For the second start in a row, Garner right hander, Tyler Marshburn, fired a complete game allowing just one run while scattering five hits as the Trojans took sole possession of first place with a 3-1 victory over Smithfield-Selma at Spartan Field on Tuesday night.
Garner (6-3, 3-0) scored a pair of runs in the first inning off SSS starter Josh Harper (L, 1-2). After a walk and a single, Alec Hulmes singled to load the bases ahead of Skyler Strickland who hit into a fielder's choice to plate a run followed by an RBI groundout by Carrington Austin, which made it 2-0 in favor of the Trojans after the first.
Smithfield-Selma (7-2, 1-2) scored their only run of the game against Marshburn (W, 2-0) in the third inning. Adam Dalton was hit by a pitch and scored three batters later on a Dylan Homick sacrifice fly which made it 2-1 after three.
The Trojans added an insurance run in the sixth thanks to a CJ Schmitt RBI single which scored Juwan Moye who was courtesy running for Austin who was walked with two outs as the Trojans held on for the 3-1 victory.
Garner will return home on Friday night at 7:00 when they welcome West Johnston to Trojan Park.
JV Wins
Coach Nelson and his JV team continued their dominance of the Greater Neuse River conference as they defeated SSS 5-3 on Tuesday night. The Trojans scored a pair of runs in the first on a Greg Stewart two-run homer and never looked back.
Garner will return home on Friday afternoon when they host West Johnston at Trojan Park, first pitch is slated for 4:00.
Softball hammers SSS
The varsity softball team, behind the second perfect game of the season from Lauren Marbery as they hammered SSS 20-0 in five innings.
Garner pounded out 14 hits on the night with Kelsey Bryan going 3-4 with a pair of doubles, Courtney Barbour was 2-2 and the big hit of the night belonged to Marbery who blasted a home run and struck out eight in the victory.
The Lady Trojans will be back on the road Wednesday night at 6:30 when they travel to Holly Springs. The JV team will also play on Wednesday at Holly Springs, their first pitch is slated for 4:30.
