Scots edge the Lady Trojans in NCHSSA 2nd round

The Lady Trojans are stopped 3-2 at Scotland County in a game as close as the final score. The Scots push across 2 runs to take the lead in the 6th inning to stop the #2 seeded Trojans in their play-off bid, ending their season at 18-7.

The Trojans score first, packaging Nadia Jeffries and Morgan Barbour singles in the first. Starting pitcher Christie Wright drives in Barbour for a 1-0 lead. Scotland answers with a run in the bottom of the first and the two teams play scoreless ball for the next three innings. In the Trojan fifth, they push across a run with "Scottie" Powell picking up her 4th hit of the play-offs and steal second. Jeffries sacrifices her to third and Barbour drives her in with a double to right and a 2-1 lead for the Lady Trojans. The Scots (20-4) are able to stop a string of 16 consecutive batters retired by Wright in their half of the sixth with a walk, followed by a wild pitch to put their runner on 2nd. An RBI single scores the tying run and an infield groundout sends the runner home with a very close play at the plate for the winning run. Junior Christie Wright takes the loss despite a stellar 3-hitter.

Lady Trojans rally for the win in NCHSSA first round

Kimmie Stewart slams a solo home run and "Scottie" Powell goes 3-for-3 including a big RBI triple in the Trojans 5-run sixth in the 5-2 win over Leesville Road in the opening round of the NCHSSA 4A play-offs. The Trojans rally erases a 2-0 Pride lead and carries them to a Friday night second round game. The Trojan bats were held in check through five innings before the big inning in the first night game for Garner Trojan softball.

Starter Christie Wright starts the game with six consecutive strikeouts, holding Leesville scoreless through three. The Pride scratches out a run in the fourth for a 1-0 lead. The Trojans (18-6) threaten in their half of the fourth, loading the bases with Wright reaching on an error followed by Stewart and Cecily Parrott consecutive singles with one away. Ashley Carroll bombs a long fly ball to left that is just foul before grounding to the pitcher. Alisha Gillespie lines a screamer that is snagged by the Leesville first baseman to end the inning. Leesville adds a Perkins homer in the sixth to take a 2-0 lead before the Trojan rally.

Stewart leads off the 6th with her second homer of the year followed by a Parrott walk. Carroll sacrifices Parrott to 2nd. Gillispie lays down a perfect sacrifice that is booted, scoring Jenna Armstrong (courtesy running) to tie the game at 2-2. Powell laces a line drive to right for a triple scoring one and she scores on Nadia Jeffries bunt and its 4-2 Trojans. After Jeffries steals second, Morgan Barbour laces an RBI triple for the 5-2 Trojan lead. Wright earns her 14th win of the year with the complete game, 11 strikeout performance. Garner travels to Scotland County, a 2-0 winner over Athens Drive, Friday night, 5:30PM start time!:

Lady Trojans edged in GNRC final

The Lady Trojans comeback falls just 60 feet short as West Johnston takes the title 5-4. The Wildcats score 5 in the first off starter Christie Wright, who pitched the Trojans into the finals with a 12-1 win over E.Wake earlier in the day. Cecily Parrott, who no-hit Holly Springs Friday night, holds the Wildcats to five hits and no runs the rest of the way as the Trojans pecked back to within a run. With just a "Scottie" Powell bunt single through three innings, the Trojan threaten in the 4th, loading the bases but unable to scratch across a run, as the WJ first baseman snags an Ashley Carroll line drive. Their first tally comes in a big 6th inning, when Morgan Barbour, Amanda Beach and Wright led off with consecutive singles to load the bases again. A West Johnston error allows two to score, followed by a wild pitch scoring Wright from third and Kimmie Stewart scores on a fielder's choice to narrow the Wildcat lead to 5-4. The Trojans final rally is lead by Barbour who reaches on a walk and steals second. Wright moves her to third but the Trojans are unable to get her in. Despite the loss, the Trojans (17-6) wrap up the conference #2 seed and will play at home Tuesday night in the NCHSSA 4A playoffs:

Spartans end Trojans season with 2-1 defeat

The Trojan end-of-year win streak stops at three games with a narrow 2-1 loss at Sanderson, the Cap-7 champs, in the first round of the NCHSSA 4A Baseball playoffs. Garner is held to just three hits, wasting a Zach Howell 3-hitter. A capsule of the challenging year, the Trojans jump out on top in the third when Austin Gulley leads off with a single, is moved to 2nd on a Zach Clay sacrifice and scores on back-to-back Spartan errors later in the inning for a 1-0 Trojan lead. But Sanderson answers right back in their half of the third, packaging a lead-off walk, hit-and-run single to put runners at the corners. A Howell wild pitch plates the tying run and allows the runner to advance to third and he scores the winning run on an infield out. Howell goes the distance, allowing just 2 more hits the rest of the way while striking out six for the Trojans, who end their year 9-15. Kudos to Coach Goffena and the men for a strong finish and the service of the Class of 2008 for serving GMHS well!
