Four Oaks Bank/Tri-9 Challenge.
Apex (7-4) scored their first run of the game off Trojan starter Tyler Marshburn (L, 3-2) as Keaton Oaks hammer a home run over the wall in left. That would be all the Cougars got in the frame but they did threaten for more as the put runners at the corners with just one out before Marshburn pitched out of the jam.
Another run crossed the plate for Apex in the third as Austin Debevec singled to begin the inning and later scored on a Matt Tenuta sacrifice fly to put the Cougars up 2-0.
Meanwhile Garner (9-5) couldn't get their offense going as Tenuta (W, 3-2) kept the Trojans off balance all night long and on the occasions the Trojans did threaten, the lefty managed to pitch out of the trouble.
The men of Troy finally pushed across a run in the fifth when Alec Hulmes grounded out to third which plated Taylor Stephens. That would be as close as the Trojans got as in the seventh as Debevec recorded the final three outs to lift Apex to the 2-1 victory.
Garner returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 when they travel to Holly Springs High School to battle the Golden Hawks in the final game of the Four Oaks Bank/Tri-9 Challenge.
