Garner placed five players in double figures on Friday night as every player on the roster scored as the Trojans hammered Smithfield-Selma 99-57 at Trojan Coliseum.

The Trojans (16-2, 9-1) began the game on a 20-0 run before the Spartans were able to get on the board as Garner dominated the low post once again with Dominique Reed and Cameron Redd both scoring six points in the opening quarter while the Trojans took a 26-4 lead in the second quarter.

After not hitting a three pointer in their last game, Garner began the second quarter with their first of seven made buckets from beyond the arc and also got great play once again from Josh McClain who scored four of his 14 points in the first half (as he scored in double figures for the third straight game). As a result Garner was able to take a commanding 45-16 lead into the break.

Smithfield-Selma (7-12, 2-8) finally caught fire from distance with James Mitchell and Seth Turner both knocking down a combined five three pointers in the quarter but the Trojans continued to go to work with Larry Richardson also catching fire and helping build a 79-37 advantage after three.

In the final stanza, the Trojans relied on Patrick Henneghan inside who scored all nine of his points in the second half (seven points in the fourth quarter). Additionally, Max Kuhns also contributed big scoring eight of his 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Trojans blasted Smithfield-Selma for the 17th consecutive time 99-57.

Garner will return to action on Tuesday night at 8:00 when they travel to West Johnston.

Varsity Girls Fall

Coach Mays and his squad were without several of their key players on Friday night but managed to hang tough with Smithfield-Selma until the final moments when the Spartans hit their free throw's down the stretch to make it a three point lead with just time clicking down. Despite the three point deficit, the Lady Trojans still had a good look at the tie but couldn't knock it down as they fell 54-51.

The Lady Trojans will hit the road on Tuesday night when they take on West Johnston at 6:30.

JV Sweeps

Both JV teams earned victories on Friday night as Coach Ellerbee and her Lady Trojans picked up a 38-13 win.

Also, Coach Bloms and his JV Boys continued their winning ways with a 65-32 victory.

Both JV teams are on the road Tuesday night with the JV Girls playing at 4:00 and the boys to follow at 5:15.

Tack has good showing at conference championship

Congratulations to Theodore Brown who placed second in the Boys Triple Jump
Kameron Manley finished third in the Girls 500 meter Dash. Boys 4x400 relay finished third with time of 3:38 one second off the qualifying time.

Coach George said, "Overall proud of the efforts of all participants in the meet, and we are looking forward to the spring season."

Garner head basketball coach, Eddie Gray has been selected by the Raleigh Sports Club as a finalist for their Amateur Athletics Award. The award is presented to someone in amateur sports who has made an impact over the past year(s) on their community.

The winner will be announced and the award presented on February 16th in an event at the RBC Center.

However, Trojan Nation needs to do their part to rally behind the head coach of the Trojans and cast your vote for Coach Gray.

Balanced effort leads Trojans past Warriors

Garner placed five players in double figures on Tuesday night as they hammered East Wake 88-63 to sweep the season series from the Warriors.

The Trojans (15-2, 8-1) started off on an 8-0 spurt before East Wake finally got on the board midway trough the first quarter. Garner's big men took advantage of their size in the pain as Dominique Reed and DaShawn Stabler led the men of Troy to a 20-10 lead after the opening stanza.

East Wake (7-11, 5-4) tried to mount a comeback in the second quarter an managed to pull to within 10 points before Garner got on a roll as Stabler scored six of his 10 first half points in the second quarter while the Warriors was paced by Quincy Jackson who poured in six of his 10 in the second stanza but it wasn't enough for East Wake as Garner lead 42-26 at the break.

The game began to slip away from the Warriors in the third quarter as Josh McClain dropped in six of his 18 points in the third and helped pace the Trojans to a 62-48 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Garner got sloppy in the final quarter which, in turn allowed the Warriors to make it a 10-point game at 64-54 with 7:10 left in the game. After a Trojan timeout, Garner outscored East Wake 12-9 to pull away in the end with eight points in the final 30 seconds, six of them by Larry Richardson to take home the 88-63 victory.

The Trojans finished the game with 82 of their 88 points in the paint.

Garner returns home on Friday night at 8:00 when they welcome Smithfield-Selma to Trojan Coliseum.

Lady Trojans Fall

Garner couldn't complete their upset bid of East Wake on Tuesday night as they dropped the road contest 54-39.

The Lady Trojans trailed by just six at 29-23 at the break however, in the second half the Warriors used their size and full court pressure to stifle the Garner comeback.

Coach Mays and his squad returns to Trojan Coliseum on Friday night at 6:30 when they host Smithfield-Selma.

JV Girls fall to East Wake 47-31. They return home to host SSS on Friday at 4:00

Swimmers take top spot

Congrats again to the Lady Trojan swimmers on their second straight GNRC swim team title. The boys team finishes runner-up with 355 to allow Garner their first combined team title.

Jessica Martin in the 50 freestyle, Lindsay Wright in the 100 butterfly, Natalie Buitrago in the 100 freestyle and Emily Martin in the 100 breaststroke take individual titles.

Trojan Athletics - Saturday Update

Several Trojan teams were in action on Saturday and we are happy to provide you with updates as they are made available to us.

Theodore Brown claims second in the Triple Jump at the Eastern High School Challenge track meet at UNC-Chapel Hill. Full results for the meet can be found HERE.

The Garner swim team captured the Greater Neuse River Conference Championship on Saturday at Smithfield Aquatic Center. The Trojans won the combined team score with 788 points. Clayton High School finished second.

Congratulations also to the Varsity cheerleaders posted a third place finish in competition at Dorton Arena. The Wake County Championship meet is slated for next weekend.

Garner thwarts Clayton

In their first game in a week, Garner placed three players in double figures as they downed the Clayton Comets 76-60 on Friday night inside Trojan Coliseum.

Garner (14-2, 7-1) start off sluggish scoring just 13 points in the opening quarter but the men of Troy were paced by Josh McClain who scored six of his 19 points in the first stanza to help lift Garner to a 13-11 lead after one quarter. Adonis Banks became the go to player for the Comets as he scored 19 to lead the visitors but scored 11 of those in the first half.

After both coaches received technical fouls in the second quarters, the momteum shifted toward the Trojans as they fed the ball inside to Dominique Reed who poured in 11 of his game high 22 in the first half and helped send Garner to the locker room up 38-28.

Clayton (10-5, 5-3) came out to start the second half and gave up four quick points as they managed just 10 points for the majority of the third allowing the Trojans to pull away as they led 61-43 after three.

In the games final period, the Trojans managed to grow their lead and finish the game contest with the 76-60 victory.

The Trojans return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to East Wake, tip off is slated for 8:00.

Varsity Girls lose heart breaker

Garner managed just three first quarter points on Friday night but battled their way back to a 24-23 halftime deficit and managed to work their way back into the game against the Comets before dropping the game in overtime 56-54.

Trailing by two late in the game, Kelsey Bryan hit a lay up before the buzzer sounded to send the game to the extra period knotted at 46.

The game was not decided until the final seconds with Clayton up by two, the Lady Trojans couldn't complete the comeback as they fell to the Comets 56-54.

Garner will be back in action on Tuesday night at 6:30 when they travel to East Wake.

JV Basketball Splits with Comets

Coach Ellerbee and her JV Lady Trojans earned a win over Clayton on Friday night with a 51-29 victory. Garner will travel to East Wake on Tuesday night at 4:00

The JV boys couldn't hit a shot to tie the game at the buzzer as they fell to Clayton 48-46, the JV Trojans will be at East Wake on Tuesday at 5:15.

Trojans get back on track with win over Central

After dropping their first conference games in over a year and a half, Garner avoided back to back losses for the first time in 742 days with a 74-60 win over Harnett Central on Friday night at Harnett Central.

Garner (13-2, 6-1) struggled to find their rhythm in the first quarter with a new starting five on the court as they lead 7-4 after the first quarter. However, the second stanza was a different story as Josh McClain and Demarcus Sanford came off the bench to each score six points in the second stanza and help spark a 20-0 run for the men of Troy as they took a 35-19 lead into the locker room.

Harnett Central (2-11, 0-6) was able to hang around for most of the game thanks to the bench play of Tyler Morris who scored five of his team high 13 points in the third quarter, but McClain was also having an outstanding quarter as he scored eight of his career and game high 20 points in the third to give the Trojans a 53-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Garner dominated most of the final period but sloppy play over the middle three minutes of the stanza allowed Central to pull to within 10 points before Garner pulled away as Sanford also set a career high with 12 points as the Trojans downed Harnett Central 74-60.

Dominique Reed and Cameron Redd also scored in double figures with 14 and 10 respectively.

The Trojans will now break for exams before returning to action next Friday at 8:00 when they welcome the Clayton Comets to Trojan Coliseum.

Lady Trojans rally for victory

Garner trailed Harnett Central by eight points with just over three minutes left in the game before Coach Mays' squad began to come back. Jennifer Steinbach nailed back to back three pointers from the corner to make it a three point Central lead.

The Lady Trojans pressured the ball on the defensive end before Keyera Williams boarded a miss and put it back as Garner took a 47-46 lead.

Central continued to fight and tied it up before Kima Sidberry nailed crucial free throws down the stretch to ice the 51-48 victory for the Lady Trojans.

Garner will be back at home next Friday at 6:00 when they welcome the Clayton Comets to Trojan Coliseum.

JV Sweeps Central

The JV Lady Trojans picked up a 55-45 win over Harnett Central at home on Friday afternoon.

JV boys also bounced back following their loss to Southeast Raleigh as they downed Central 49-26. Kyreece Mills led Garner with 12 points while Rae Britton added 10 for the Trojans who are now 13-2 on the year.

Both JV teams will be at home next Friday when they host Clayton, the JV girls tip at 4:00 followed by the boys at 5:15

Trojans fall to Southeast Raleigh

Garner had won 12 straight games over Southeast Raleigh until the Bulldgos were able to spring the upset with a 71-65 victory at home Tuesday night.

Southeast Raleigh (6-6, 3-3) trailed by just three points going to the fourth quarter as Tristan Walker banked in a three at the buzzer to make it 55-52, Bulldogs entering the final stanza.

After that three, the home squad had all the momentum going on a 6-0 spurt to begin the final quarter before the Trojans found themselves. The final quarter was back in fourth but Garner (12-2, 5-1) couldn't get closer than one point at 64-63 with two minutes left in the contest.

The Trojans were once again led by Dominique Reed who finished with another double-double at 28 points and 18 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Trojans fell 71-65.

Garner will return home on Friday night at 8:00 when they host Harnett Central.

Varsity Girls fall

Southeast Raleigh was just too much for Garner as they took a big lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they downed the Lady Trojans 72-24 on Tuesday night.

Garner is back at home Friday when they host Harnett Central at 6:30.

Both JV teams fall

Garner's JV girls fell to SE Raleigh 50-28 on Tuesday, they will welcome Harnett Central to town at 4:00 on Friday.

The JV boys fell 40-38 on a buzzer beater by Southeast Raleigh as they suffered their first conference loss of the season. They will host Harnett Central Friday at 5:15

Trojans survive Knightdale to keep conference lead

Garner was able to rally from a nine point, 33-24 halftime deficit on Friday night to earn a 63-61 victory over Knightdale and procure the poll position in the Greater Neuse River Conference.

Knightdale (6-7, 4-1) came out on fire and took a 20-7 lead after the first quarter as the Trojans went the final 4:18 of the opening period without a point. However, like good teams do, Garner battled back and went on a quick 15-0 spurt to take the lead away from Knightdale. But, the Knights went on a run of their own and closed the half up by nine (33-24).

Garner (12-1, 5-0) began to chip away and the deficit in the third stanza cutting it to as few as four points early in the quarter as Cameron Redd scored six of his 12 points in the third and with 4:58 left in the quarter, Garner trailed by only four. After that mark in the contest, Anthony Tucker came off the bench and was a spark plug for Coach Gray's squad as he poured in five points to knot the game at 43 after three periods.

The opening moments of the third stanza belonged to the Knights as they went on a 6-0 run to take a 49-43 edge before the Trojans began to make their run. Quez Crowell became the go-to guy for the Knights scoring six of his team high 15 in the fourth.

After Garner chipped back and tied the game, the Trojans took the lead when freshman, Julius Barnes came off the bench to tie a career high at 11 points but his biggest play was poking the ball away from a Knightdale player and sinking a free throw to give the Trojans the lead.

But, the game was not secure until Dominique Reed who had sat out most of the third quarter due to foul trouble hit two crucial free throws to give the Trojans a 61-58 advantage with 37.4 left. Josh McClain added two more free tosses to make it 63-58 before the Knights hit a three to cut the lead to 63-61 which was the final margin.

Coach Mays and his Lady Trojans battled the entire game and after cutting a 10-point halftime deficit into single digits in the second half, Garner couldn't complete the comeback as they fell to Knightdale 55-47 on Friday night.

The Lady Trojans are on the road Tuesday night at 6:30 when they travel to Southeast Raleigh.

JV splits

JV Girls fall to Knightdale 47-23. They travel to Southeast on Tuesday at 4:00.

The JV Boys who trailed 10-3 after the first quarter battled back to take a one point, 40-39 advantage after three before holding on to win at Knightdale 55-53 on Friday night.

Trojans run past West Johnston

After a less than stellar first half of basketball, Garner came out in the second stanza on fire outscoring West Johnston 54-8 over the final 15 minutes of basketball to hammer the Wildcats 82-35.

West Johnston (1-9, 0-4) trailed by six (28-22) at the break and managed to cut that deficit down to one point at 28-27 with one minute into the third quarter. However, that just seemed to awake the sleeping giant in the Trojans as they went on a quick 10-0 spurt forcing West to call a timeout with 3:42 left in the third.

Garner (11-1, 4-0) continued to pour it on going to Dominique Reed inside who scored 10 of his game high 19 points in the third quarter as the Trojans placed four players in double figures including Reed, Larry Richardson (16 points), Josh McClain (12 points), and Cameron Redd (10 points). The Trojans closed the quarter on a 29-0 run to lead 55-27 after three.

The fourth quarter began and the run continued as the Wildcats final scored to stop a 33-0 Trojan run but by that time the game was out of reach as the men of Troy cruised to the 82-55 victory.

Garner will be back in action on Friday night at 8:00 when they travel to Knightdale High School to battle with the Knights.

Varsity Girls earn victory

Coach Mays got a balanced effort from his Lady Trojans with three players scoring in double figures (Edris Lucas, Keyera Williams and Kima Sidberry). As they held off a late push by West Johnston to earn their second conference victory of the season with a 47-43 home win over the Wildcats.

Garner will travel to Knightdale on Friday night with tip-off slated for 6:30.

JV's sweep

Coach Ellerbee and her Lady Trojans down West Johnston 40-22. They travel to Knightdale on Friday night at 4:00.

Fresh off their championship over the Christmas break, the Coach Bloms and his JV Trojans down West Johnston 88-34 as they put three players in double figures. Jawan Grissett scored 16 to lead Garner followed by Rae Britton (15 points) and Tyrece Taylor (11 points).

The JV Trojans (11-1, 4-0) will travel to Knightdale on Friday at 5:15.

Trojans claim Holiday Invitational Championship

It took 17 tries but Garner finally completed their mission as the Trojans downed the St. Raymon Ravens out of the Bronx, New York 75-63 to win the American Airlines bracket of the 40th annual HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational.

Garner (10-1) controlled the tempo of the opening quarter as Dominique Reed scored all eight of his first half points in the opening quarter while Gavin Wilson scored nine first quarter points to give the Trojans a 22-18 lead after one quarter.

St. Raymond (9-3) who was rated as the second best team int eh state of New York trailed by as many as 12 points in the second quarter but began to come back as Nkereuwem Okoro scored nine points in the second quarter to make it a 39-31 Trojan lead at the break.

The third quarter belonged to the Ravens as they clawed back from the deficit but Cameron Redd kept the Trojans ahead with six points in the third to give Garner a 50-47 lead heading into the final quarter.

With the Championship on the line, the Trojans held their ground and began to pull away thanks to Reed who scored all 12 of his second half points in the final stanza as he finished with 20 points and helped the Trojans begin to pull away.

Late in the game, Garner was able to hit their foul shots to take home the 75-63 victory and become the first public school to win an eight team bracket in the Holiday Invitational since 1989.

Demarcus Sanford and Gavin Wilson were both named to the all-tournament team while Reed was selected as the Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Garner will return home to Trojan Coliseum on Tuesday night at 8:00 when they host West Johnston.

Trojans rally past Kinston; advance to Championship

In a game with so many upperclassmen stars, it was a Freshman who made the difference for Garner on Thursday night in the semi-finals of the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational. Julius Barnes scored all 11 of his points in the fourth quarter including a late three to lift the Trojans past Kinston 69-65.

Garner (9-1) couldn't get anything going in the first half as they trailed 19-9 after the first quarter and 36-29 at the break thanks to a big opening half from Denzel Keyes of Kinston (9-3) as he poured in 16 of his game high 24 points in the first.

The Trojans clawed their way back the entire third quarter but had nothing to show for it as they trailed 46-41 after three.

But, in the fourth, it was the freshman, Barnes, who rose to the occasion as he buried a three from the wing to knot the score. Once the Trojans tied the game, it was a senior leader, Gavin Wilson, who drove the baseline and laid it in to give Garner their first lead of the game at 52-51 with 5:09 left.

Like good teams do, Kinston refused to die and kept the game close before building a three point, 60-57 lead with 2:38 left. Once again, Barnes did the work for Garner knocking down two three's down the stretch.

With the game on the line and less than a minute to play, the freshman stepped to the line and calmly knocked down a pair of free throws to give Garner a three point lead.

Kinston had once last chance to tie the game with under 10 seconds left but a three pointer from Adnrew Lopez was blocked by Josh McClain as he perserved the 69-65 victory for Garner.

The Trojans advance to the championship game tomorrow night for the first time since 1998 as they will face St. Raymond out of the Bronx, New York. Tip-off from Broughton's Holliday Gymnasium is slated for 7:20.

JV Boys Win Championship

Coach Bloms and his JV Trojans continued their winning ways as they knocked off Athens Drive 77-69 to win the Athens Drive JV Tournament.

Trojans advance in Holiday Invitational

Garner faced off against one of the top recruits in the country on Wednesday night and answered the call as the Trojans hammered nationally ranked Strake Jesuit out of Houston, Texas 76-61 at Holliday Invitational.

Jesuit (10-3) manged to keep the Trojans close leading 12-10 after the first quarter, however, in the second quarter Garner (8-1) got a big game from Dominique Reed who scored 11 of his team high 21 points in the second quarter to keep the game close as both teams went into the locker room tied at 23.

In the third quarter, Garner jumped out to a huge lead as they dominated the boards outscoring the Crusaders 20-9 in the third quarter and took a 53-34 lead to the final eight minutes.

In the fourth quarter, Larry Richardson found his offensive game after defending Duke recruit Rasheed Sulaimon the entire game, scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to lift the men of Troy to the 76-61 victory.

Garner will advance in the winners bracket to face Kinston tomorrow night at 7:20 inside Broughton's Holliday Gymnasium. The Trojan Sports Network will carry the game beginning at 7:00.

JV Boys reach final

Coach Bloms and his JV Trojans advanced to the final of the Athens Drive JV Tournament with a 67-60 victory over Millbrook.

The JV Trojans will face host school Athens Drive tomorrow night at 7:00 for the Championship.

Trojans drop first game of the year

Wake Forest-Rolesville couldn't miss on Monday night and they used the home crowd at Larry Lindsay Gymnasium to hand Garner their first loss of the year, 80-62.

The Cougars (8-2) jumped out to an early 11-4 lead in the first quarter and were able to survive a quick Garner run to close the first quarter up 21-19. But, Dominique Reed was the steady hand for the Trojans in the first quarter scoring 10 of his game high 21 in the opening period.

Garner (7-1) tried to cut into the lead into the second quarter as they went on a 5-0 spurt midway through the stanza. However, the Cougars were able to extend the advantage to 10-points at 38-28 at the break.

But after halftime everything went the way of the Cougars and the Trojans didn't have an answer as Wake Forest took a 56-40 after three.

The fourth quarter was more of the same as the Cougars handed Garner their first loss of the season 80-62.

Garner will return to action on Dec. 28 when they face Strake Jesuit of Houston, Texas in the opening round of the High School OT.com Holiday Invitational. Tip-off from Broughton's Holiday Gym is slated for 7:20 p.m.

Varsity Girls fall

Coach Mays and his Lady Trojans were coming off a big win over SSS on Friday night, however, they couldn't capitalize on the victory as they dropped a non-conference tilt to Wake Forest-Rolesville 53-48 on Monday night.

The Lady Trojans return to action on January 3 when they host West Johnston at 6:30.

JV Splits

The JV Lady Trojans fell to Wake Forest-Rolesville 48-20 on Monday night, they are back on the hardwood January 3 at 4:00 when they host West Johnston.

Coach Bloms and the JV Boys continued their winning ways with a 74-63 victory at Wake Forest-Rolesville on Monday night. They'll be back in action on December 27 at a JV Tournament at Athens Drive.

Trojans smash Spartans

Garner didn't have one of their best shooting night of the season but in the end, it didn't matter as the Trojans rolled to to a 7-0 record with a 87-50 thrashing of Smithfield-Selma on Friday night.

Both teams got off to a slow start as the Sparants (5-3, 1-2) hung tough with the Trojans for the first quarter trailing by only eight at 18-10 after the first stanza. However, the Trojans began to pull away in the second quarter outscoring SSS 18-8 to take a 36-18 lead into the locker room.

You could tell it would be a special night for Trojan big man Cameron Redd who dominated the first half scoring 13 of his career high 22 points in the first 16 minutes. It was the second consecutive game that Redd achieved a new career high as he also picked up 18 rebounds (also a career high) and his second straight double-double.

The Trojans coasted through the second half as each player saw time and after taking a 62-27 lead after three, the Spartans could do little to slow down the Trojans as foul trouble plagued SSS all night long which allowed the Trojans to roll to the 87-50 victory.

Garner is back in action on Monday night when they travel to Wake Forest-Rolesville High School to battle the Cougars at 7:30.

Lady Trojans earn victory

Trailing by 11 points at the break, Coach Mays and his Lady Trojans found a way to come from behind to earn their first conference victory of the season with a 62-54 win.

Kiyanna Stokes was the leader for Garner as she put the team on her back and poured in 35 points for the Lady Trojans.

Garner is back at home on Monday night at 7:30 when they host Wake Forest-Rolesville.

Both JV teams earned wins over the Spartans on Friday night as the JV Girls started the day with a 36-28. Then, Coach Bloms and the JV Boys earned a 47-28 victory.

Garner put five players in double-figures and scored 100 points for the second time this season as they blasted East Wake 103-45 on Tuesday night at Trojan Coliseum.

The Trojans (6-0, 2-0) got off to the races again taking a quick 9-0 lead before the Warriors (1-6, 0-2) called their first timeout midway through the opening quarter. However, that timeout did little to slow down Garner as the men of Troy went on an 8-0 run before East Wake called another timeout with 1:48 left in the quarter down 14-0. Following the timeout, the Warriors managed just three points and trailed 20-3 after the opening quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same for Garner who went on a 7-0 run to begin the stanza as Cameron Redd led the Trojans went 15 first half points, nine of which came in the second quarter as he finished with a career high 20 points to lead all scorers. But at the half, Garner led 46-20.

Garner turned it on once again in the second half as Dominique Reed poured in eight of his 12 points in the third quarter while Larry Richardson scored five of his 10 total in the third as well to lead Garner to a 72-30 lead after three.

With the fourth quarter underway, the only question left was could the Trojans hit the century mark? They answer was a resounding yes as Foster Dubar scored all six of his points in the final quarter and with less than a minute to play in the game, Patrick Henneghan hit a bucket to give the Trojans 100 points and after a free throw and one more lay up, Garner closed out a 103-45 victory.

This marks the second time this season that the Trojans have hit the century mark as 14 different players scored for Garner and every player saw the floor.

Garner will travel to Smithfield-Selma Friday night at 8:00 before they travel to the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville Saturday afternoon at 2:00 to take on Neuse Christian.

Lady Trojans fall

The height of East Wake was too much for Coach Mays and the Lady Trojans to overcome on Tuesday night as they fell to 0-2 in the conference with a 56-39 loss.

Garner is on the road Friday night at 6:30 when they take on Smithfield-Selma.

JV Splits

Both JV Teams split with East Wake on Tuesday as the JV Girls fell to the Warriors 35-24 but Coach Bloms and his JV Boys picked up their second conference win in as many tries with a 41-39 victory.

The two JV teams are at SSS on Friday. JV Girls at 4 and boys at 5:15.

Trojans blast Comets

Garner outscored Clayton 20-8 the the third quarter to blow open a 10-point halftime lead as the Trojans coasted past the Comets 72-45 on Friday night at Jerry Smith Court.

The Trojans (5-0, 1-0) placed four players in double figures led by Dominique Reed who posted a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Trojans.

The men of Troy got off to a fast starting taking a 9-0 lead before Clayton (4-2, 0-1) came back to cut it to a 20-13 lead after the opening quarter. Anthony Gaskins kept the Comets close in the second quarter as he scored six of his team high 11 points in the second and make it a 34-24 Trojan lead at the break.

In that third quarter, Gavin Wilson dialed up a pair of three pointers while Reed scored five of his 18 in the games third stanza and after three, it was 56-34 Garner.

The fourth quarter proved to be more of the same as Garner was able to get the Comets in foul trouble and work the ball to the big guys down low to extend the lead and coast to the 72-45 victory.

Garner returns to action on Tuesday night at 8:00 when they host East Wake at Trojan Coliseum.

Lady Trojans fall short

Kiyanna Stokes poured in 19 points for Coach Mays and the Lady Trojans on Friday night but it wasn't enough as Garner fell to Clayton 69-46 to drop their conference opener.

Garner Holds Cheer Clinic

Join the Garner High School Varsity Cheerleaders for some cheer fun on Saturday, January 7 from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., attendees will learn cheers, jumps, chants and a dance and then perform at a GMHS basketball game!

Trojans blast Imps

Defense was the story for Eddie Gray and the Garner Trojans on Monday night at Trojan Coliseum as they hammered long time rival the Cary Imps 93-34.

Garner (4-0) got out to a 9-2 lead before the Imps called their first timeout of the game but the stoppage of play did little to slow down the men of Troy as they raced out to a 25-4 lead after the opening quarter.

Cary (1-4) couldn't stop the Trojans in the second quarter as Cameron Redd stole the show scoring seven of his 13 points in the second stanza and sent Garner to a 45-8 halftime lead.

The second half was more of the same as Garner took a 66-15 lead after three thanks to Gavin Wilson, who in his first game since football season scored six of his 12 points in the third. Larry Richardson helped the cause scoring seven of his game high 14 in the third.

As the final stanza came closing down, everyone on the Garner roster saw playing time and helped lead the Trojans to the 93-34 lead.

The Trojans open up Greater Neuse River Conference play on Friday night when they travel to Clayton at 8:00

Varsity Girls fall to Imps

Coach Mays and his Lady Trojans battled a good Cary team until the very end, however the Imps used their size down the Garner late 56-51.

Trojans fall in State Championship

Garner fell behind 14-0 in the first half and couldn't claw their way back as the fell to Page 35-21 in the 4-AA State Championship game on Saturday afternoon at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem.

Following a scoreless first quarter, James Summers hit Brian Spain in the end zone for the first score of the game and a seven point lead.

Page (15-0) put up another score in the closing moments of the first half as Shaun Workinger scored from six yards out to make it 14-0. Late in the half, the Trojans marched down the field where Vince Jefferies hit Juwan Moye who was called down at the one yard line to end the first half and a 14-0 Pirate lead.

The start of the second half was more of the same for Page as Orlando Hatfield hauled in a 13-yard pass from Summers to make it 21-0.

However, the Trojans (15-1) were on the comeback trail. On their first possession of the second half, Moye ran up the middle 68-yards for the first Trojan score of the night. After the defense forced a three and out, Coach Smith went deep into his play book and dialed up some something new, as Damien Ellis caught the end around and fired it down the field where he hit Anthony Tucker for a 21-14 lead for Page.

However, the Pirates scored on back to back drives to make it 35-14 before Moye scored again for the final 35-21 margin.

Following the game, Gavin Wilson was named most outstanding defensive player for Garner while Moye was named most outstanding offensive player.

Despite the loss, the Trojans will always have a special place in the hearts of Trojans everywhere as the tied a school record for wins at 15. Thanks to Coach Smith and the Trojans for a great season!

State Championship Information

Here is some need to know information for Saturday's State Championship game at BB&T Field.

- Tickets are on sale at the school until Friday at Noon in the main office (7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.) AND you can purchase them online at www.nchsaa.org.

If you purchase tickets online, they will be available at will call and no tickets will be mailed.

- Fans are asked to enter through Gates 11 - 20 at BB&T Field and if you need to buy tickets on Saturday, you can do so at Gate 3.

- Gates will open at 10:00 a.m. but once you leave the Stadium, you must pay to re-enter.

- Parking lots will open at 9:00 a.m. and tailgating is encouraged, the Parking fee is $10 for cars and $15 for buses.

- No spectators will be allowed on the field at ANY time.

- If you need to buy a Garner shirt or hoodie, they will be on sale at Friday's basketball game but you don't attend the basketball game to purchase a shirt or hoodie.

Trojans hammer Fike

Garner opened up the home portion of their 2011-12 basketball season in grand style as Coach Gray the defending two-time Greater Neuse River champions placed six in double-figures as they hammered Wilson Fike 103-72 on Tuesday night at Trojan Coliseum.

Garner (2-0) fell behind 1-0 on an Aaron Sessoms free throw to begin the game and never looked back as they went on a 10-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to open up an nine point lead forcing Fike (0-4) head coach, Brent Seacrest to call a timeout.

But, before you could blink, Garner was running away with the game after the first quarter with a 22-7 lead.

Larry Richardson helped lead the Trojans in the first half with a couple of impressive dunks and a pair of three's to give the men of Troy a 52-24 halftime lead.

The third quarter belonged to Dominique Reed as the senior poured in 11 points in the stanza to finish with 25 points which led all scorers and gave the Trojans a 79-50 advantage after three.

In the fourth, Coach Gray emptied his bench allowing everyone to play as a team effort led Garner to the 103-72 win.

The Trojans return home on Friday night at 7:30 when they welcome Middle Creek to Trojan Coliseum.

Varsity Girls Fall to Fike

Trailing 21-20 at the break, Coach Mays and his Lady Trojans couldn't overcome a poor shooting second half as they allowed Fike to open up a six point lead midway through the third quarter.

However, the Lady Trojans cut the lead to three late in the game before Fike hit some late free throws to pick up the 50-40 win.

The Lady Trojans (1-1) will host Middle Creek on Friday at 6:00

JV Wins

Both JV teams earned wins over Fike on Tuesday night. Coach Ellerbee and her Lady Trojans picked off the Demons 44-34 while Coach Bloms and his squad moved to 2-0 with a 69-42 win.

The JV girls and boys will both travel to Middle Creek on Friday with the girls playing at 6:00 and the boys at 7:30

Tim Thorb hauled in his second touchdown of the night from Vince Jefferies to put Garner up for good at 34-27 with just over a minute left in the game to propel the Trojans to the 4-AA State Championship game with a victory over Jack Britt.

Garner (15-0) struck first as Demetrius Fairley scored from two-yards out to make it 7-0 Trojans. But the Bucs answered right back late in the first quarter as Mark McCrae fired to Jalen McDaniel, but after a failed extra point, it was 7-6 Trojans.

Jack Britt (11-3) scored on their next drive after a Garner turnover as Kenny Jenkins caught his first touchdown pass of the night to make it 12-7 Bucs after the two-point try was missed.

The Trojans answered right back and were able to answer the call thanks to a holding penalty on Jack Britt to keep the drive alive. On the sixth play after the penalty, Jefferies hit Thorb in the back of the end zone for a 14-12 lead for Garner that they carried to the locker room.

After Garner went three and out to begin the second half, it was the Trojan defense that came up big pick-six with Jarvis Shelton running it back 61-yards for the score and a 21-12 Trojan lead.

Britt came storming back, though on a 11 play drive that was aided by a roughing the passer call on Garner and was capped by a Lindon Watkins touchdown run to make it 21-19 Garner midway through the third quarter.

Once again, the men of Troy responded as Jefferies gunned another touchdown pass, this time to Fairley and a 27-19 Garner lead. Britt right back down the field and scored to tie the game on a touchdown run from Watkins on third and goal from the one and after a successful two-point try, it was 27 all.

For the next three minutes, both defenses came up with stop after stop before Jefferies hit Thorb for the second time and the game winner as Garner came up with the 34-27 win.

The Trojans will now advance to the 2011 4-AA State Championship next week against Greensboro Page. Kick-off from BB&T Field on the campus of Wake Forest University is slated for 3:00.

Coming off a 26-1 season one year ago, Coach Gray and his varsity basketball squad started of their 2011 campaign on the right foot with a 70-51 victory over Athens Drive.

Garner (1-0) posted three guys in double figures led by Larry Richardson with 19, Dominique Reed had 17 and Josh McClain poured in 13.

DeShawn Stabler had seven, DeMarcus Sanford scored five, Cameron Redd with four, Sammy Saunders and Julius Barnes had three apiece.

The Trojans will be back in action on Tuesday, November 29th when they host Wilson Fike at Trojan Coliseum at 8:00.

Varsity Girls Earn Win

Coach Mays and his Varsity Lady Trojans earned their first win of the season defeating Athens Drive 47-38.

Garner will take the Thanksgiving holiday off before returning home to host Wilson Fike on Novemeber 29 at 6:30.

JV Trojans Earn Win

Garner's JV Boys team picked off Athens Drive 95-54 on Monday night at Athens Drive High School.

Coach Bloms and his squad took a 26-5 lead after the first quarter and coasted to the win.

Trojans pounce on Pride; Advance to Regional Finals

In a battle of two heavyweight programs on Friday night, Garner was the last man standing as they pulled out a 42-21 over visiting Leesville Road at Trojan Stadium.

Leesville (12-1) scored on the opening possession of the game on a third down and long when Braxton Berrios hit Darajai Robinson for a 73-yard touchdown pass and a early 7-0 lead.

After a three and out by the Trojans, Leesville looked to go up by a pair of scores, but that's when the defense came up big and forced the first Pride turnover of the night which led to the first score of the game for the Trojans as Demetrius Fairley scored from four yards out to knot the game at seven.

On their next possession, Garner (14-0) scored to take the lead as Vince Jefferies hit Juwan Moye in stride for a 34-yard connection and after a Tyler White extra point, it was 14-7 Trojans.

Late in the second quarter, that lead grew to 21-7 as the Trojans put together a 10 play scoring drive that covered 75 yards and ended with another connection from Jefferies to Moye and heading to the locker room it was a 14 point lead for Garner.

The Trojans got the ball to start the second half and wasted little time pouring it on as Moye score again, this time on the ground and from 34-yards out and a 28-7 lead.

However, the Pride wouldn't quit as they answered right back with a touchdown run from Berrios and it was 28-14 midway through the third quarter. Both teams then played field position for the next couple of drives and eventually ended the third quarter with Garner up 28-14.

Up by 14 points, Garner got the ball to start the fourth quarter and again put together a long scoring drive which covered 12 plays and was all on the ground and ended with a four yard run from Fairley.

Again, Leesville responded with a 33 yard scamper from Berrios to make it 35-21. On the ensuing kick-off, Garner got the ball at the Pride 49 yard line thanks to an onside kick which didn't travel the required 10 yards and Garner was able to take about four minutes off the clock before Fairley scored again to make it 42-21.

On the ensuing drive, Berrios was picked off by Raevon Smith to seal the 42-21 victory for the Trojans.

Garner will return to Trojan Stadium next week when they welcome Fayetteville Jack Britt to Trojan Stadium for the Eastern Regional Championship. Kick-off is slated for 7:30.

GMHS will proudly unveil the creation of artists Vincent and Victor Wood ('91) on Friday, Nov. 18th 4:30PM. The mural depicts the excellence in the Garner Trojans athletic tradition throughout the years

Artists Tim and Vincent Woods said "We're a few days into a sports mural at Garner Magnet High School, honoring the legends of past and present from our hometown. The preliminary sketch above is an idea of the final product as several changes have been made. The mural is being done on the 14'x24' billboard that is one of the most visible landmarks on campus - facing the main road (Spring Drive) sitting directly at the entrance to the sports facilities and parking lot."

They continued "We are going to do our best to have it completed before Fridays playoff football home game vs. Leesville Road. This is a special project to us for a high school that has educated members of our family since it was founded. The coaches, teachers, and learning atmosphere at Garner is unmatched and always will be. That is why the town will continue to produce some of the most talented people on the planet, and also why they also usually stay very close to home."

Tickets for the Garner/Leesville Road third round playoff game will go on sale Wednesday morning in the office at Garner High School.

The price of the tickets will be $8.00 and can also be purchased until the front office closes at 3:00 each day.

Trojans out last Laney; Advance to third round

In a game filled with offense, it was the Garner defense that came up with the key stops to lift the Trojans to a 55-35 win over Wilmington Laney in the second round of the 4-AA State Playoffs.

Garner (13-0) scored on the opening drive of the game on a touchdown run from Demetrius Fairley. But, that lead wouldn't last long as Laney (8-4) answered right back moving down the field through the air before Mike Sheehan rolled into the end zone to knot the score at seven all.

The Trojans responded with a 18-yard run again from Fairley, however, on the ensuing drive, the Bucs had an answer and scored on a Ryan Lilley two-yard run to make it 14-14 mid way through the opening quarter.

On their next drive, Garner responded as Vince Jefferies hit Anthony Tucker on a fade to the back of the end zone for a 20-14 lead for the home squad. Thanks to that missed extra point, the score for Laney on the next drive gave the Bucs a 21-20 lead.

After Garner scored on a Juwan Moye touchdown run and the Trojans added the two-point conversion it was 28-21, and that's where the defense stepped up.

Laney, on fourth down and four elected to go for it with the ball resting on the Trojan 44-yard line. The Bucs would go to the air but it was knocked away and with that defensive stop, the momentum swung back to the Trojans who were able to run to pay dirt on their next offensive drive to make it 35-21 and the men of Troy never looked back.

Garner would score once more before the break as Jefferies hit Moye from three-yards out and a 42-21 Trojan lead at the break.

The Trojans first score of the second half came early in the third quarter when Fairley found a hole and rumbled 52-yards for the score and a 49-21 lead.

Garner lit the lamp one final time as Gavin Wilson picked up his second interception of the year and took back to the Laney two yard line, one play later, Moye capped the scoring for the Trojans.

Laney added two late scores but couldn't come back as Garner advances to the third round of the state playoffs for the second straight year with a 55-35 win over the Bucs.

Garner will return to Trojan Stadium next week when they host Leesville Road, kick-off is slated for 7:30.

Garner shuts down Athens to advance

On a soggy night at Trojan Stadium, Garner used their ground attack to down Athens Drive 42-0 in the first round of the 4-AA state playoffs.

Athens Drive (5-7) took the opening kick-off down the field before attempting a 32-yard field goal, however, Tommy Evanoff's kick hit the upright and bounced off.

That was more than enough for Garner (12-0) who took the ensuing possession and marched down field thanks to a 59-yard Juwan Moye run down to the one yard line before Vince Jefferies punched it in for a seven point lead.

Early in the second quarter, the Trojans extended their lead as Jefferies hit Armani Lanier for a 27-yard touchdown strike and a 14-0 lead.

Midway through the third, it was the Garner rushing attack again as the Trojans marched down tho the one yard line before Moye scored to make it 21-0 Garner.

On the ensuing kick-off, Athens fumbled the ball away where Garner picked up the loose ball and on the ensuing drive, Anthony Tucker scored on a reverse and when the extra point snapped was bobble, Moye took off and ran it in for the two-point try and a 29-0 lead.

That lead grew to 36-0 at the break after a Demetrius Fairley 13-yard run and at intermission, it was all Trojans.

Garner put their final score on the board on the first drive of the third quarter. The scoring drive lasted 13 plays and covered 65 yards taking over six minutes off the clock and was capped with Fairley's second score of the night as the Trojans rolled to the second round with a 42-0 victory.

The Trojans will return home next week when they welcome Wilmington Laney to Trojan Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7:30.

East Garner wins Garner Bowl

For the sixth straight year, East Garner defeated North Garner in the annual Garner Bowl played at Trojan Stadium with a 22-6 victory.

After a scoreless first quarter, East got on the board first as Chris-Shaun Young scored from three yards out for the first score, East added a two-point conversion to make it 8-0 early in the second quarter.

East would add one more first half score as Braxton Brokenborough scored and after another two-point try it was 16-0 which would be the halftime score.

North Garner cut into the lead midway through the fourth stanza when Cody Carpenter hit Justin Gahrmann for a touchdown pass and a ten point 16-6 East Garner lead.

East added one final score to put the game away as Tyler Horton scored for the final 22-6 margin.

Soccer ends season with playoff loss

After fighting to get into the state playoffs, Garner hit the road on Tuesday night and traveled to Wilmington to battle Laney high school in the first round of the 4-A playoffs.

Unfortunately, for the Trojans the season came to an end with a 4-1 defeat by the Bucs.

Trojans capture top seed

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association released the State Playoff brackets today and Garner will be the overall number one seed in the 4-AA.

This means that the Trojans will home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Garner will open the playoffs on Friday night at Trojan Stadium against Athens Drive. Kick-off is set for 7:30 and booster club passes will not be accepted.

Second half surge sends Garner to victory

Facing their biggest deficit of the year, Garner found their stride scoring 37 points in the second half to finish undefeated with a 44-23 in over Harnett Central.

Garner (11-0, 7-0) scored on their first play from scrimmage as Juwan Moye rambled for 96-yards and the score to give the Trojans a 7-0 lead.

However that would be about the only highlight for Garner in the first half as Harnett Central (5-5, 2-5) scored 17 unanswered points on a touchdown run from Malcolm Graves and a Bale Ware pass to make it 14-7. Nate Laing added a 47-yard field goal and at the break, Central held a 17-7 lead.

A Garner fumble gave Central the ball early in third Ware rumbled up the middle 65-yards for the score and a 23-7 lead.

With thing looking bleak for Garner, Moye, put the Trojans on his back and carried them to victory rumbling for 316 yards on 22 carries helping Garner pull to within eight after a touchdown run and a two-point conversion with over nine minutes left in the third.

The Trojans pulled even with 5:30 to play in the third when Tyler Hinton scored from three yards out and another two point conversion tied the contest at 23.

With the game tied, it was all Garner as Moye and Hinton took over scoring a combined three touchdowns helping Garner roll to 44-23 win and cap an undefeated season for the first time since 2007.

Additionally, the 316 yards from Moye is the highest single game total since Sean Jackson in 1999.

Garner will be back in action next week when they are home for the first round of the state playoffs. Kick-off will be 7:30 and the opponent will be announced on Saturday.

The Garner Pop Warner Junior Pee Wee Cheerleaders will have a fundraiser on Saturday at Andy’s in Garner from 8:30 until 10:00 a.m. and will also have a Chick-fil-a night on November 2^nd from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m.

The purpose of these fundraisers is to raise money to support the cheerleaders trip to Disney World to compete for a championship.

Volleyball drops heartbreaker

Coach Boyette and his Lady Trojans dropped a heart breaker on Tuesday night in the second round of the State Playoffs with a 3-2 loss to Pinecrest at Trojan Coliseum.

Pinecrest (21-8) won the first game of the match 25-17 before Garner (20-4) evened the game with a 25-19 victory in the second game.

The Lady Trojans surged ahead in the third game with a 25-15 victory, however, Pinecrest forced a decisive fifth and final game with a 25-23 win.

In the final game of the match, Pinecrest eked out a 25-23 victory to advance to the third round of the state playoffs.

Lady Trojan Golf on to State Championship

Congratulations to Trojan golfers Nichole and Arianna Ceyrolles for qualifying for the State 4A Golf Championship at Pinehurst #6 next week.

Nichole was named All-Region after shooting an 87 while Arianna fired a 94. Additionally, the Trojans finished fifth at Monday's Regionals out of 16 teams, played at Duke University Golf Course.

Both Nichole and Arianna will participate in the State Championship next Monday and Tuesday.

JV Trojans win suspended game

Garner and Clayton made up their suspended JV Football game on Monday night at Trojan Stadium and the Trojans came away with a 41-28 victory.

The game resumed early in the second quarter with Clayton leading 12-6, but it didn't take long for Garner to respond as on fourth down and two, Brighton Hudson hit Wallace Montague for a 13-12 Trojan lead.

After the Comets answered right back to take a 20-13 lead, Garner scored again this time it was the familiar duo of Hudson to Julius Barnes to knot the score at 20 heading into the halftime break.

In the second half, it was Raekwon Britton who got the Trojans on the board first with a 17-yard run and after another touchdown pass from Hudson to Britton, it was 34-20 Garner after three quarters.

The final score of the night came when Tyreece Taylor rumbled 49-yards for the score and the 41-20 lead for Garner.

Clayton added a late score but it wouldn't make any difference as Garner came away with the 41-28 victory.

The JV Trojans conclude their season on Thursday night when they travel to Harnett Central for a 7:00 kick-off.

Volleyball advances

For the third consecutive year, Garner found themselves at home for the first round of the state playoffs, and for the second straight year they advanced to the second round as they defeated New Bern three games to one on Saturday afternoon at Trojan Coliseum.

Garner won the first two games before the Bears won game three and forced Garner to close the match in the fourth game with a 25-23 win.

The Lady Trojans will be home for the second round on Tuesday, the time and opponent is not yet known.

It was built as a game of big plays and on Friday night at John Baker Stadium, the contest was all that and more as Garner out punched Southeast Raleigh 41-34 to earn the Greater Neuse River Conference Championship.

Southeast Raleigh (7-2, 5-1) stuck on the first play from scrimmage as David Washington hit Quentin Atkinson for a 86 yard touchdown and the Bulldogs were off to the races up 7-0.

Garner (10-0, 6-0) answered right back on the ensuing kick-off as Anthony Tucker returned the kick back 90 yards to make it 7-6 after a missed extra point.

The Bulldogs answered right back with a five play scoring drive than ended on a flea flicker as Tristan Walker pitched to Washington who hit Atkinson again for the score and a 13-6 lead for the home team which is how the first quarter ended.

Early in the second, Garner pulled to within one as Demetrius Fairley rumbled into the end zone to make it 13-12 Southeast. The Bulldogs answered on the next drive with another big play as Washington hit Walker for the 20-12 lead.

Late in the first half, Garner found the answer. Backed up on their own 10 yard line, the Trojans went to the air as Vince Jefferies found Anthony Tucker for a 90-yard completion to pull Garner to within two. The Trojans elected to go for two and connected as Moye found Brayden Sims in the back of the end zone to send the game to a 20-20 tie at the break.

Garner came out swinging in the second half, on the first play from scrimmage, Moye rambled 53-yards to pay dirt and the first lead of the night for the Trojans at 26-20.

Yet again, the Bulldogs answered as Washington hit Ramel Tedder for a touchdown and the Bulldogs regained a one point lead. On the next drive, Garner salted the clock with an 12 play drive that took over five minutes off the clock and ended with another touchdown run from Fairley and after another two-point try, made it 34-27 Trojans.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Southeast answered with a pass to Tedder and knotted the game at 34.

Garner had one more score in them as the moved the ball down the field on the ensuing drive. After runs of 25 and 26 yards from Fairley and Moye, it was Fairley who capped the drive with a four yard run and a 41-34 lead for the Trojans.

On their final drive, Southeast Raleigh faced a fourth down and 32 and on the play, Gavin Wilson and Jeremine Bologiongo sacked Washington to end the game and preserve the 41-34 win for the Trojans.

Garner will conclude their regular season next week when the return to Trojan Stadium and welcome Harnett Central to town. Kick-off is slated for 7:30.

JV Trojans fall to Southeast Raleigh

The JV Trojans dropped their second consecutive game this season with a 32-13 defeat on Thursday night at Trojan Stadium.

The Trojans trailed Southeast Raleigh 20-13 at the break and couldn't find their offensive rhythm in the second half as the Bulldogs hit two big pass plays for scores which proved to be the difference in the game.

Coach Lee and his JV Trojans are back at home Monday night at 6:00 when they conclude their suspended game with the Clayton Comets.

After a sluggish start, Garner found their offensive stride on Friday night scoring 40 or more points for the sixth time this season as they spoiled the Knightdale homecoming with a 42-13 victory.

Knightdale (3-5, 2-3) struck first midway through the first quarter on a 65-yard drive which was aided by a pass interference call on the Trojans and an early 7-0 Knightdale lead, it was only the second time that the Trojans have trailed all season long.

It didn't take long for Garner (9-0, 5-0) to respond as they marched down the field and tied the game as Vince Jefferies hit Juwan Moye for a 55-yard touchdown pass and knot the score at seven.

After a three and out from the Knights, the Trojan offense went back to work and it was Moye again, this time on the ground as the senior waltzed into the end zone for a 14-7.

That lead grew to 21-7 early in the second quarter as Jefferies hooked up with Damian Ellis for another score.

Garner added two more first half scores, the first another Moye touchdown run. The final Trojan score of the half was another Jefferies touchdown (his third of the night) as he found Anthony Tucker in the back of the end zone and a 35-7 lead for the Trojans at the break.

In the second half, there was just one score for the Trojans and it was another run from Moye who scored his fourth all-purpose touchdown and a 42-7 Garner lead.

Knightdale added a late fourth quarter score for the final margin of 42-13.

Garner will be on the road next week as they travel to John Baker Stadium to battle rival Southeast Raleigh. Kick-off is slated for 7:30.

JV Trojans drop hear tbreaker

Coach Lee and the JV Trojans dropped a heart breaker 34-33 in overtime on Thursday night as the Knightdale Knights picked up a big GNRC victory.

Knightdale scored late and converted on a two-point try to force the overtime period before they eventually won the game.

Soccer picks up big win over SSS

Coach Sherwin and the varsity soccer team entered this week in a desperate fight for the state playoffs and their quest began on Wednesday night as they hammered Smithfield-Selma 5-1.

Tyler White scored two goals and added an assists for the Trojans while Taylor Stephens also scored twice for Garner who moves to 5-8-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the Greater Neuse River as they sit one game out of the final playoff spot for the conference.

The Trojans will be back in action tomorrow night at 6:30 when they travel to Holly Springs for a non-conference match.

Garner's defense pitched it's first shutout of the year as the offense scored at will on Friday night at Trojan Stadium as they blanked West Johnston 55-0.

Fittingly, it was the Trojan defense that put the first points on the board on West Johnston's second offensive drive. Facing a fourth and long, the Wildcats went back to punt, however the ball sailed over the head of Darius Williams and out of the end zone for a quick 2-0 lead.

Garner (8-0, 4-0) put their first offensive score on the board when they marched down the field on the Wildcat defense and Juwan Moye scored from six yards out to make it 9-0 Trojans.

After the first quarter, Garner had the ball on their own 28 yard line and hit a home run as Vince Jefferies hit Anthony Tucker for a 72-yard touchdown pass an a 15-0 lead. That margin grew to 22-0 when Moye scored for the second time in the game, this time from 11-yards out.

The Trojans took a 29-0 lead into the locker room as Demetrius Fairley found a seem and rumbled 67-yards for the final score of the half.

Leading by 29, Garner got the ball to begin the second half and wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard again as Moye scored on a 51-yard run on the second play from scrimmage and a quick 35-0 lead

West Johnston (4-3, 2-2) finally had a drive going but the eight play drive stalled after a face punt attempt failed and Garner took over. On the ensuing possession, Jefferies connected with Tucker for the second time, and a 10 yard pass for the 42-0 lead.

Garner put up two fourth quarter scores as Andre Gillispie scored from three yards out to cap a nine play drive to make it 48-0. The final score came off a Sam Stidwell two yard touchdown run to cap the night as Garner scored at least 50 points for the third straight week and earned a 55-0 win over West Johnston.

Cook named Wake County Principal of the Year

The Wake County Public School System named Drew Cook of Garner Magnet High School the 2011 Principal of the Year

Cook has been in education for 14 years and has been principal of Garner Magnet High for 2.5 years. Prior to that, he was an assistant principal and teacher at Garner High.

Cook is a devoted husband and father, spending much of his free time with his wife and their daughters who are 8 and 10. He enjoys playing church softball, golfing, hiking, and weekend trips to the beach.

Cook said continuous collection and analysis of data relevant to instructional programming is important.

“When possible, we work as a collective team to study and identify what we think to be effective practices, then implement these practices in pockets as pilots and watch as the practice spreads when the realization sets in that it is working. Once our best instructional practices have been identified, and school-level data can be used to support the continued use of these strategies, then we can clearly define our expectations for teaching and learning as a school.”

Garner High coach Eddie Gray has known Cook for some time.

“I have known him as a student athlete, fellow social studies teacher, my assistant basketball coach, my assistant principal and now my principal,” said Gray. “Over the years, I have watched him grow from a tall, gangly junior in high school that helped a young varsity basketball coach win a conference championship to an outstanding high school principal that has led our beloved school through some very difficult times.”

Student Rachel Gogal witnessed firsthand the transformation of her school under Cook’s leadership.

“When he was appointed principal, the excitement was evident in the halls and in the classrooms,” said Gogal. “His mission was to make sure we succeeded in all aspects of education, from the International Baccalaureate’s expectations in our classes to our artistic endeavors in theater and chorus to our continued success in athletics. The school is on its way to making his mission come true.”

JV Trojans slip past Wildcats

Garner did what they needed to do on Thursday night as they picked up another road victory as they downed West Johnston 19-6 at Wildcat Stadium.

The JV Trojans struck on their opening possession as Brighton Hudson found for a 41-yard pass completion and after the extra point by Kenneth Perkinson it was 7-0 Garner.

West Johnston could do little to slow Garner down on their next drive as once again, Hudson hit Barnes this time, it was just a 31-yard play and it was 13-0 Trojans and they would carry that lead into the locker room for halftime.

Garner (5-1, 3-0) scored just once in the second half and it came with just over four minutes left in the third quarter as Hudson scored on a quarterback keeper to make it 19-0.

West scored late in the game to make the final margin 19-6 as the JV Trojan pick up the road win.

Garner is back in action next Thursday when they welcome the Knightdale Knights to Trojan Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7:00.

Community of Hope Food Drive a huge success

On Tuesday, September 20th ,Community of Hope Ministries found itself calling local storage unit facilities looking for space to store several truckloads of groceries that were donated to the ministry by students at Garner Magnet High School participating in the Garner Magnet High School Homecoming Food Drive competition. In all, over 3900 total items were donated to the food pantry during Homecoming Week at Garner Magnet High School, September 19 – September 23rd.

Student Government advisor Jill Cottengim said, “It was neat to see the students take ownership of the drive this year. Last year was the first year we incorporated the food drive service component into our Homecoming Week activities. This year, the students took the idea and coordinated food drives in neighborhoods throughout the community to bring in additional food.”

Leaders from the Senior Class including Iva Earley, Zac Wilson, Gabi Dugal, Keith Boyette, Krista King, and Steven Jones contacted Community of Hope Ministries Development Director, Amy White, the week before Homecoming started to express the desire to run a food drive in Turner Farms subdivision.

White provided the bags and the flyers and the students walked door to door asking that neighbors participate in the drive. “The response was incredible”, said Earley, the student coordinator for the Senior Class drive. “It was easy and fun, and we know the food will go to those who need it most.” The Turner Farms drive returned an incredible 811 items placing the Seniors in first place to start the week of Homecoming Competition.

However, the Freshmen Class of 2015, goaded by the taunts from the high school’s upperclassmen that the Freshmen homecoming float was going to be too small and that the freshmen powder puff team would lose etc. secretly executed a three-subdivision homecoming food drive that brought in over 2000 food pantry items. Teams of students worked together to orchestrate drives in Turner Farms, Heather Downs and Hampton Ridge. Freshman Class advisor, Jon Sherwin, said he could not be more proud of the students in the Freshman class. “What they have done shows real class. Next week the floats will be forgotten and the no one will remember the score of the Powder Puff Game. To know that these kids worked together to collect food for those who are hungry in our community shows true heart!”

Freshman leaders involved in the food drive were: Lindsay Wright, Kyle Sammarco, Robbie McLamb, Duncan Forster, Bryson White, Logan Schild, Nicole Root, Nikki Wallace, Nick Phillips, Caroline Banker, Adam Gogal, Sarah Jankowski and Cassie Marshall.

White, said that the credit for the success of the food drive really goes to the school leadership. “I can’t say enough positive things about Principal Drew Cook and School Athletic Director, Doc Harrell. When we first approached the school about doing the drive, there was not a moment of hesitation. Both school leaders agreed that it was a win-win for both the school and the community.”

In addition to the weeklong competition, Harrell and the Trojan Athletics Booster Club offered $1 off of game admission to the Homecoming Game matchup between Garner and East Wake. Chick-fil-A marketing director, Kim Baber, joined the partnership by offering a FREE Chick-fil-A sandwich to anyone who donated at least three items on the night of the game. White added that the school’s Homecoming Week coordinator and Student Government advisor, Jill Cottengim, does an excellent job getting the students excited about participating in Homecoming week. “Jill added the food drive into her normal routine, just like she’d been doing it for years. I don’t think the Homecoming food drive would be a success without her support!” concluded White.

“It was an amazing week!” said White. To watch the pantry go from almost empty to abundantly overflowing is just a true blessing from God! We are so thankful that we will have the items we need to serve the at-risk and needy in our community.

After not competing for over a week, Coach Boyette and the Lady Trojans got back in the swing on things in a big way this week with three conference matches, two of which were on the road.

After a big win over West Johnston on Tuesday night, Garner hit the road again on Wednesday and picked up yet another win over East Wake to sweep the season series with the Warriors.

The win keeps Garner perfect inside league play as they move to 11-0 in the Greater Neuse River and 13-3 on the season.

Garner's final match of the week will be the only home match of the week when they welcome the Knightdale Knights to Trojan Coliseum tomorrow night. The match begins at 5:30 with the JV match preceding at 4:30.

Another win for golf

Coach Barnes and the Lady Trojan golf picked up another victory this week as the took down the Greater Neuse River Conference at River Ridge for their fourth tournament win of the year.

Garner was led by top scorers Lauren Ceyrolles, Nichole Ceyrolles, and Emily O'Neill. The defending GNRC champs complete their regular season at WilMar next week.

Soccer earns back to back victories

After a rough start to the season, the Trojan soccer team has earned back to back victories this week, both inside Greater Neuse River Conference play.

On Monday, the Trojans earned a big conference victory as they shut out Harnett Central 4-0 to snap a seven game winless streak.

Then, tonight Garner again picked up a huge victory as the Trojans took down their rivals from Johnston County, the Clayton Comets with a 3-1 win.

Garner will have one final match this week as they step outside of the conference and welcome the Fuquay-Varina Bengals to Trojan Stadium tomorrow night. The match will begin at 6:30.

Volleyball wins, again

After a break of over a week, Coach Boyette and the varsity volleyball squad returned to the hardwood on Wednesday night and picked up yet another Greater Neuse River Conference win as they defeated West Johnston in Benson.

For Garner,they improve to a perfect 10-0 in the conference and 12-3 overall. Additionally, the Lady Trojans pick up their 27th GNRC victory.

Garner is back in action tomorrow when they travel to East Wake for a 5:30 match.

Garner scored on every possession they had on Friday night at Charles Tucker Stadium as they hammered Smithfield-Selma 76-7.

Smithfield-Selma (0-7, 0-3) went three and out on their first drive and gave Garner great field position and on the second play of the drive, Demetrius Fairley scored his first touchdown of the night and the Trojans were off to the races.

On the next drive, Garner (7-0, 3-0) once again as Vince Jefferies connected with Juwan Moye for the only touchdown pass of the night and a quick 13-0 lead. After another SSS three and out, it was Moye again, this time on the ground as he put Garner up 20-0 with six minutes left in the first quarter.

The Trojans were able to get on the board one final time in the first quarter as Fairley scored his second and final touchdown of the night and a 27-0 lead for Garner after one. However, the scoring was far from over.

Garner's first play drive of the second quarter resulted in another touchdown pass from Jefferies to Moye and a 34-0 lead. The final appearance by the Garner first team came when Moye returned the ensuing punt 47-yards for pay dirt and a 41 point lead.

Andre Gillispie was the next Trojan to find the end zone as he scored his second rushing touchdown of the season to make it 48-0 with over five minutes left in the first half. Following another SSS three and out, Anthony Tucker fielded the Spartan punt and rumbled into the end zone from 60-yards out and a 55-0 lead.

Raveon Smith capped the first half scoring for Garner with a seven yard touchdown run and a 62-0 lead. SSS got on the board on the final play of the half as Dylan Homick connected with Donald Jones for an 89-yard touchdown pass and make it 62-7 Garner at the break.

The second half would be a contentious clock and the second team saw a lot of action for Garner as they scored a total of 14 second half points.

Garner's second half scores came off touchdown runs from Sam Stidwell and Montel Watters as the Trojans second 70 plus points against SSS for the second year in a row with a 76-7 victory.

The men of Troy return to Trojan Stadium next week when they welcome West Johnston to town, kick-off is scheduled for 7:30.

Garner scored 22 first quarter points on Thursday night en route to a 60-0 bombardment of Smithfield-Selma in JV football at Trojan Stadium.

Garner (4-1, 2-0) scored on their second drive of the game as Tyreece Taylor rumbled in from 12-yards out for his first score of the night and it was 7-0, Trojans.

After SSS fumbled away the ball on their next drive, Garner went to the air as Brighton Hudson connected with Julius Barnes for a 15-yard touchdown pass and a 14 point Trojan lead.

The final Garner score of the first quarter came when Snoop Dawson found a seem and raced 51 yards for the score and after a two point conversion, it was 22-0 Trojans after the opening stanza.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, the second quarter was more of the same as the men of Troy scored on their first drive of the second quarter when Taylor scored for the second time, on a 42 yard run and a 30-0 lead.

After a Garner safety made it 32-0, Garner scored again on a run from Gregory Stewart and the final score of the first half was a 16 yard run from Raekown Britton and at the break, the Trojan led 46-0.

In the second half, Garner scored just twice, thanks to a continuous clock. The first score of the second half was a defensive score when Britton picked off a pass and took it back 22-yards for a 53-0 lead.

Finally, Jaython Dunston rumbled six yards to pay dirt and the Trojans capped the game with a 60-0 lead.

Garner will be back in action next Thursday when the travel to West Johnston for a 7:00 kick-off.

Garner scored early and often on Monday night to win their 28th consecutive homecoming with a 61-6 win over East Wake at Trojan Stadium.

The Trojans (6-0, 2-0) scored on their first drive of the game as they faced a fourth and goal from the three yard-line and on the play, Vince Jefferies hit Armani Lanier for his 12th touchdown pass of the year and Garner was off to the races with a 7-0 lead.

After both teams played the field position game, Garner scored again as Jefferies capped the drive with a one yard touchdown run and a 14-0 lead, at the end of the first quarter.

On the first drive of the second quarter, the Trojans used a six play drive to march down the field on the East Wake (2-4, 0-2) defense before Tyler Hinton scored his first touchdown of the season and gave Garner a 20-0 lead.

The next drive for Garner last two plays before Juwan Moye took it 55-yards for the scored and a 27-0 lead. With one final drive in the first half, Demetrius Fairley rumbled 80-yards and capped the first half with Garner in front 34-0.

At halftime, Garner crowned their homecoming court: Prince: Miles Crawford, Princess: Simone Bullock, King: Jay Booth and Queen: Farrah Roberts.

As for the second half, it was more of the same for Garner. East Wake got the ball to start the second half and after a three and out, the Warriors, traveled a negative two yards, and Garner started from the three yard line which Moye cashed in for the score one play later and a 41-0 lead.

After another rushing score made it 47-0 Garner, Hinton scored again from 16-yards out and a 54-0 lead.

East Wake got on the board late in the third quarter when Chris Pernell hit Dominique Lane for the score and a 54-6 lead.

However, the Trojans added another score on a 14 play, 92-yard drive that ended with Hinton's third rushing touchdown of the night and a 61-6 final.

For Garner it's the second time they've scored 60 points this year with the other being the season opener at Enloe.

The Trojans are back in action on Friday night when they travel to Charles T. Tucker Stadium to battle the Smithfield-Selma Spartans, kick-off is slated for 7:30.

Garner Magnet High School will hold their 2nd Annual Homecoming Food Drive supporting Community of Hope Ministries during Homecoming Week September 9th - September 23^rd.

STUDENTS: Items will be counted and the points for each class will be awarded first, second, third and fourth place AND included as a part of the annual Homecoming Week spirit competition. The winner will be announced during the Homecoming Pep Rally on Friday, September 23rd.

All fans who donate at least three items will receive $1 off admission to the September 23rd Homecoming Game against East Wake AND a coupon for a free item at Chick-Fil-A. Suggested items are: peanut butter, pasta, rice, all-in-one meals like Hamburger Helper, canned fruit, canned vegetables, soup, cereal, pancake mix, syrup, grits, oatmeal, canned meat, spaghetti/pasta sauce and macaroni and cheese

JV Football to host Middle School Night

Coach Lee and the JV Trojans announced today that they will host the first ever Middle School Night at Trojan Stadium on Thursday night when Garner welcomes Smithfield-Selma to town for a 7:00 start.

Players from North and East Garner are invited to come see the game on September 29 and get in free if they wear their jerseys.
