For the second time in seven days Garner and Sanderson played a hard fought, physical basketball game that came down to the final moments, but on Friday night it was the Trojans who would once again prevail and remain perfect with a 54-50 win over the homestanding Spartans.
Garner (5-0) led by a single point with under one minute left and had the ball - following a couple of timeouts and what appeared to be a doomed possession for the men of Troy, somehow the ball found its way into the hands of Kyreece Mills who procured and offensive rebound and put the ball off the window and in with 40 seconds left to give the Trojans a three-point, 53-50 lead.
Sanderson (2-3) had a couple of looks at a bucket on the ensuing possession but came up empty before the Trojans sank a late free-throw for the four point win.
As you might expect the entire game was back-and-fourth win the Trojans leading by as many as six in the fourth quarter while the Spartans had as big as a seven point lead on the night.
The first quarter belonged to Sanderson as they took and 11-6 lead after the opening stanza thanks, in large part to the play of Joel Rosen and Reggie Traywick who knocked down two tree-pointers. However, the Trojans came storming back in the second stanza to send the game to the locker room tied at 22.
Garner was led by Patrick Henneghan who had six of his 11 points in the second quarter while Demarcus Sanford had five of his team high 13 in the opening half.
The Trojans, will return to action on Tuesday night at 7:00 when they travel to Northern Durham to battle the Knights.
