Garner had many chances to score on Friday night but, just couldn't get that timely hit as they fell in the first round of the State Playoffs on Friday at Hoggard High School 5-2.
The Vikings came in to the game ranked as the top team in the State and showed it on Friday night as they pounded out eight hits but the Trojans held their own.
Through the first four innings, Garner had four hits and had left four runners on base and was only down 1-0 as Hoggard got a run in the third on a Scott Coleman single. The Vikings expanded their lead to 3-0 after four with a pair of un-earned runs to chase Garner starter Jacob Baker from the game, but to Baker's credit, he pitched a outstanding game yielding just one earned run in his three and a third innings of work.
With Hoggard leading 5-0 in the sixth, Garner finally found their offense with two outs and a runner on first, Jared Newbry singled as did Colin Perry to load the bases. Then, on a one ball count, Connor Torruella delivered another BIG base hit as the lined a two-run double to left field to plate two Trojan runs.
That sent Hoggard into their bullpen to get Joseph O'Donnell who allowed Garner to get back into the game and bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but it just wasn't the Trojans night as they fell to Hoggard 5-2.
For Garner, the season ends with a 13-12 record and the Trojans can look back at their outstanding run in the second half of the season to make the playoffs and the Trojans thank their seniors for their dedication to the program.
